It has just occurred to me how many stories start with "he was just a skinny kid" and I am wondering if a fat kid with potential was ever recruited effectively. I don't think I am talking about Scotty Cummings et al. Not the guys that had trouble keeping weight off as they got older. I am discussing the stars that started out as "he was just a fat kid"....thoughts on this rather brilliant Sunday morning?

Cresswell apparently had a bigger arse than ScottH when he first got recruited

I think Jason Dunstall also. Would be the pick of the crop.

I think I read somewhere that Cousins was a fat kid.

Plugger, surely.

Dew was also always a bit rotund.

When I saw photos of Plugger at the start of his time with the Saints he looked lean and muscular, not what he bulked up to later of course, but not fat.

Dean Rioli anyone?

How about Derek Kickett?

Derek at the end yes, but I am asking about first impressions upon joining an AFL club. The fat boys who were given a go.:)

I somehow cannot think of Jason Dunstall being slender....nah just won't come.

Just remembered that bloke that came up from Essendon about 97/98 for a season or two; jumper never bent over his bum. Anyone?

Byron Pickett was always a bit barrel-ish.

Rutten has a good sized buttock - gives the sexiest man in footy (Lingy) a run for his money. Stuey Dew is well stacked in the buttock area as well.

Whilst not fat Swans are packing a fair amount of junk in the trunk with ROK, Schmidt and The Handy Dan.

I'm a bit partial to the bigger arse look. Just not on a bloke.

Brendan McCormick played at Fitzroy in the 90's was a larger than some (by a long way).

Stephen Jackson from West Coast and Richmond carried a bit too. If he reads RWO (which I'm sure he does) and he finds out who I am, he will have a laugh then give me a whack across the scone.

One from the past from North melbourne, the "Galloping Gasometer" Mick Nolan. He must have been a fat kid.

I don't know if he was fat in his playing days but there he is in 1977: 1 game, 0 goals, The Fat Controller no less! Source: In The Blood.

There was a different Andrew Demetriou that played for the Swans in the 70's. He could be the one you are refering to.

Our AD played a lot of reserves footy, but not much in the way of seniors. IIRC he played a bit of VFA footy afterwards.

Dont know if anyone here remembers him, but I recall a player we got in the early 90's from Claremont I think named Andrew McGovern. I always felt he was a bit plump.
