I'm just about to head into the game. Got a good feeling about today, we usually play the crows here at night, the last day game we played them was that game in 2001 where we won by 49 points. The other day game here that I've been to is the Port 2003 Qualifying final so let's hope we have a similar result to these!

I just had a sneaky repeat of the 2003 Port game last night (tv was terrible, no games shown fta). It puts me in a happy place. Although I noted only five players from our side are still at the Swans, Kirky, Goodsey, Jude, Tadgh, LRT (sorry if I have missed anyone). Schneider, BBB, and Scotty Stevens being with other clubs now. The rest are all retired, and a few of them are coaching. And therein is the history of the game. If you ever are going to tell a kid, make the most of it, show them this game.

Weather fine and hot in Adelaide and 29 degrees.

LRT seems to be regressing with ball in hand.... Last year there was nothing surer (if not quite visually convincing) than LRT with ball in hand, but this year, while a good negator, he has been making the elementary errors he was making 3 years ago. Hopefully he's just rusty after a long preseason, and will get back into it in time.

Yep... going the way of Schneider..... Peaks and then just slides away....

Still, he's more than doing his job negating his opponent, so he's still well and truly in the best 22, but it's just annoying. He really injected himself into our backline movements last year with great effect. Now he's doing it, but not pulling it off. He either needs to take a step back and let others do the work, or work on his composure. Hopefully it's the latter, because the more players contributing to our run out of defence, the better.

Xie Shan
4th April 2010, 02:45 PM
Skills of both teams pretty ordinary in that quarter (LRT - heart attack mode!), but we look good when we use the corridor. Crows not playing well atm, but we need to capitalise.

liz
4th April 2010, 02:45 PM
Not too bad a start, though defence looks a little shaky. LRT very lucky not to have a free against him when he pulled Tippett down in the ruck, then we go down the other end and get the ball into the hands of ROK.

Still early days with Jetta but very impressed with his decision making and his ability for his skills to match that. (And that HTB against him should really have been an ITB free for him - far softer are regularly paid).

Overly harsh but that last goal to the Crows was irritating. Not just Jesse's drop, but we had numerous possessions after that but kept running round in backward circles.

Still, if we don't beat the suckers from here, we never will. ROK is having a great game, Mal pretty good too. But it is the newbies who are really contributing on the scoreboard. Seven out of 11 goals from newcomers.

Great half swans. Reward for effort.

Sure, a weakness in his game but the goal was really due to Mattner twice running back into play with less than a minute on the clock. First time he was clear and only had to roost it to ice the quarter. The second time he still had time to kick forward. Shades of Leo Barry rubbish under pressure.

I come from Port Adelaide stock and I loathe the Crows more than any other team... it's always been painful that they are our bogey team. So god damn does it feel good to see us belt them for once.

Now we need to beat Collingwood this year and then I can say we lost to Adelaide & Collingwood because of Hall & Jolly. Glad Jolly decided to leave as it meant we got Mummford who is younger and appears to be more versatile, Seaby an added bonus along with Bradshaw.

From the backilne:

LRT - risky early but got his head together.
Grundy - Very good footballer. Has hardness inspades.
Shaw - Not his best but who cares. Not a passenger because we had none.
Malceski - well and truly back and I am back on.
Bolton - some sensational body work he doesn't have to take the top forward.
Mattner - couple of clangers but did his bit
McVeigh solid, Jacks best game for mine, McGlynn is a very smart footballer and a great reader of the play, Jude must love it with our midfield now because I suspect he will ot get a tag now, Kirk cruised around and did his job.
Jette - excuse me! How good is this lad at getting on his own. As soon as he starts to take those ones at his feet every time look out. Loves the big grounds.
White - redeemed himself in the second half. Looks better playing up the ground.
Moore - Just when you say "where's Moore", he bobs up with a couple of quality possessions. Does his bit each week.
Seaby - we can say McGlynn and ROK were stars as was Goodes but this bloke was simply outstanding and Mumford was OK too. They must have won almost every centre tap and our clearance work was a bit better there but needs improvement still.
Kennelly good, Bradshaw very good with 2 goals and at least 2 goal assists.
Hanners gives us that brilliant midfielder we were looking for. What a star.
ROK was simply sublime. Has a massive motor and was entitled to struggle late but just kept on going.
Goodesy's touch was something to behold.

