No changes for either side

Congrats to Crouch, Barry, MOL on fantastic careers.
Thanks MOL for the magic. Thanks Barry for that mark, and thanks Crouch for your great battles with Aker.

I cant beklieve that the selectors went with LRT as a ruck man , he will not be one as long as he has well you no what. As soon as he gets settled as a permanant defender they drop Pyke who I no doent know a lot about the game but neither does LRT as a ruckman. As for the HFF whats McGrath and co doing running around by themselves. I feel as though Roosey perhaps should quit now as his match ups are gone backwards. Very disappointing not just getting beat but the way they are playing second to the ball again.

Young Blood
29th August 2009, 09:31 PM
Just not getting our hands on the ball enough. Midfield getting spanked. Disappointing lack of intensity. The retiring three deserve better.

Poor LRT getting monstered in the ruck - Pyke definitely more competitive at hitouts.

Foreign Legion
29th August 2009, 09:33 PM
Hardly sighted McVeigh or J. Bolton - hope they aren't tagging if Jack and Kirk already are. White needs to think a second when he gets the ball and also stop leading so wide!

Goodes doing well as usual but we are getting murdered at the Centre bounces - first one was the only win I can recall.

Barry doing well in his last - Magic and Crouchy trying hard. IMHO Goodes is our only hope to win this.

Absolutely spot on. That free for in the back when we should have been taking a shot at goal for holding the ball....I'm speechless. The fact that we played on for 10 seconds, had about 3 possessions, and kicked a goal, without being penalised 50 metres, was for me a clear indication that the umpire knew he had got it wrong. Would have put us in front with all the momentum.

Fair dinkum we threw that away. The incredible indirect football in the last quarter with the wind was breathtaking. We just criss crossed the ground adnausium. We did a couple of really good switches but the rest of it was plain tripe. After a terrific comeback we manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory from a top side for about the 5th time this year.

Grand Final hero or not with 1.23 on the clock, the last roll of the dice, and that lain brain Barry does his signature run onto his right foot and turns it over. He was well clear on his left and should have put it to the top of the square. He even looked to wrong foot his opponent only to then wrong foot himself. Early in the last Q he went backwards when a long kick was the order of the day. You could just see he had no intention of doing anything positive.

For one last time this season, how bad was our centre clearance work. Whenever we challenged they just took it away with hardly a contest, to goal. In many cases we were not within 5 metres of a Brisbane player on a centre clearance. I thought last week was bad but this was just horrible. Our backline does a great job given the incredible speed the ball comes at them from the centre. How many times did their clearances hit one of their players on the chest, not giving our backs any chance. Our clearance work around the ground was just pathetic also.

So when they look at their list at seasons end the first one to go should be clearance coach Mark Stone. Give him the lemonade right now.

Looking at that game I think next season can be a good one. Our defence is sound with Grundy stamping himself as a very good player and LRT for mine having his best season.

They kept saying it on TV tonight that we don't anywhere near enough run in the midfield. Our midfielders don't run the lines and Jack is always used as a run with player. We must get speed in there and stop stuffing around when going down the corridor.

31 hard at it
29th August 2009, 11:23 PM
One BAD quarter costs a lot with the speed of the game today.
TOO many mistakes in the second. Cheap fees given... lack of concentration by a couple of players.
We will miss Magic for his magic, Crouchy for his toughness and Leo .... another night of incredible footwork.. heart in mouth runs and a couple of great marks.

They will enjoy the premiership reunions forever !:D

I thought LRT and Grundy were very good in defence tonight.

I think we have a pretty good backline. It is the poor midfield pressure that puts them under so much pressure. Also I did notice that when LRT went on to the ball we did get our hands on the footy in the midfield. When he went off the ball we were 8 points down, Brisbane immediately gets an easy centre clearance for a 2 touch goal.

It is pretty clear where we need to improve.

Spot on Nico about the centre clearances. We have been slaughtered here in recent weeks and tonight was no different. It's actually amazing we got so close given the amount of ball they had. To me McVeigh and Jolly aren't at 100% and consequently some of their second efforts were non-exstant

nervous about Reg early playing as the spare man he was constantly wavng at the bench with a quizzical look. However he did grow into the role and was one of our better players

At the risk of getting lambasted I think that as good as Jolly has been for us many of taps are ineffective. he really doesn't have a leap and most of his taps go to his feet. The opposition reads him way better that we do. LRT had the leap and got it clear and our blokes seemed to read him. Yet most people see it as a waste of time playing LRT on the ball. I reckon as an around the ground ruckman he could be anything.

