NEAFL Round 15
Gold Coast Suns Reserves v Sydney Swans Reserves
Saturday 9th July 2011 3.00pm

The Ressies face arguably their toughest task of the season when they play the Suns Reserves who are 2nd in the Northern Conference.

Changes
In: Seaby (senior demotion), Everitt (senior demotion), White (senior demotion), Parker (senior demotion), Heath (???), Bevan (senior demotion)
Out: Trent Dennis-Lane (foot), Daniel Currie (???), Gary Rohan (hamstring), Matthew Spangher (senior promotion)

There are major changes with 6 ins, 5 being dropped from the senior team, with 4 outs mainly due to injury which should result in a big shuffle-around.

Dennis-Lane, Spangher and to a lesser extent Currie have been the major source of goals in the past month and now the responsibilty will have to fall on the likes of White, Bevan, Johnston and/or Everitt. White is set to reprise his forward-backup ruck to Seaby role due to Currie's absence.

Parker will add some bite to the midfield setup and has a prospective clash against hardnut Daniel Harris. In defence, there is no obvious matchup for a forward of the size of Dixon who gave Lewis Johnston trouble in the previous game between these two sides. Everitt has been named at CHB but he will have similar weight issues playing on Dixon.

Talking points

Everitt - Hasn't played much football lately due to sub duties, will he line up in defence or attack?
Seaby - How will be the big Seabs rebound from getting dropped? The GC have some young and athletic ruckmen who could test Seaby in his work around the ground?
Johnston - Will this be the game that Lewis gets re-instated as a full time forward. I realise that Spangher has a bit more body size than him, but I think it might have rankled Lewis just a little to have a defender get the call up as a forward over him.

Summary
Will the effects of having such an easy two weeks be deletorious to the Reserves' chances of winning this match? Regardless of the result, the coaches will be looking forward to the tougher competition that this match promises and hopefully it won't be as much of a cakewalk as the Round 7 game.

2) I thought Southport were a strong club.
3) Daniel Harris in the 2's?? No wonder he's tearing it up.

4) great work mate.

Rory Pryor is listed on the Academy intake page.

There was a Lachlan Pryor who played a few games as a toppie for the reserves a few years back and who then got a scholarship with the Kangaroos. He didn't get a spot on the Roos list, and now plays for North Shore, I think. I believe he has also made some SFL representative squads. Highly likely that this is younger brother, given he also seems to be a North Shore listed affiliated player.

Absolutely correct, as usual Liz, and great work again ugg.

Rory Pryor is indeed the younger brother of Lachlan and has broken into the North Shore seniors this season. He joined Brandon Jack as a NAB Rising Star nominee last week (Sydney AFL - SportingPulse (http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?client=1-1047-0-0-0&sID=53282&&news_task=DETAIL&articleID=16235060&sectionID=53282)).

Well, that became horrid. I know they were a few players down but not enough to explain how insipid a performance that was. Very hard to pick any players who could be described as decent. Jesse might get my vote as least awful. Seaby was passable. Everitt look a few marks. Now I am really struggling to think of any positives. Ok, maybe Bevo wasn't too bad.

Max needs another haircut. LJ was very ordinary even before taking a knock to his knee which made him lame for most of second half. McNeil not up to usual busy standard. Sumner did a few good things but was in and out of game.

Not sure what happened to Nipper. Evaporated from game and was seen running around boundary at half time, quite fast, not obviously injured. Took no part in second half.

I'm curious how the younger players and the toppies looked in a side that was under the pump, and under manned for a change.

It's easy to look good on the right side of a 12 goal score line, as they have all season, but it's how you respond in games like this, that gives a better indication of what sort of character you have as a player ... this kind of game, in the middle of this sort of season, tends to expose any downhill skiers ...?

Doesn't correspond with the goalkickers on sportingpulse or even which Moody kicked goals.

ugg
9th July 2011, 11:26 PM
So looking at sportingpulse, we had 12 listed players line up (they had Parker in there but surely he didn't play?) and hence down to 11 once Nipper got sent off.

liz and TripleB and anyone else who were there, if you could identify the numbers the topups wore it would help the RWOWiki entry.

liz

Pretty sure there was just one Moody goal, to Eric, though overall Andrew was probably livelier. Byron certainly kicked a goal.

Not sure I'll be able to help much with top up numbers. Think Pryor might have been wearing 57. The Moodys were in their normal jumpers as was Murphy. Can't remember much about any of the others. It was a pretty hard game to get into given how lame the Swans were.

Well if we got flogged in ressies, it means the dropped players would have been crap in seniors too. Good reason to drop them and promote others.

10th July 2011, 10:02 PM
I got there before half time and noted we didn't have any interchange happening whilst GC had a revolving door going.

Gordon ran laps at half time and again after the ressies game, Johnston was hobbling most of the second half, Jesse looked a bit sore too.

Having not seen any ressie players before, I only knew them by their Record numbers and not sure if all played - 47 Potter, 48 Guthrie, 49 Kenny, 50 Brain, 51 Lynch, 53 Murphy, 54 Wales, 57 Robinson. No mention in the Record of the Moodyboys but there were a couple who may have been them.