I think we are entitled to say we are going places this year.

We were helped today by the Crows' backline disorganisation and their amazingly poor goalkicking. They missed 5 sitters at least. Roos won the coaching honours - he kept Vince and Mackay out of the game, plus Craig couldn't respond to our ability to switch and use the corridor.

LRT made some shockers in the first quarter but was good for the rest of the game. He'll keep his place ahead of Ted because he can run and carry and Teddy's disposal is erratic.

Grundy was our most impressive defender - extremely well-composed and picked up a stack of possessions. Agree with the earlier comments about Hanna - what a tough, classy player (I didn't have a problem with the TV commentators today except that they didn't call him out.) ROK and McGlynn were sensational. Moore played exactly the game we need from him, as did Malceski.

A question mark over White, who didn't do much and made several clangers. We'll see how he goes next week. Bradshaw didn't do a lot either and got outbodied a few times, but he ran and chased, and kicked goals early when we needed them.

The Swans had an edge in most of the key stats - tackles 65 -52, clearances 36-32 , contested possessions118-101 and inside-50s 52-44 - but not as much as the scoreboard would suggest.

We actually lost the hitouts 33-40 though Seaby and Mumford played their roles to perfection. I love this combo already - it would be hard to find two such contrasting players playing the same position.

A huge win in the context of the season and the Swans' team rebuilding. Shows we are right on track and capable of mixing it with any team in the comp.

I'm sure he'll play but it may depend on whether he played to his instructions. Impossible for us to know. Roos will also be aware that White's season turned around last year after kicking a bag in the reserves.

The jury is still out on whether a forward line with 3 talls will work. Bradshaw in my view is a very different player to what MOL was last year.

Bit hard on Bradshaw. 2 goals and 2 goal assists will do me every week. He picked up the ball twice on the half volley on hard leads, hands off to a player running towards him for 2 goals. He knew what he was going to do before he took possessions. Quality player who will only get better.

I thought White worked into the game and after a couple of poor disposals early on and worked well up the ground in the second half. Another tall option around half forward works well. He will get better.

One thing I noticed was the rotations of the small and medium players through the forward line. We had Moore, McGlynn, Kennedy, Bolton, Jack, McVeigh, ROK and even Shaw rotating and I don't think the Adelaide players knew who to pick up.

I had to be out and about this afternoon, visiting, and could only listen to the ABC commentary as I was in and out of the car. What i heard topped off a great day. At some stage the commentators were giving McGlynn best on ground but ended up with ROK 3 votes, McGlynn, 2 and Seaby 1. Strangely they didn't seem to mention Hanners much. Great win. How much can Dan Hannabery improve? Geesh, he's 19 this year and he's already my favourite young Swan. He really wove his way through heavy traffic brilliantly, always composed and executes all manner of skills at nearly 100% efficiency.

I know Dan is being protected from total opposition bombardment in his early years. He will need to really let go and his dicipline will need to be tested under team rules, but if he's not skipper by the time he's 26, I will be shocked.

Yeah that came out harsher on Bradshaw than intended. I just meant he didn't get his hands on the ball alot but what he did on and off the ball was really useful. Likethe whole 22 today he played his role.

Amazing how sharp and elusive the forward line looks now it's been liberated from Hall.

