Teddy is OUT and LJ is in.

Great news.

The box of Kleenex is ready. The only chance the Swans have tonight was for me to miss the game.

So I have regretably missed the game, to give them any sort of chance of winning.

3AW said that since 2007, the Swans have played 30 games against teams above them and have lost 27. Make that 31 and 28 after tonight.

ugg
25th June 2011, 07:15 PM
This is going to test LJ. All three of their tall forwards are strong and can take a contested mark

ugg

Okay trying to think positive thoughts and this should mollify Cheer Squad

LJ might be tested defensively but hopefully he'll get a chance to show off his impressive distribution down in defence. The Pies won't know what hit 'em

liz

Maybe we'll see him forward. Presumably LRT will move back and take Cloke. I am struggling to think who their 3rd tall marking forward is. I imagine Reg will take Dawes.

3AW are saying that the Swans will be a defender short on either Cloke or Dawes. So how is that different to any other year?

Sportsbet are saying Collingwood $1:13 and and can't write a ticket for the Swans at $6:00

Jesse White can take a leaf out of Cloke's book and learn to play in front. If he plays in front he will learn how easy it is to use his body to draw a free.

25th June 2011, 08:45 PM
Well then that was very promising! We might not win, but if we play 4 quarters like that tonight I'll be very pleased. I think my harsh words to Mcveigh last week might have stirred something in him- he has been excellent so far and working really hard. We need to cut the silly errors out as the Pies are so good at punishing them, but so far I've been very pleased with what I've seen. Funny how much better we look when we take the game on and move the ball quickly.

Panttz
25th June 2011, 08:45 PM
McVeigh had a superb quarter. Keep it up boys!

Just gotta get Goodes into the play!

Nico
25th June 2011, 08:46 PM
White and Grundy = dumb.

Grundy knocks the ball away then gets petulant and slings Cloke; goal. When will the coaching panel get this blokes match up right at the start of a game.
White; playing behind as usual and slings his opponent which was totally unnecessary. Quick play on for a goal. No wonder he is a seconds player.

Cheer Squad
25th June 2011, 08:46 PM
Still can't win the bloody first quarter but we're competitive. C'mon boys, we can win this!

Jesse White can take a leaf out of Cloke's book and learn to play in front. If he plays in front he will learn how easy it is to use his body to draw a free.

mpr104

They competed well, but the worry is how easy Collingwood scored their goals - couple of them looked like a training run.

Melbournehammer
25th June 2011, 08:48 PM
By the way what is going on with our kicking I reckon we have had four to five kicks into the fifty have just been complete miskicks

wolftone57
25th June 2011, 08:49 PM
I am still really peeved with our skill level & that includes our experienced players. If the skill level was just a thing of the young blokes I would say inexperience is the prob but not if it is our older blokes who r being loose with their delivery. They are not backing each other up & not running to posi to collect a good posi. Being opened up right down the middle, not good for a team who prided itself on guarding the middle. What's more Pise go wide normally.

Melbournehammer
25th June 2011, 08:50 PM
And would tadgh get rid of these pathetic hand passes out of defence. His handpasses too frequently put his teammate under pressure

Dumb dumb dumb we are seriously showing something in a determination sense but we are completely thrown coming out of defence now, we simply have no targets and for god sake tadgh would you actually hit a target. Goodes then misses Jesse through his delay and white doesn't look good in his efforts

Umpire gifts goal to the woods from non-existent free
Dawes marks it over the lines no call

Collingwood beat us because they run harder. Watch how hard they run to position and when they spread. They are bloody sprinting. We are 3.4 pace jogging. i.e. they work harder than us. Mind you they do better than most teams on this but it has to be a big part of their success. Still, I expected a complete smashing by this stage and it hasn't happened so better than I had expected. Really impressed with our tackling and endeavour tonight, even if our skills are clearly second rate.

Another observation, I think we have seen the best of Adam Goodes. The question is whether from here he plateaus or goes into steep decline a la Chad Cornes.

wolftone57
25th June 2011, 09:19 PM
Why don't we move more & set up out of defense. We know the Pies are going to press so why not totally upset them by criss crossing & blocking off the ball. The Hawks do it & it works against the Pies. Also the very short kick to posi to players willing to work hard. We are lazy that is why sides like the Pies & Blues find us easy.

Its not just you....

Yep, I agree totally - I reckon 3 or 4 have been on the full but not called.

McVeigh is at least having a go this week. White's tackle on Harry O'Brien in that qtr was pathetic - I bet McGlynn or Jude would have got a good hold on him.

