Hawks' injury list grows

Hawthorn?s extensive injury list grew longer in round 18, after All-Australian full-back Jonathan Hay damaged a hamstring against Port Adelaide, and Campbell Brown and Rick Ladson were injured in the VFL.

Hay was a major loss for the already-undermanned Hawks on Sunday, after fellow tall defender Mark Graham was a late withdrawal due to illness. Hay will miss at least three matches, and potentially played his last game for the year against the Power.

?It?s definitely three weeks. In that scenario you?d probably have him back for the last game of the year. Then you?ve got to weigh that up, depending how severe it is,? Hawthorn coach Peter Schwab said after Sunday?s match.

Brown?s injury came as a bitter blow, after he re-injured the shoulder that had kept him sidelined since round 11 in his first match back in the VFL. Brown will have scans and visit an orthopaedic surgeon this week, and is expected to have a general clean-up.

Ladson?s injury to the AC-joint of his shoulder is considered less serious. His arm was in a sling on Sunday, and will be scanned and diagnosed on Monday.

Hawthorn has been without tall forwards Nick Holland (hamstring) and John Barker (calf) for the last three weeks, and chief ruckman Peter Everitt (hamstring) has not played since round 12.

?It leaves us a little bit thin on the ground, with the rest of the year still in front of us,? Schwab said.

?We?ve had no luck in that area. To the credit of Joel (Smith), ?Hodgey? (Luke Hodge) and Kris Barlow at different stages, they all played very much under-sized down there and did a great job for us. So it was a good effort under a bit of pressure.?

Schwab said captain Shane Crawford was shaken by the heavy knock he received from Port?s Byron Pickett early in the second quarter. Crawford has been battling back soreness for the last fortnight and accumulated just 16 touches on Sunday.

?He took a pretty heavy knock there. It probably shook him a bit. He?s had a tough two or three weeks, and he?s been sore. He?ll be OK,? Schwab said.

A former director of umpiring, Schwab said it was difficult for the match officiators to adjudicate on bumps.

?It?s always hard to see ? where it comes from. So it?s a difficult one to police, I guess, in a way.?

J.Smith on O'Loughlin? The way mickey was limping, I don't think he'll be able to chase down anyone... then again, we could leave him all alone in the goal square and see if Smith backs himself!

Anyway doesn't Graham or Hay normally stand Mickey? Smith would hope to take the weakest attacker and run off him methinks..