None of the toppies stood out to me. Of the listed plyers, Sumner impressed most, first time I've seen him but good evasive skills. Strikes me as a likely small forward type because of this. No one screamed out "pick me" for next week in the seniors.

47 and 48 were Andrew and Eric Moody. Murphy did play (and wore his regular number) and Wales was out there too but didn't look to see what number he was wearing. He is the solidly built, moderately tall red head.

I am not game to write Ugg style notes on that game. To be honest, my attention wandered a bit after it became evident how poor the Swans were. I reckon that 12 listed players is about the number the team needs to become a pretty good outfit, and maybe against a regular ACT team they would still have been competitive. I suspect part of the issue was the type of listed players available. We were reasonably well manned in defence (not that it always showed) with the likes of Heath, McKaigue, Johnston and Otten, and had two tall targets in White (when not rucking) and Everitt. But the midfield was very bare, especially after Gordon's exclusion from the game. Poor McNeil had none of the support he usually gets, and - I suspect quite significantly - was without Currie tapping it down his throat. Sure, he did have Seaby and White, so we were hardly bereft in the ruck, but Seaby didn't manage the same taps to advantage that Currie frequently produces. And of course, having fewer legitimate midfielders didn't help matters.

Both teams struggled with height in defence, and when the Swans were able to get the ball into their forward line, both Everitt and White presented pretty well. It just didn't get down there often enough.

I noted earlier that White was my "least bad on ground" and to his credit, he had a real dip and looked like he truly cared that the team was getting flogged. His first goal came from a great contested mark falling backwards to collect a clever kick from Andrew Moody. He also took two genuine marks on strong, fast leads, but failed to convert either of the goals. He worked hard in the ruck and had a few possessions around the ground. By the end he looked exhausted and slightly lame.

Seaby took a lot of marks because he got himself into good spots and was tall. He looked a bit plodding, though.

Sumner was a mixed bag for me. He certainly has some tricks, when he tackles, the player generally stays tackled and he buzzed around until the end. My slight beef with him - and it may not even be a fair beef - is that he sometimes hovers around the outside of packs waiting for the ball to come out, rather than throwing himself into every contest. Possibly it is just him being smart, or maybe he is playing to instruction. But when you're used to watching Bolton, McGlynn, Jack et al, and even Parker, McNeil and Moore at reserves level, throw themselves in headfirst at every opportunity, it is a bit disconcerting watching Sumner wait for the ball to come out to him at times. If there was ever a game where some kamikaze pack diving was required, even if ineffective, it was probably this one, if only to give the tenative toppies a bit of rev up.

Bevan was typical Bevan. He busted a gut all game, won some wonderful contests with his relentless attack on the ball, but was sloppy with his disposal at times. Everitt took some decent marks, mostly on leads against a shorter opponent, but wasn't particularly smart with his use of the ball, trying sometimes to be too clever when something basic was required.

McKaigue and Heath both struggled one -on-one in defensive contests, often done for height. But for large passges of the game the ball was coming into the Suns' forward line with such ease there was little they could have done to stop the flood. Still, both would have been pretty disappointed with their games, I suspect.

The biggest let down for me was Lewis, mostly because he was probably the one player out there I most want to see really come on. Even allowing for the delivery to the forwards, I thought he looked slow to react, beaten often on leads and in the end, almost giving up. His kicking was mostly indiscrimnate. I must acknowledge that he took what looked to be a painful knock to the knee. I think it was just before half-time. He was attempting one of his signature moves, running through the middle and signalling for whoever had the ball to handball to him so he could launch at goal. Whoever had the ball (I think it was one of our more experienced talls, maybe Seaby?) messed up the delivery and so when Johnston tried to take possession he collided with an opponent. After that he looked like he really didn't want to be out on the ground. He probably didn't. But with the team down on numbers, he had to stay. Without knowing how badly hurt he was, I don't know how critical to be of his game but he really didn't impress me with his defensive efforts even before the knock.

This was a game where either Otten or Kruger might have stood up and taken a more central role than they usually do with the team so undermanned. Neither did. Otten was particularly flabby, I thought, running around like a bit of a headless chook. I am almost ready to take back my taking back of my earlier lack of enthusiasm about him, which I was forced to do after a couple of very good games. But as someone commented earlier in this thread, you find out more about players when things aren't going well than when they are in teams winning by 100pt margins, and for me, he failed to demonstrate he could step it up when most needed.

Thanks for the write up Liz. Sounds like not too many changes ahead for the Freo game barring injury. Still hoping TDL may get a call up despite missing on the weekend.

It's not hard to pick the Moody boys ... when they stand still. They're both about 3 foot 6 inches, yet play like they're 10 feet tall.
I'd so love it if they stayed with us.

Thanks Liz - a valuable impression of what it was like. Combination of undermanned and not playing hard enough for each other seems like a fatal disorder. But then it usually is.