Left field idea - maybe chuck Goodesy in the ruck?? He seems in a bit of a rut and maybe the freedom might help. Yeah I know about his knee etc but Seaby is already beating Wood and we are still losing.

mcs
25th June 2011, 09:26 PM
We are giving it a real hot go, but our skill errors and decision making really hurt us in that quarter. Umpires have been woeful, but I'm happy enough that we are still hanging on in the game- I was worried we would get pummelled all night. If we play the 4 quarters out we can keep it more than respectable, and if we stopped giving the Pies a leg up every 5 seconds with silly errors, who knows?

Nico
25th June 2011, 09:26 PM
lewis Jono should have taken the ball, inexperience

Inexperience! Rubbish, if that was the 2's odds on he would have marked it. He has played more than enough footy to know he had to mark that time. He's in the big time tonight.

They are a little more desperate. Like Carlton last week they seem to win those close in contests and the ball squeezes out to them more often that not.

wolftone57
25th June 2011, 09:38 PM
i realise we are not in the same league as the Pies, Blues, Cats or Hawks but what peeves me is that the Umpies see fit to make it even more one sided by giving them easy kicks. The big earners for the AFL Pies, Blues, Cats & Bombers seem to get it good from the Umpies, I wonder if it has something to do with money as we can only get 38,000 into the SCG & are only getting 25 to 30k whereas these sides pull 40k plus every week. That free to Daws against Grundy was soft at best, I could not see a push at all, Daws just leapt forward, it is what I would call a dive & in the sub leagues would have been play on. We are a long way from the level needed to beat these blokes but we need to do things a bit differently. We are being opened up down the guts again, ala last week, we need to plug it. I would put Everrit in defence as a loose player & put Goodes in the mid for the rest of the game. He is just playing for frees in the f/line & they know how we set up with him so vary & take him out & let the forwards work on their own. I wish the big guys would lead to opposite sides of the ground or at least 40 metres apart.

25th June 2011, 10:59 PM
I think that 50 against McVeigh was ridiculous- plus the 50 was about 95 - a true 50 would have been not even inside the F50!

What a shame we couldn't find that way to get over the line. But that was an absolutely sensational effort from the boys- I am so proud of them. After last week's debacle I really feared for tonight's game, but while we were helped by the Pies inaccurate kicking, the effort we put in really did keep us in the game, and had it been for a bounce of the ball or two, we may of won the game. Lots and lots of positives to take from tonight.

Tonight showed just what potential our team has. It might sound strange, but that might be the most important loss of the season - we might just have realised that we are good enough to genuinely compete with the best teams. The young guys especially will take a lot from tonights effort.

We had a lot of excellent performances tonight- but I want to give Mcveigh a shout. I gave him a real serve from the boundary line last week against Carlton. He stood up tonight and played much much better- leading like a Captain should and I hope my spray may have helped in that! :)

wolftone57
25th June 2011, 10:59 PM
If you think we were good tonight think again, we were good in parts but we need to learn how to deliver the ball by hand & foot correctly. We don't have the ball skills at this stage to take on the big sides & if the Pies had kicked strait we would have been slaughtered. I like the fact that under pressure tharted to doubt themselves, unfortunately our blokes didn't believe they could win by giving the ball up far too easily. the same story too much bad delivery & if Adam Goodes is a Captain I wish he would start acting like one instead of playing for frees all day. It gives a bad example to the rest of the team. Roosie used to pull him in line & tell him to get real but Horse seems happy to let him play for frees. Ok, he kicked a few goals but 2 of them were gifts, he needs to get more involved & being in the forward line is not the way. He is much better out of the square. well done to the boys tonight as we were not expected to even get within a league of this mob

Seabs - love him. Dominant performance tonight.

Big effort by Macca, the best I've seen him put in for a while.

Smith is just awesome IMO. Grace under fire week in, week out. His biggest test tonight and he didn't disappoint.

Jesse & Bevo really had a crack tonight. Not easy to come back in against the competition benchmark after months in the 2's.