Yes. Kirk has gone back to being primarily tagger and is having less effect on the offensive. J Bolton was having less and less effect as the season progressed. McVeigh was fairly quiet, but it was his first game back. The rest of the midfield is quite young still and not that fast. I think we should try Mattner up in the midfield to give it some size.

@@@@ing HELL! OK, we were @@@@ in the second quarter, but that number 22 for the Lions, I think his name was Wenn, he was wearing an odd-coloured uniform, maybe some bleach in the wash? Anyway, his top was bright yellow, and his shorts were black. He really got them over the line.

In all seriousness, he was @@@@ing disgraceful. 29, whoever he was, was quite decent. Didn't really notice him, which is what you want from an umpire. Kennedy was poor, but it went both ways with him. But honestly, number 22, he was absolutely disgraceful. I'm not one to complain about the umpires, I'm usually pretty level headed, and I reckon they are unfairly maligned because most of the problems stem from the rules, not those enforcing them, but tonight, he was something else. I have never, EVER heard an individual umpire get such a loud booing from a crowd. Some of his calls were just beyond comprehension, and they almost inevitably went against us.

Anyway, unfortunate way to send three Swans champs off, but at least we showed ticker. As has happened a number of times this year, we got close, but just couldn't quite get there. The send-off for Magic, Leo and Crouchy was fantastic. Brought a tear to my dad's eye, and he's a Bombers supporter.

Crouch, Leo and Mick were chaired off the ground by players- had a hug with each other and there was a lovely shot on the screen of the three of them going down the race together.

Well done to the Lions as well for staying on the ground well beyond the finish to form a guard of honour in front of the Bradman Stand.

I agree with everyone about the umps, Fox and the midfield. They all need fixing.
Otherwise, and apart from a couple of very costly brain spasms (Mattner who should know better, Jack who will have learned something), and the inefficiency in the midfield, there were some very encouraging passages of play. Top games from the black pearls, solid work from ROK, LRT, Shaw and Reg, more encouraging signs from the youngsters Smith, Hannebery, MOD, Thornton.
On fifth quarter Blight thinks we can't rebuild quickly. I think he can't see what's under his nose.

Some good fight shown but in the end a disappointing end to the season. I admire Kirky but his job on Simon Black today was poor. Our entire midfield was well beaten which in the end was the difference - aside from some of the worst umpiring I have seen.

With every ending there is a new beginning, and as we lose 3 great servants we'll unearth some new talent next season.

Three players not playing tonight who will command positions next year are Paddy Veszpremi, Brett Meredith and Lewis Johnston. And with some good draft picks in November we won't be down for long.

What a game Dan Rich tonight so we'll do well to land someone like him with our first rounder!

Will have to wait and see how ready Johnston is. But add Bird into the mix, and cross our fingers that Malceski can refind his mojo, and there is some decent talent waiting in the wings.

And potentially most important of all - if his body stays fit - is Daniel Currie. For those of you who haven't seen anything of him, not only does he look like a promising tap ruckman, he has hands like vices. Could be an important missing piece of the jigsaw.

Fab night at the footy, good showcase for the game. Special farewell occasion for the three retirees. Awful display of umping, how could a new convert understand the interpretation of the rules tonite. Lotta love towards the boys from the faithful, Mick was a mess when he passed us. His Mum must have been so proud of the boy.
Excellent fightback as usual when they looked like getting rolled by 7 goals.
Thanks for the pleasure of watching you play Mick, and also jarred and leo. You have all made us marvel at your endeavors.

Jolly can hardly be blamed for that.

He gets his hands to the ball first, and presumably puts the ball where it's supposed to go...isn't he leading the league in effective taps?

I think the clearance problem lies elsewhere...will be interesting to see the starting team for next year if all are fit.

Top class Brisvegas. I loved that. That was a huge effort from our supposed "rivals". (Where the AFL get that from I'll never know!!) That is sportsman like. Good for the kiddies to witness.

What a great night.

Wasn't it fantastic to see the premiership flag come out of the "good" linen cupboard and get a whipping in that wind?? We got some great photos of it.

Farewell to three legends of our time.

MickyO - four goals. Can someone tell me why he's retiring? Who says he's an old man.

Crouchy - bled tonight because he missed out on wearing head gear in the 2005 granny.

