The Katoomba-Lithgow Mountain Lions Australian Football Club traveled to the mystical east to take on Sydney Football Association side the Southern Sharks last Sunday and came away 54 point winners.

It was the first foray into Sydney Football for the Mountain Lions who are looking at fielding a Sydney Football Association second division side in 2004.

With a record of four wins, five losses and one no result the Mountain Lions now take a two week break before resuming against Mudgee at the end of the month.

The Club will continue its regular training and is looking for people to be involved with the clubs bid for admission into the Sydney or Central West football leagues.

Sunday saw the Lions come together despite unexpected last minute setbacks and an early injury to popular Irish backman Garry Flaherty. Gary returned to the club after an absence due to work commitments and immediately showed the silky skills that saw him rise to be a championship player of the Gaelic in his native Ireland. The club wishes Gary a speedy recovery.

The Blackheath duo of mercurial Davin Stritch and big Sean Muir dominated the centre of the ground. Coach Brent Kelly snared five majors while Sean and Dav contributed with three and one respectively. Leading goalkicker Matty Hill pulled up sore and managed one from the Wing.

The peroxide wearing Southern Sharks battled gamely but were no match for a controlled Mountain Lions effort. After the match the Sharks offered to support an admission from the Mountain Lions to Sydney football. The Mountain Lions are now hoping to meet with Central West administrators to examine the clubs options there as well.

The Mountain Lions are keen to get a junior structure in place for 2004 and would like to hear from parents and other responsible adults who would like to see a strong, fun and enjoyable Australian Football presence in the upper Blue Mountains and the Lithgow Valley.

The Mountain Lions would like to thank their supporters, the Lithgow Hotel and Norms Village Butchery where the Mountain Lions like to stock up on their ?fresh country killed meat?.

Not bad, ey?

The Sharks - they're a first grade side, or divvy 2?