Where were u I noticed a few cheap Pies frees in both halves but cheapies for us? Where exactly were they? In the forward line lioke theirs, no! In the Centre line like theirs, no! Oh in the back half, at CHB, HBF, KWL! So thats our cheap frees, theirs got goals or points, as Dawes push against Grundy, all he did was lunge forwars & the Umpie blew it up. The replay clearly showed Grundy not interfering at all just holding ground after Dawes over ran the contest. There were several incidents in the last that should have gone our way in close situations but they only went theirs. ROK push in back;ignored, Kennedy push in back;ignored, Hannaberry push in face;ignored, Swann too long in tackle; free kick. I don't think we did badly but I don't think the Umpies did well & if a team is Pies, Blues, Bombers or Cats who draw crowds in Melb then they get a good go

I believe the Blues & the Hawks will beat the Pies & next week have a cool 50 on the Hawks especially at the G as I believe their young group will kill the Pies for hardness. That is what we lack, we need to be harder, give Currie a go as he is really hard & gives no quarter. both Birdie & Kanga played very well but it was Kanga that broke the packs when it counted in the last half & if he had of got the free he should have in the last it may have been a different result. Bolts stepped up in the last 3 after a laMENTABLE 1ST. I wish Jesse was our saviour in attack & 2nd ruck but I don't think so. LRT was a bit out of touch down back as he has been playing forward too long. I thought he could have played the whole game back last week & should have, just bad coaching. We contested very well in the last half as we were killed in the first & if not for their bad kicking we would have been looking at a thrashing at half time. We were good after half time as I think our blokes truly believed for the first time in ages they could win. Just bad luck & a bit of bad umpiring in the end.

This is my analysis.

Before the game I thought 3 things had to happen for us to win.

1. Collingwood had to play below par. TICK
2. We had to play above par. TICK
3. We had to get lucky. A BIT EACH WAY

It was a great effort, especially when you contrast it to last week's game, but in reality Collingwood should have had it wrapped up by 3 quarter time. That's why ol' Micky was so testy on the sidelines. They were the number 1 side in goalkicking accuracy going into this game. You'll never see Daisy Thomas miss 3 shots like those again.

Our ball use, in particular going forward is a mess - we rely too much on having players run forward into space rather than have proper forwards leading out from the forward line. Hawthorn showed yesterday that you don't need to have big, dominant forwards to kick goals, you need a good structure in place combined with good skills. Down the other end, I really felt for Reg and LRT as Cloke and Dawes were just too big. One-on-one there aren't many defenders who can go with them and their contested marking. They needed help down back but the other defenders were too focussed on the Pies' smalls to really give our talls a hand.

Horse deserves credit for the game plan tonight though. The second quarter aside, we weren't sucked into the vortex that is the Collingwood forward press and did manage to break it often. Using LJ at the kick-ins was a surprise and should be persevered with. He offers something different from the usual suspects Kennelly, Malceski, Mattner and Shaw - in particular his ability to clear the 50m line and beyond to break the congestion of the zone.

Losing KJ will be a big blow, not sure what the prognosis is but let's hope he's not out for too long. While guys like JPK and ROK are integral parts of the midfield setup, if they went down (touch wood) it wouldn't be so bad as we have similar types in Moore or Parker to replace them but we don't have anyone who can give us KJ's clean ball-winning ability from the stoppages.

Cats won by only 3 points so I'm entitled to my opinion to think the Pies are still the benchmark. If you watch all the AFL shows you'll find that most commentators hold that same belief. So I'm pretty up with the plot thanks.

Agree on White (he's frustrating isn't he) but I'm not convinced on Currie to be honest. I watch a lot of reserves and while he goes okay j just have my doubts he can make that next step. Pyke is the one we need to bring back. He looked short of a gallop today but after a couple of runs in the Ressies I'm sure he'll be knocking on the door of selection.

Sure, but Bird doesn't do as much with it.
Some lazy efforts at times I thought.

Gee Scott I could argue that Kennedy just blazes away going forward. A couple of times in the last quarter he was clear going forward of centre and went wide to a contest when it was clear that when we went direct to about 20 metres out the Pies defence got shaky. What both Bird and Kennedy did in the second half was get boot to ball under pressure which seemed to catch Collingwood out and make it a one on one contest with the ball bouncing and bobbing around. What we did better this week was have players inside 50 metres at the contest, rather than the opposing defenders being let just whisk the ball away.

Terrific effort from the boys tonight. I'm not prepared to say the umps cost us the game, there were other ways we could have won/avoided losing. But an exciting and immensely encouraging performance from blokes all over the park. Macca, Josh, Seaby, Hanners, Goodes, Bird (who had good reason to be exhausted), Reid, Shaw (great game on Dale Haircut, who irritates the life out of me, wonderful to see Rhyce getting up his nose). Add Marty, ROK, Bevo, Jack while he was on the ground, Jesse in the ruck and at times around the ground, Malceski, where do you stop? We put on fantastic pressure, as good as anything I've seen from the group this season, and Collingwood were making mistakes.
And I take no notice of the "If Collingwood had kicked straight ..."; there have been times we haven't kicked straight and it was our fault, the boot was on the other foot tonight, or the chewy was on the other boot, or something, and if my aunt had cojones she'd be my uncle, and so on.
It might be the happiest loss I've ever seen.