Leaping Leo - one more mark tonight ala THAT mark - ran in from 20m and grabbed a beauty. One last time!!

I cried when Micky started crying. He and Leo can be our runners next year, and Crouchy can be the gatorade boy.

Jolly will get the ruck in the AA team.

If we had a few ROVERS, roving instead of running around bumping into each other, our clearances would be a hell of a lot cleaner.

I don't know why he does it, but Goodesy runs straight through the pack as if he's going to "chuck a Kels" if he's anywhere near the bounce. I've said it before many a time, like Kels, it would be great if he were able to take the ball with him, but all it really does is have three of the opposition follow him and we get another stoppage.

Our "stoppage" game would work a lot better if Kels came in and spent a few sessions with the youngins teaching them to rove the ball.

What can i say? I'm just shattered we couldn't get over the line with all the momentum in the last quarter. Story of the Swans this year i guess. Can peg it back but just don't have the class to finish off the games. 2002esk. Great effort to come back from 39 points or whatever it was.

The Umps should be hanging their heads in shame, and the Noble and Members stands made sure they understood that at half time and at full time the police moved in more closely around them, and well they might. I would be surprised to see any of them come GF day.

The game had its moments, and we all got to make a lot of noise with those clappers that gave me a major dose of tinnetus and that young female who sat two rows behind and has a schreek that would cause a banshee to pause in flight didn't help.

But the send off was particularly fine. The three of them spaced themselves out and walked the perimiter on their own, each in their own style and tempo, with the rest of them in a nest walking behind them further infield. Crouchy slapped hands with as many as he could, MickyO looked into each and everyone of our eyes and was drawing as much as he could from us. Leo collected his two boys somewhere (I think at the Noble Stand) and continued the long walk. The Lions staff and hangers cleared the Stadium and the boys set up a guard of honour in front of their own cheer squad who joined in the party.

It was a slow walk a la Kell and Dunks. And when it got down to the race, Micky realised there was another 20 meters or so of ground he hadn't covered when they started so he held up proceedings so he could go down there as well. Crouchy had started further back so someone down there with a big red banner was rewarded. They all clapped us or waved or wiped eyes.

At the race every other player and official milled in those bright red jackets and eventually clustered around while the boys were chaired off and provided a brilliantly coloured tail to the procession.

All in all it was a class act from each and everyone of them. And it was a class act from Us Who Were There.

Me again. One more think, I was keeping an eye on Jolls as the rather enigmatic and wonderful LRT was rucking for much more than he would in rest periods, and in his rest times he looked absolutely done. Nothing left. Nada. Zip. I suspect he is carrying injury to ribs.

As for McVeigh, he had no legs. He is carrying back related hamstring, and when he would have normally run in and kicked long, he passed short and fluffy. He did his best in marshalling, but no legs.

And as for putting Craig on Jon - it was like David and Goliath. And Craig is not all that small! Hope we have a KPP for the backline. One day. Soon?

Actually a lot of the blokes looked done for the season. Run out of legs. Oh well, bring on the party, and the draft, and the preseason and Round 1 2010!

You make a good point about Craig B. We have overloaded him for too long.He has done the job magnificently but the wear and tear is starting to show. His kick into the man when we had momentum up led to a turnover goal, his hands in the back to Jon lead to another and these little things indicate that the guy has worn too much pressure. We need a KPP in defense and he needs to go to the flank. i am not criticising him,he is a great player,I am sympathising with him!

Been a long season and glad its over now.
I said at the start of 09 we would finish 13th .
We just couldnt win games when we normally would of:

Eg : StKilda (Twice), Geelong, Brisbane (Last night), Hawthorn(MCG).

Didnt get near Collingwood ,W Bulldogs or Adelaide again.
Couldnt be Freo in Perth .

Last night pretty much said where we are at.
We are competative when are are in form against the best and when we are not switched on we are very ordinary .

We beat 1 Top 8 team for the year in Carlton.

Didnt win Interstate.

Won once in Melbourne against RICHMOND (15th)

Won in Canberra against MELBOURNE ( 16TH )

Agree with Nico, we really must get some pace and genuine inside players in the middle to get back in the mix with the Top 8.
Kirky @ Jude will be in our best 22 , though they need young quick players around them who can win the footy and break the lines.
They are toilers who are stars in their own right and still have plenty to offer.
Whilst many on here think Craig Bird can be the answer ,he also will be in our best 22 though is a plodder who doesnt win games or breaks games open.

We got smashed by quality midfielders last night again.

