THE loss of utility Daniel Motlop with a suspected shoulder injury soured the Kangaroos 23-point victory over a lacklustre Sydney at Optus Oval last night.

Motlop fell awkwardly early in the second quarter of the Regional Challenge match won by the Kangaroos, 13.16 (94) to 11.5 (71).

He was expected to have a scan last night to determine the seriousness of the injury.

In better news for the Roos, 19-year-old West Australian recruit Chad Jones made an auspicious debut last night.

Sydney, too, suffered a serious hamstring injury to defender Andrew Schauble.

Schauble's clumsy attempt to kick a rolling ball in the third term left him hobbling badly and he was on crutches after the match.

Swans coach Paul Roos ruefully predicted that Schauble could face a long stint on the sidelines.

Chad Jones was just shaded for best afield by his namesake Corey Jones, but coach Dean Laidley was impressed by the 196cm recruit who was picked up with the Roos second selection (No. 24 overall) in last year's national draft.

"I thought Chad Jones in his first game of AFL footy was particularly good," Laidley said.

"He probably added a bit of difference. He's tall but he's quick and agile . . . he's a bit different I suppose to Corey (McKernan), and Drew (Petrie) or (Leigh) Brownie who was up there (forward) at certain stages, and then Sav (Rocca) came on and did OK late in the third and fourth quarters, so we've certainly got some options up there."

Another fine aspect of Chad Jones' play, and one that would have endeared him to Laidley, is that he's prepared to run 15m or 20m to put on a shepherd to protect the ball carrier.

While the Roos had many scoring options, the Swans, without Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes, who was rested, and the injured Michael O'Loughlin (knee) and Adam Schneider (hamstring), languished in this department.

Barry Hall kicked three goals, two coming from snaps in the third quarter, and Paul Williams kicked two, but the scoreboard told the true story ? the Roos had 29 shots to 16 and should have won by much more.

The Roos also opted to rest Brent Harvey, Leigh Colbert and Mark Porter, while Daniel Wells will have a run today, according to Laidley.

"I reckon Brent Harvey's been our best player in the games we've played and we just wanted to rest his legs," Laidley said.

"Leigh Colbert has probably played in all the intra-club games and against Melbourne (in the opening round of the Wizard Cup).

As we saw towards the end of last year when he hurt himself and came back after missing eight weeks, he was in fantastic shape."
