I've suggested before that with the Swans and Wagga going to Canberra and the NSWAFL's full support of that, that it would have a negative effect on the Sydney AFL.

I now know of two great young up and coming footballers Angus Darling (UNSW-Easts) and Michael Ghobrial (Balmain) who've been poached by Canberra clubs, one SFL club is having trouble luring Riverina players to Sydney because they are too tempted by the Canberra competition and now we see the AFL clubs moving to strengthen affiliations in Canberra (why would they want agreements in the SFL now?).

All bad signs for Senior football in Sydney yet some still can't see it!

25 January 2003: Tuggeranong is to formally affiliate with AFL club Hawthorn.

Under the proposed affiliation agreement between the two clubs, Tuggeranong will play in the brown-and-gold Hawthorn colours and be known as the Tuggeranong Hawks. Tuggeranong competes in the eight-team AFL Canberra competition, which this year will include the Sydney Swans Reserves.

Other elements of the affiliation include:

Hawthorn players conducting junior clinics with the two junior Tuggeranong football clubs (the Tuggeranong Bulldogs and Tuggeranong Lions);
School clinics and guest appearances by Hawthorn players, coaches and identities; and
Visits to Melbourne by Tuggeranong players and coaches.
Tuggeranong covers Canberra's southern third, with a population of almost 90,000. AFL stars Aaron Hamill (St Kilda/Carlton) and Justin Blumfield (Richmond/Essendon) are products of Tuggeranong.

The affiliation was initiated by the Tuggeranong Football Club, and negotiated with Hawthorn President Ian Dicker and Hawthorn Regional Football Manager Geoff Ablett.

Hawthorn President Ian Dicker says: "As a good corporate and football citizen, the Hawthorn Football Club is keen to give back to the code, especially to juniors.

"We have been impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment of the senior and junior clubs in the Tuggeranong Valley, and see considerable potential for growth.

"At the same time this is a business decision, to spread the Hawks brand, generate increased memberships, and gain wider exposure for our sponsors."

The Tuggeranong affiliation will not involve regular season Hawthorn games being played in the ACT, but the Hawks will treat Tuggeranong as a 'development zone'.

Tuggeranong Football Club President David Jess says: "We are very happy to be involved with a successful and stable club like Hawthorn.

"This will be great for our club, and especially great for the juniors in the Tuggeranong Valley, who will get to meet and learn from Hawthorn players and coaches.

"Hawthorn will help promote us and we will promote them, their club, their players and their brand. We look forward to a long and successful partnership."

For the last 10 years the senior Tuggeranong club has been known as the 'Cowboys', named after former senior coach and AFL legend Kevin 'Cowboy' Neale, who led the club from 1993 to 1996. The club has played in a red, gold and blue 'Adelaide' strip.

How long before an AFL club relocates to the ACT?

It won't be in any of our lifetimes.