Great performance today, really enjoyed it. Still some sloppy disposal work, but it is the swans after all. Very happy with what I have seen in the first two weeks, and if we can do the business over the next three rounds (I hope we can) than we could have had quite a good start to the season. Love the way the recycled players have fitted in, and how the young guns are beginning to take their roles in the team. The others that I really like are the middle tier players that are kicking on... i.e Kieran Jack who really is becoming a super solid reliable player.

Great to see Malceski back to some sort of resemblance of his best!

An excellent performance and one that does put last week into perspective considering the margin St Kilda won by last night. McGlynn an obvious BOG but Hanners, Jude, Kirk, Grundy, Mal and, well I could probably name most of them, were great. A big nod to the coaching staff too because they won their battle against Neil Craig and his staff.

Theory - we will (and are already) get a better run fromt he umps this year without Hall in our squad. I know we were robbed last wek by some crucial ones but we won the count overall and I think we'd have won it today too. Just throwin' it out there

Good to get a win, very promising signs from a lot of players. Looked like close to a full house at Footy Park, which should have been worth a few goals for the Crows, whose style of play I've always liked.

It will be a long year if every game the Swans win we have to read and hear about the "recycled stars" we have in the team. The Hawthorn flag probably gave legitimacy to the tanking / bottoming out theory, but it could also be a one-off. I have no idea why more clubs haven't taken the Swans' approach. Our drafting this year showed you can retain high picks AND recruit experienced players.

In contrast there is a bunch of kids running around for Richmond who will be lucky to win a game this year and the media already suggesting they stop playing the few experienced players they have and with it probably any hope of them being competitive. The journos who will rightly praise the Swans for giving chances to McGlynn, Kennedy, Seaby, Mumford etc should also start questioning why they aren't playing at a club like Richmond.

Great game - despite the skill errors, now forgiven. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Hannebery and the new guys. One of the headaches for future opposing teams will be who to tag, who to put on whom. I think that most teams will run out of quality players before we do - if they put their best onto our youngest and newest, it will free up Kirk and Jude to shine again...we will be like slippery eels. A coach's nightmare and Roos' delight.

Couldn't agree more hammo.

I just do not understand why a club such as Richmond (or even Melbourne and North Melbourne) have not been more open to using later picks to egineer deals to get experienced players to the club to help out the youngsters and to remain competitive. It is one of the reasons why I think someone like Richmond loses so many promising kids and never gets the best out of them as they are constantly being pounded into submission in games and the kids get dis-heartened.

One reason is probably that players from other clubs do not want to go there and it shows what we have been able to build as a club that players want to move to Sydney for better opportunities and feel like they will be given every chance to succeed at the club.

DST

Couple of reasons, I suspect.

Firstly, the AFL system is set up to reward being abysmal if you can't be competitive. The ridiculous PP system means you are far better off winning fewer than 5 games than trying to actually be the best a club can be.

Secondly, the media frenzy on superkids makes it easy for struggling clubs to sell the rebuild story to their supporters. No-one in the media wants to point out that Richmond and Freo have essentially been rebuilding for the last decade.

That said, both the examples about (Richmond and Freo) have recruited some experienced players in recent years (like McMahon, Cousins, Solomon, Tarrant, Bradley) but they haven't had the impact that other players have had at the Swans, Saints etc. When Roos recruits a recycled player, it seems he has a specific role in mind for them and integrates them into the team to support this, rather than just going after experienced players to bolster the overall squad. This is probably easier to achieve when you already have a relatively strong, balanced team than when you find yourself in the position that Richmond and the Dees are currently in. If you look at the examples of Richmond and Freo players I gave above, a few of them are quality players and have performed well for their new sides but still haven't made a huge difference to the performance of their new teams.

I strongly think the AFL needs to truly incentivise clubs to be the best they possibly can be each and every year. This probably means complete abolition of PPs (I would go further and decouple draft completely from ladder finish) and making it easier to recruit experienced players. Maybe short term salary cap extensions can be given to clubs that really do need a boost, while free agency will help the movement of players in future years (though I think this could be done by a smarter trade system than by free agency, per se).