Gotta give Heath Grundy my hand though ,never rated him at all.
I ll eat humble pie now, and congratulate him on his season.
We can bulid a defence around B2 ,Reg and LRT now.
He has had a sensational season and has been a shining light.
Always admired LRT and have said a million times on here that hes nearly 1st picked week in week out. He gets everything out of himself.

Look we tried, got back in the game fell short.
Just a shame we couldnt send Micky ,Leo and Crouchy out on a winning note.
Hopefully we have a Brownlow hanging around Goodsey neck again.
Most importantly we have found some kids this year as well :

Brett Meridith,Nick Smith,Dan Hannebery,Matt Odwyer,and Jesse White.

The possibilty of getting Tadhg Kennelly back is a positive.
The fact we can get something for Hally.
The fact we can start 2010 with a full list
Losing Fosdike,Kennelly before a ball is bounced
Not 1 game from : Henry Playfair,Tim Schmidt @ just 2 from Leo Barry

Injuries killed Lewis Johnston ,Paddy Veszpremi , Dan Currie and Matty Laidlaw. They are all young and they all can play at the elite level.

Questions marks are hanging though on many:

Senior guys who had poor seasons need to bounce back are ;

Marty Mattner,Ed Barlow,Ted Richards,Paul Bevan & Jarred Moore

Guys under the microscope are :

Daniel Okeefe,Nick Malceski,Luke Ablett,Henry Playfair,Amon Buchanan,Ryan Brabazon & Tim Schmidt.

Pretty sure they're all too old for the rookie list. Schmidt and Braba certainly are. Laidlaw might just creep in.

But there's really not much point in putting any of those on the rookie list anyway. If the club doesn't think they'll be right in the mix for a senior spot next season, why hang on to them? It only really makes sense to put an existing senior player on the rookie list if they are recovering from a long term injury and you want to give them a bit of time to recover (ala Thornton this year).

No way we are going to take 9 or 10 in a shallow draft.

Was at the game so couldn't work out many decisions - most a long way away.
Big screen replays were selective but often showed poor decisions, to Swans detriment most of the time.

How did umpiring appear on TV? Often shows things you miss at the game.

What was the Jude free against for at the pivitol moment, late Q4?
Could have been over-come if it weren't for an ensuing brain fade or two....

BTW, what % of BL's goals were from frees? I guess 30% Ours?

Agree with your sentiments. I watched the Hawthorn/Bombers game and the Hawks got screwed by the Umpires too.Jeff Kennet was ropable and rightly so.The free kicks were so biased and one sided they definately affected the result. I mention this not to defend the Umpiring just to counter the idea that we are the only side that has to play a team with 19 men on the field. Really though, the umpiring standard is killing our game. The thing that really gets me is how well the Grandfinal is umpired because the umpires throw away the book and just let the boys play. Self umpiring might be a better option.Players know in 90% of times if they have infringed. It sounds impossible but could it get any worse than it is now? Maybe an umpire there for the disputed frees.

Don't we also have two going onto the veterans list this year which allows us extra rookie spots that can be nominated to play. May mean Pyke and one other can still be a rookie and be elevated at any time to play.

Don't we also have two going onto the veterans list this year which allows us extra rookie spots that can be nominated to play. May mean Pyke and one other can still be a rookie and be elevated at any time to play.

Just can't see them cutting further than 1 or 2 at most and this likely to be Playfair and Braba.

:D

But two of Kirk, Goodes and Jude can be put onto the veterans list as well, so it's really not that significant. I mean, Roos may opt to keep them off, but that wouldn't make much sense to me, as we'd be trading two list places and extra salary cap room (only half of the vet listed players' salary is counted in the salary cap) for two rookie places.

From the article around Goodes' 250th match it definitely looks like he'll be one of two upped to the veterans list (which makes sense since he'd be on the highest salary).

Thanks for posting those excellent images Primmy, it was an unforgettable night. That just sums it all up.
The game cannot always be won........ only played and enjoyed.
In some of the images Leo looks more devastated than the other two to have played his last.
There is a remarkable bond in this group. They made us feel part of it Sat night, big time.
Thanks to all the Swans and the support staff.
Have a well earned holiday.

Not sure that salary cap constraints are going to be an issue for 2010. Not unless there is some "big name" available to lure (who can be obtained via the PSD).

But two senior list spots would be more valuable than two rookie list spots, so its likely we'll see them put there anyway, you'd think.
