NEAFL Round 17
Sydney Swans Reserves v GWS Giants
Saturday 23rd July 2011 10.00am
Blacktown Olympic Park

Note new time and location!

The weather gods continue to toy with us poor ressies fans and so another SCG-scheduled game has yet again been rescheduled. A home game against the Giants has now turned into an away game at Blacktown.

GWS will be battle-hardened having played all the 3 AFL Reserves sides and the top Northern Conference side (NT Thunder) in the 4 of their past 5 games, and have come away with a respectable 2 wins. The Swans will be severely depleted in listed player numbers and will have another tough task after hanging on against Eastlake the week before.

Past Meetings
2011
Pre-Season Reserves 23.16 (154) defeated GWS 8.10 (58) @ ANZ Stadium

After a lethargic and mistake-riddled start, the Reserves began to use their bigger bodies and greater experience to beat the Giants into submission. Jed Lamb starred as a medium forward, displaying adroitness when the ball hit the ground as well as accurate finishing with his set shots. Mike Pyke impressed in the ruck and when he rested forward booted 3 goals from difficult angles.

Goals: Lamb 6, Pyke 3, Haren 3, Gordon 2, Currie 2, Murphy, Kruger, Seaby, Brain, Robinson, McKaigue, Sumner
Best: N/A

R6 GWS 3.9 (27) defeated by Reserves 12.15 (87) @ Manuka Oval

GWS were much improved from their previous showing against the Reserves, and managed to keep the contest low-scoring and tight right up till the end of the 3rd quarter. The Swans kicked away in the last quarter but onlookers left very impressed with the disciplined and well-drilled side that Sheedy and Choco have managed to build up. Luke Parker was immense in the midfield and up forward, earning a debut in the next week based on this performance. Lewis Johnston and Chris McKaigue were lauded for their defensive work, especially their spoiling down back.

Goals: White 3, Haren 2, E.Moody 2, Dennis-Lane 2, Parker, Bevan, McNeil
Best: Parker, Johnston, McKaigue, Thompson, Roberts-Thomson, McNeil

R12 GWS 3.11 (29) defeated by Reserves 17.13 (115) @ Blacktown Olympic Park

A tight and intriguing struggle developed during the early stages of the game where GWS's pressure and tackling strangled the Swans' movement of the ball. After an adjustment during the second quarter where the Sydney players started to kick longer and more direct, they managed to break the Giants' swarm and coast to a comfortable victory. Daniel Currie starred both in the ruck and at full forward finishing with 4 goals. Luke Parker was the pick of the dominant midfielders.

Goal Kickers: Currie 4 Gordon 3 White Dennis-Lane Otten Everitt 2 McNeil Meredith
Best Players: Parker, Heath, Meredith, White, Gordon, Currie

Last Round
Reserves 15.11 (101) defeated Eastlake 12.9 (81)
With just 9 listed players available, the Reserves' cause was not helped by the withdrawals of key midfielders Brett Meredith and Campbell Heath in the first half. However led by the experienced and tough bodies of Jarred Moore, Mark Seaby and Paul Bevan and receiving great performances from regular topups James Brain and Kane Murphy, the Swans held off a second half surge from the Demons to record an impressive victory

This is a tentative team list.

9 listed players again and there is still doubt on Meredith's hamstrings. McKaigue looks like to be Izzy's most likely opponent, almost by default given the injuries to Johnston, Heath and Spangher and Otten's use in the ruck as a backup to Seaby.

GWS Squad TBA

4. Israel FOLAU

Summary
GWS have been competitive in the last 2 games, managing to keep within distance of the Swans for 2 and 3 quarters respectively. However their inability to convert their chances into goals proved costly in both games with the Swans' miserly defence preventing Izzy and co. from having good shots on goal.

The Swans did extremely well last week with their weakened squad but GWS will be another step up. The Giants are in good form, well rested from their bye and will be looking forward to finally getting the Swans' scalp.

I know I said last week would be my last preview but I couldn't help myself. :p

Suffice to say I won't be live tweeting from this game as a view from the skies over Europe isn't the best vantage point for Blacktown. It's disappointing to hear that the change has resulted in a few regulars being unable to attend but I look forward to hearing from those that do.