Had to wait until I got home from work to watch the tape, but it was worth the wait. Great Win. 1st quarter was atrocious from both sides. Swans really sealed the deal in the 2nd and just kept them at bay after half time rather than put them to the sword. I was on tenterhooks right through the 2nd half waiting for the Crows to come back but they just couldn't find enough to do it. McGlynn was brilliant. Seaby & Mumford look to be a strong ruck combo(who needs Jolly). Jetta looks like he could be a superstar of the future. Hanneberry looked good in his first game for the year. All in all a great team performance. (clap)

How good was Jude's effort with 2min left! That surely is another gret sign of things to come.

I have watched a bit of the replay and I would like to note a great big Whoo Hoo to Hanners. His hands were fantastic. The absolute concentration on the contest, speed of extrication of the ball and delivery to effect is incredible for a kid of his experience, but even more so was his judgement. He would wait for the opp player to take a bouncing ball and then pounce a tackle causing either a ball up or turnover.

I don't want to pump up his tires too much, but I also loved the fact that he looked so disappointed his kicking for goal was off. Watch out for next week. I predict a great deal of goal kicking practice to take place.

Just on the rebuilding thing. I think the other big plus for us is that we have recruited to beat the 2 compromised drafts coming up. The talk on the radio about this is almost paranoia as to how clubs are going to suffer and cope. We have depth and experience on our side plus a good group of young players coming through. I would expect we will delist our compulsory 3 this year and that's about all. May not even go for the trades but that would be against our grain.

Andrew Faulkner, who covered the game for THE AUSTRALIAN began his piece "Sydney's motley band of blue-collar journeymen and rejects yesterday punched a hole in Adelaide's bold pre-season ambitions."

Well THE REJECTS will do me this year and for quite a few more....

cheers

Crows supporters were as ferral as ever! In the first quarter they were generally slagging our boys off. Second quarter the umps copped it. Just before half time and during the third quarter they started to abuse their own (with some of the foulest language I've heard in a while). In the last quarter they were either leaving to avoid traffic or abusing Neil Craig or saying nothing at all.

Joy of joys, beating the, no .... whipping the Crows at home, bloody fantastic to be there. Enjoyed the fact that we played so well and scored so often that the normal foaming at the mouth Crows crowd was kept quiet. A very satisfying trip home.

A few observations

Egg on the face of many posters here (including me re Seaby) for suggesting Seaby, McGlynn and Kennedy were poor recruitment. Hats off to the recruiting staff for identifying these guys and getting them on the cheap.

Our ruck combo of Seaby and Mumford is superior to last year and because there is two of them, shouldn't tire either during matches or as he season progresses.

McGlynn had a blinder and may never kick five again but he gives 100%, 100% of the time and that is the Swans style. He really is infectious and if playing offensively will be a hard match up.

Kennedy is another good pick up with his best still to come. The big bodied inside midfielder that we needed going forward.

Hanneberry was fantastic, how good will he be when he matures?

Two more "new recruits" in Tadgh and Eski provide so much run, depth and flexibility. I'm worried Shaw is now being less influencial, time for a rethink here as to role?

Just watching the match ups against the Crows, Sydney got them correct all day, probably because of the depth and versatility of our squad. We won the coaching battle.

Disposal quality still needs to lift, we were better than the Crows but a top side would make us pay.

Forward structure not really working but lets give Bradshaw and White time to settle. Bradshaw did some clever things, he'll be a big plus as the year progresses.

Jetta will be a star, coming along very nicely, just needs to back himself more and wait to have that first bounce!

Depth will prove invaluable as the year progresses, it just might frustrate those players stranded in the twos.

We're in for a fun ride in 2010.