I cannot see any captain material in the lineup. Would that lack of direction ON the ground make a big hole? If so, why were the "seniors" not taking charge when they could have made an impression on the coaches. Not time to bring out the stun gun yet, but.....oh for the days of Captain Bligh and the cat-of-nine-tails....

Not really knowing the numbers of listed players for Gold Coast at all, going up against tougher competition than the last couple of weeks whilst only playing with 12 (and then 11) listed players I think it's kind of understandable to get beaten? Without having seen the game it's hard to say, but I don't really think it's time for Henry to be having them crawl laps of the SCG at training. :)

That I do understand Stella, not having the cattle to make it a better contest. I was just responding to liz's laments.....from what she was pointing out, there didn't seem any direction on the ground itself. Guess I am used to seeing Luke organising the midfield, and have taken it for granted. And always trust Doggy to take charge, as he is a natural leader. Its just that there didn't seem to be any other players stepping into the vacancy (on appraisal of the R&W reports), when it was needed, and warranted. Maybe that is why Nipper got into trouble, he was over-trying? she said hopefully?

I didn't see the second report for Nipper as it was on the other side of the ground (and they don't show replays on the big screen at reserves games). From where I was sitting it looked to occur in a ground level tackling contest.

The first incident I did get a clear view of, although again, without the benefit of a replay, it is hard to really assess it. Nipper collided with an oncoming opponent and looked to make head high contact. Did he actively go to bump him? I didn't think so at the time. It looked more of a collision. But it was one of those types of incident that the AFL MRP usually looks at, not unlike the ones that Jude, ROK and Jack have all received reprimands for over the last season and a bit. I don't think it was due to "over trying" by Nipper. Maybe just a bit of clumsiness.

I don't think getting beaten was the issue. But I do think that the lack of fight, especially in the second half, would have disappointed Henry.

Spent a few extra days away and got back late last night.

ugg, the moody boys wore #47 and #48, the taller in #47. pretty sure it was Kenny in #49, Tim Wales was in his usual #54, Murphy in #53.

The other toppies I did not recognise. One of them wore #57 and another in #50 or #51. It was certainly not Mitch Thompson. None of the other usual toppie suspects played (Lynch, Potter, Guthrie etc.), although we probably knew they had other committments.

As for the game, we were destined not to win from the time Nipper got his marching orders, but we probably already beaten at that time anyway, as early as it was.

The Suns had a pretty strong side in and all these guys who are just getting rotated thru the seniors for a game or two have quite obviously improved in leaps and bounds. Krakouer tore us a new one early, but even then spent a huge amount of time on the bench as they swung the changes to their side continuously. It was criminal watching just 1 guy on the bench for us. The GC kids all stood up with guys like Patrick and Liddy having days out.

We obviously missed Parker and co. getting the ball in the middle. Bulldogs greatest talent in the slower ressies level is organising the troops and we missed him bigtime as well.

The backs were under seige and LJ was really having a poor one, even before rolling the ankle just before halftime.

As for leadership, it was worth noting that Campbell Heath did all the 'C'mon, let's do it for the gipper' stuff in the circle pre-quarter and when coming off at halftime, but we just didn't have the cattle on the day and what we did have were cramping and buggered due to no rotations.

Agree with Liz about Jesse. Whilst he didn't put in a performance that said 'give me another chance', his endeavour when clearly knackered in the last quarter was outstanding and deserves full credit for that, if nothing else.

ugg, any news on nipper on the tribunal front? The second report was soft as a pudding and given it forced him from the ground and cost us any chance of making it a contest, the umpy sure did stuff that one up.

That throws a spanner in the works. Eric is the taller one (or so we've assumed) and he's been wearing #48. BSA5 had Stephen Wray in #51 and Mitch Crawford in #52 the week before so I assumed they kept those numbers.

I sent a tweet to @NEAFL_Eastern asking about Nippa and about an hour ago I received a reply from @mastersjack who is the manager of AFL Canberra "nippa and sumner free to play"

Good work.

I was not at all worried about Nippers second one, but I thought they may have deemed the first one clumsy and worth a week. That said, it may well have gotten him a week (or more) in AFL seniors, as is the madness known as the MRP.

Sumners I missed because I had my head down tweeting . From the lack of any real remonstrations from Suns players, I was hoping it was nothing too serious.

Actually, Wray was in 53 last week.

Eric is definitely the taller one, I guess they just swapped numbers this week?

EDIT: Looking at the footage on the Swans website, Andrew is definitely still in 47, Eric in 48. Don't know what you're seeing Ugg. At 41 seconds you get a good glimpse of 48, definitely Eric. At 1 minute you can see 47, and it's definitely the shorter, stockier Andrew. At the 1:59 mark you can clearly see again 48 is Eric. At 2:27 once again it's definitely Eric.

I am almost certain the Moodys were wearing their normal guernseys.

And I think 57 was Pryor - a big solid lad, though maybe not quite as solid as big brother was at the same age. He did a couple of useful things in the game.

Yep, as I said above, definitely looks like him, but you never get a great look at his face, so it's tough to tell, especially without knowing what Prior looks like. Either way, I liked the attack on the ball!