I maaaaaay go. A lot depends on how awake I am tomorrow morning, and how much fuel is in my car! But I'm gonna have so few chances to go this year after this, I feel like I should make the most of the opportunity. So pissed it's been moved to Blacktown though, I live 10 minutes walk from the SCG/Lakeside!

Reckon Kruger should be a starter. Chatted with him trackside last weekend and the game off was due to the melon knock he copped the previous week, he said he was fine and ticked off he wasn't playing v Eastlake. The mandatory rest a reflection of the new concussion rules I guess! Other than Kruger being included we do look pretty frail. GWS coming off the bye last weekend should be well rested and by the look of their team list, at pretty much full strength. Their lads that had been missing in the previous couple months due to RAMS, NT, Nationals duty are all back. At least with the game being @ BOP we can sit in some sort of comfort and be dry!! Oh there are also no over hanging tree's at BOP. PS: great report as per usual Ugg, have a cool holiday!

Murphy and Bulldog are bests. TDL is working hard and playing more around CHF. I think the coaches would be happy with his effort. Jesse and Seaby are interchanging ruck and FF, but neither are starring, but not bad either. GWS are fairly tall in the forward line and our backs aren't coping real well.
It's heavy going, the centre square which is a cricket pitch in summer is very heavy.

what's worrying is we seem incapable of beating any of the AFL linked sides. That may say something about depth or it may be that we have too many players out as in LJ & Lamby

It's the personnel we have in at the moment. We have a lot of young toppies so we will struggle.

We have beaten the Suns, Lions and GWS twice this year with a lot more listed players playing.

Reasonably predictable outcome today, other than the pathetic crowd!!!
From the advertised list, no Meredith, Bevan (sighted running laps at the SCG at dusk?) or Lynch.
If we present with 8 and 9 listed players and half a dozen 17 y.o.'s against the better sides on a regular basis, we will struggle.
We managed a brave win last week, but further depleted this week, and even with just as big an effort, it was always going to prove to be a bridge too far!
We were able to stay in touch until late in the 2nd quarter, but as expected with such a young line up, the back end of the later quarters were a big challenge mentally and physically.
I would have hoped for more from TDL and White in the leadership area. I would imagine that Krueger will be expected to show more soon.
On the positives, Seaby retains his form, Nipper continues to throws himself into contests without fear, and "Bulldog" was good again, and flew the flag, refusing to take any rubbish from a couple of cocky GWS upstarts late in the game.
Murphy again found the ball in attack. The more experienced scholarship/academy players like Guthrie, Brain, Kenny and Potter were confident and accountable and generally matched their direct opponents, whilst the younger toppies gained valuable game time and experience at a higher level of competition.
GWS are showing the benefits of being a "one team" club, able to play a mostly unchanged side, week in week out. The experience their elite young recruits are gaining from consistent game time against stronger opposition is now showing, and they deserve praise for their big improvement from our previous meeting. They tended to penalise us on the turnover, like a good side, and clearly, the talent they have drafted from the AIS is improving and gaining confidence all of the time (will be scary in the future!).
Izzy is an athlete - kicked 3 I think, but more importantly was looking to do the team things (may need to get a bit more greedy as a forward) but his obvious improvement was there for all to see.
Over all, a bit like when we met them previously, with a good big guy getting the better of a good little guy!

As an aside, I think I have been to BOP about 8 times for various NAB Cup/SAFL /rep/ junior rep matches , and sadly, this NEAFL "showcase" of the second tier of AFL would have attracted the smallest crowd I have encountered there! C'mon you GWS fans! (both of you!) ... what's happening???

I was out there for the second half and I'd guess there were 100 spectators at that point. GWS weren't given much opposition from our kids so it's hard to gauge just how well they're coming together.

Interesting move in the 4th was Playfair using Seaby at the centre bounces and having Jesse in the square for I guess roving and bulldozing purposes to try and win some clearances. Had a laugh late in the game when I swear Jesse was going the wrong way before his teammates snapped him out of it.

I've got to be honest and say that TDL still looks relatively unfit and was blowing hard in the 4th. Still not ready for the seniors I reckon.

Rooster was sitting just in front of us in the stands. He looked fit, so hopefully we'll see him back after the bye. On the field, there didn't seem to be much effort, and certainly not compared to the game I saw five weeks ago. Yes, the team was undermanned, but it seems like they have an issue when they are challenged, falling away to big losses.