Unfortunately, didnt get to see the game as i had a big easter lunch to attend(for those who dont know, I'm of Greek background, and our easter fell the same as the Catholic easter this year and I had to have easter lunch with all the relatives), I did however take the transistor radio with me with the ear plugs and listened to it on SEN, much to the annoyment of my aunts and uncles. I had to tell them, "you dont understand, its the swans playing!!!, they're bigger than Jesus!!!!" They still wern't impressed.

Anyway, as I have said in an earlier post somewhere, this game is/was very important in terms of the players belief. If they could get over this hoodoo, early in the season, it will fill the playing group with enormous confidence and they will now go on any win many more games.

From what I heard on the radio, the 2nd quarter was phenominal, ROK and Hanners sounded like they were everywhere and the SEN boys just couldnt say enough about the Ruck combo of Seaby and Mumford.

Anyway thats all I have to say, I'm off to the TAB now to stick $20 on the swans to finish top 4 and another $20 on ROK for the Brownlow.

HooRoo.

I've just watched the replay as Sunday was just an exciting mess!
Our defence was outstanding. Hardly a free player across the ground. Right up to the final siren the pressure was on. Amazing.
Handy Dan Hanners was outstanding. He is quality and Kennedy really impressed me. Was that a tribute to the egg man on the banner?

The votes are in on the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award.

Adelaide v Sydney Swans
9 Ryan O?Keefe (Syd)
8 Ben McGlynn Syd
6 Patrick Dangerfield (Adel)
3 Mark Seaby (Syd)
2 Adam Goodes Syd
1 Jarrad McVeigh (Syd)

The AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year is the only award voted for by the coaches themselves. Coaches vote each week on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis. Coaches vote only on their own matches, but may vote for players on the opposing team.

It doesn't take very difficult maths to deduce the vote combinations that make up those scores, given we know each coach gives a 5,4,3,2,1. It is apparent, therefore, that Dangerfield got a 4 and a 2. Was that Roos being ultra generous or Craig being one eyed. The lad had a good second half but the game was practically over by then and he did almost nothing while the heat was still on. A pair of 3s wouldn't have surprised me but that one coach voted him more effective than either ROK or Mighty Mouse does.

Also slightly surprised that Seaby only got a vote from one of the two coaches. I would have thought he was clearly in the most influential 5 players on the ground, certainly more so than Goodes, McVeigh or Mackay (who had a good 3rd quarter but that was pretty much it).

Hannebery, Malceski, Jetta, O'Keefe, McVeigh. Potential to be a great midfield for years to come.
Absolutely! Just add Bird and stir.

It would either have been:

Roos: 5- McGlynn, 4- ROK, 3- Seaby, 2- Dangerfield, 1- McVeigh
Craig: 5- ROK, 4- Dangerfield, 3- McGlynn, 2- Goodes, 1- Mackay
or
Roos: 5- ROK, 4- Dangerfield, 3- McGlynn, 2- Goodes, 1- McVeigh
Craig: 5- McGlynn, 4- ROK, 3- Seaby, 2- Dangerfield, 1- Mackay

Personally, I can't quite see Craig giving Seaby votes and Roos not, while I can quite easily see Roos not giving Goodes votes as we all know Goodes doesn't tend to do well in the Swans B&F unless he's basically playing flawless footy. Roos marks him very hard. That in mind, I'm tempted to go with the first option, which would suggest Craig rating Dangerfield the second best on ground.

Absolutely! Just add Bird and stir.

Don't forget Tom Mitchell! ;)

I've come late to the party so I'll just note that the Eski was a ripper - anyone have I50 stats for him? They must have been way up there. And the comparison with one of the AFL greats at HB rebound in MacLeod was stark. Especially liked how so many of his entries were straight up the middle (similar to Aaron Davey's fabulous game v Pies). This makes a huge difference to our game style. Nice to have you back, Nick!

Belated I know, but gawd bless my partner for being a gadget nrrrd and buying a TiVo. Rewatched the game tonight and really, really have a good feeling about this season.

... OK, not the most in-depth analysis, but ... such a good game to rewatch.