I'm just home and can't believe any of the negative comments were from anyone at the game. The Pies are a great team with awesome skills. But we looked the harder team at the end - though they straightened out enough to win as champion teams do. I'm guessing that the negatives were from those watching on TV and being brainwashed by the Pie fan commentators. If Goodes started the game as he finished we would have won comfortably. Macca was on fire (the first time for a few years?), Bird was in everything. If you think we were sloppy you weren't seeing the pressure out there. And, although we let them get free a few times - as we did (!) our structure was so much better and we looked a lot better team than we have in a lot of our sloppy wins. If (make that IF) we keep playing like that we won't lose many games for the rest of the year.

I hate the 'honourable loss' idea but if there is one we had it tonight. And I would have paid a year's membership just to hear the ground go off when we went in front in Q4. Good times ahead I'm thinking.

I think I need to take back some bad things I've said about Jarrad McVeigh.

Why? He desereved a bake after last week and to his credit had a real go, but that 50 metres was plain dumb.

Probably happiest I've ever been after a loss and a little disappointed at some of the negativity ... Sure we didn't win but we had to respond after last week and we certainly did. We went in with a host of new players and played a different style to much of this year and it nearly worked ... A lot of positives from tonight for me and it can really set us up for the second half of the year.

I think I need to take back some bad things I've said about Jarrad McVeigh.

No need, he's been rubbish this year so you've been spot on but he was a lot better tonight. Keeps improving like that and he'll be back to playing the football we know he's capable of.

Couple of things cost us tonight IMO.... And it wasn't the umpires.

Firstly, I would of liked to see LRT go the Cloke a lot earlier.

Secondly, and obviously,we desperately need a target, and goal kicker, up forward. It would make a huge difference.

Loved the way we took the game on tonight, let's hope it continues.

And loved the long bomb up the centre kick ins with a ruckmen in the area. Reminded me of our kick ins to Dunks back in the 90's.

Well, I haven't enjoyed a loss so much in ages. Had the pleasure of screaming for my team and wishing, hope against hope, that we could will them over the line. Mumford, Rohan and Richards were sitting directly behind us in the stand and were getting right into the game. Lovely blokes.

I usually hate reading "brave" and "gutsy" and "valiant"". Those are North Melbourne words for tough but not very good (or Gold Coast now, meaning talented but completely disorganised). But yeah. They'll be right this time.

We had a lot of excellent performances tonight- but I want to give Mcveigh a shout. I gave him a real serve from the boundary line last week against Carlton. He stood up tonight and played much much better- leading like a Captain should and I hope my spray may have helped in that! :)
Whatever you said to him MCS, make sure you say it again next week :)

This is the best I have felt after a collingwood game... I don't know what that means bit I think it's a good thing.

As it was the first time in six years we've been competitive against Collingwood, let's hope it means that our drought against them is almost finished.

Why? He desereved a bake after last week and to his credit had a real go, but that 50 metres was plain dumb.

I hardly think it was on purpose- I really thought he just accidently passed the ball back too hard and it went over the Pies players head. Anyway- the crime in that 50 was not so much the 50 but the Umpires measurement of 50- it was closer to about 90 as it was on the back end of the square at our defending end and the mark he set was I thought about 12-15 metres inside their forward 50.

Mcveigh had a real go tonight- he just needs to do that every week though!

Amazing, gutsy performance. Happiest I have ever been after a loss.

Need this form to be kept for the next month or so. A loss to the Crows next week was be devestating.

I H.A.T.E. that train ride home. It's the train ride from hell. It was slower than ... and I only had to go one stop. Maybe if the players had to catch that train back to Central, they'd endeavour to just try that little bit harder next year!!

Can you say that was a fantastic loss??? I honestly thought we'd lose by much more, but I forgot that Nathan Buckley is their behinds coach and as usual, a job well done!! We would have been slaughtered by a whole lot more had their kicking been straight. We had some pretty bad turnovers, and sadly, yet again, it was a bit of a case of too much too little too late. Gotta learn to play the whole four quarters like the game is close and there's five minutes to go!!

If only we had five more minutes!!
