I will be flying up from Melbourne for the Swans V Bulldogs game on 23/7.

Have been to Sydney several times for daily business trips, but haven't stayed overnight on too many occasions. So don't know the place that well.

In respect to accomodation and things to do - what part of Sydney is the best place to stay? I was thinking Darling Harbour? Maybe the Rocks or CQ?

I'm not to fussy about the standard of accomodation, as long as it's not a dump. Happy to spend up to $250.00 (preferably less) on accomodation. Can anyone recommend a decent hotel?

Are there buses avaiable from the city that take you to the SCG on game day or am I best to get a cab?

I'd suggest basing where you stay more around how long you'll be here/what else you'd like to do- when we travel for games we tend to do that with the logic of being we'll get ourselves to the footy anyway for sure, but would like to be strolling distance to other groovy things.

So how long are you up for/what else do you think you'd like to do? The Sydney CBD (and Darling Harbour) can be a bit of a dead zone on a Sunday morning.

There's a shuttle bus to/from Central station for about $5 or so return.

Actually- Scott, what are your thoughts on including on RWOwiki a "where to stay when traveling to games" section? Either as part of the "Grounds" pages like the one below, or possibly just linked from it? Or a non-archiving discussion thread under RWO People on where to stay when visiting each ground that's linked from the various "Grounds" pages for those folks that are a bit intimidated by the idea of updating the Wiki?

Just a thought, I know when we've traveled for games I'd find a Swanscentric thing like that rather helpful.

I stayed at Oaks Goldsbrough apartments at Darling Harbour when I went up for the Carlton game. I couldn't really fault it, and I got the room for about $120 a night.

If you do stay in Darling Harbour, find an excuse to go here to eat- it's just the other side of the casino and worth the effort. http://www.signorelli.com.au/

Great idea. I've done a bit like that for getting to the game, not for staying.
Go for it. That is what it is for.

We stayed at the Ibis in ?Darling Harbour a few years ago. (My 2 kids and I).
From memory it was about $100 per night including Breakfast.
Not the flashest of places, but we only slept there, as we were too busy to just hang around in the room.

It's far enough away from the city to be enjpoyable, but close enough to be handy.
Buses run From Central to the SCG regularly, but it's not really that far to walk if you have the time.

Check out the Arts Hotel (formerly Sullivans) on Oxford St Paddington - it's apparently the closest hotel to the SCG - about an easy 15 minutes walk.

Home page of of Arts Hotel Sydney (formerly Sullivans Hotel Sydney) (http://www.artshotel.com.au/)

Rates are reasonable (about $150 on that Saturday evening) and from what I've seen it's a pretty decent hotel. There is always plenty going on in the Paddington area day or night, including shopping, eating and drinking, plus its a really interesting area to wander the streets. And its only a 10 minute bus ride into the city or circular quay, or about 20 odd minutes to Bondi Beach in the other direction.

I live fairly local and reckon it's in a pretty good spot.

Coming up Saturday morning and flying back later in the day on Sunday.

Won't have time to do much on Saturday, other than the game and out for dinner afterwards.

On the Sunday, just want to take it easy. Maybe go for a walk around the harbour near the bridge/opera house.

Taking the ex-wife up (strangely enough, we are still friends). She's never been to Sydney so probably will stick to the main attractions.

I have stayed here http://www.royalexhibition.com.au/ - next to Central station (it is above a pub) and a 20 minute walk to the ground, with good food around.

If you're flying up, worth thinking about getting the train at the airport. Two people still cheaper than a taxi, I think. Good hotels near Railway Square include: The Marque, on Railway Square opposite Central; Medina, also on Railway Square; Mercure, around the corner from Railway Square at corner of George St and Harris St. Handy to everything in the city, also for buses to the game. We've stayed at the first two, both comfortable, prices around $155-$240, Mercure a little cheaper.
