NEAFL 2016 Round 5

Brisbane Lions Reserves v Sydney Swans Reserves

Sunday 1st May 2016
9.30am
Coorparoo

The strangeness of the NEAFL Draw has resulted in these two teams clashing again, less than a month ago the Swans demolished an unbalanced Lions side by a whopping 122 points. This contest looks like a complete mismatch on paper with the Swans flying high on top of the NEAFL as the only unbeaten side while the Lions by contrast are still winless and with a miserable 37.50% percentage are anchored to the bottom.

However after some returns by key players last week, the Lions narrowly went down to NEAFL powerhouses Aspley by only 3 points, and if they were a little more accurate could have, and should have won the game.

Changes
In: Rose, Jones, Rohan
Out: Aliir ALIIR (seniors), Kyle GALLOWAY (?)

Aliir's promotion to the seniors leaves the backline a little short against the Lions's tall forward. Marsh, Newman and/or Melican will have to play taller this week but coach Shaw has the added option of throwing the versatile Davis back there if required. Rohan could also be another option as a spare down back but he is unlikely to play all 4 quarters.

Naismith came on at quarter time last week and played as a forward only with no time in the ruck (and wasn't particularly effective in that role FWIW) . With Galloway and Aliir out of the team this week, he will should spend some time in the ruck this week as the back up to the in-form Nankervis.

Hebron has played forward so far this year and impressed, being named in the best players list in 2 of the 4 games. However, he has played in defence last year and could also be another option down back. McFadden spent time in the midfield against Southport while Reinhard was very quiet, only registering 1 disposal after his 6 goal performance against Redland.

4 from that bench will be named in their senior side, and Robertson has since been ruled out with illness. This leaves a total of 15 listed players.

The big change from the Round 1 team is the inclusion of Mathieson, a genuine inside midfielder who is on the comeback trail after being on the receiving end of a strong Jeremy Cameron bump that earned the GWS player a 4 week suspension. Another player to look out for is Eric Hipwood, a 202cm swingman who play at either end of the ground, but incredibly agile for his size.

Losing Keays, who's clearly been their best NEAFL player so far and possibly also losing McStay and Mayes who were both excellent last week against Aspley could result in a weaker side this week.

So this is the 3rd week running that Jordan Dawson doesn't make the team without any mention of why. I really wish the club would keep the supporters informed about what's going on with our players, rather than let us speculate the worst, e.g. Cam McCarthy syndrome.

I can understand that Tom Derickx is not up to senior selection, but why can't he even make the injury list?

A liltle side note, the no 56 top up, Billy Lambert for Brisbane is former Lions player and GWS official, now Lions offical, Craig Lamberts son. Billy played u/17's for Drummoyne in the local Sydney Junior Comp last year

Sunday teams: Top-ups back, Schache out - AFL.com.au (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-04-29/sunday-teams-round-six)

I think he's into the squad, but not the team. Whether or not he plays NEAFL, who knows.

The Lions have also chosen to "rest" Schache. Not sure whether resting means running around in the NEAFL, or means having an actual rest.

Unfortunately the forecast up here is for showers all the weekend. Though at 27 tomorrow, it will still be quite warm.
With O'Riordan, since he did well in the mud last week, I'd back him in to do well again this week.

On current ressies form, you could do both, by having him play at full forward, where he is unlikely to see much action.

9.30am seems like a very early start for a game of AFL one level down from the senior AFL competition.

Is the game played so early to allow the emergencies who played reserves to be available at the Gabba on time?

I arrived halfway through the first quarter in time to see Brisbane kick three consecutive goals - their only majors for the game! Light rain without let up throughout made it very difficult with the ball being very slippery and lots of scrimmages.

BJ got a lot of the ball but wasted it a lot. Towers did some nice things. Rohan looked to be playing half back and went nicely for a first hit out. Naismith for a very big man in wet conditions showed some good skills and good pace, be interested to hear from regular ressie watchers if he shows those in other games. O'Riordan looked right at home in the conditions, much like an Irish summer's day, and looks an impressive unit with neat foot disposal, we look to have a player there.

Then to the Gabba for the heartstopper, we have work to do after that display.

I don't understand why the Lions Reserves team is so poor. Like us, they can fill that side with senior listed players, rookie listed players and academy players. We have sub standard AFL players and younger players who fill the reserves side, but why are we 100 points better than Brisbane. Are our acedemy top ups so superior when compared to Brisbane's.

It's bewildering!

I've got serious doubts about Sam ever making it. He pranced around Drummoyne Oval like a ballerina last weekend and for mine he is just too slight in build to be a ruckman. He seriously needs to stack on at least 15kgs to that frame of his.

Couldn't agree more about O'Riordan, he looks to have all the tools to be an AFL player.

Towers is an interesting one as to his future. He's a quality bloke from what I can gather I reckon he'd be a good professional around the club. And if he's not too excessive with his salary demands then I could see us locking him in for at least a couple of years as a good squad player.

But would that suit Dean? I wouldn't think there'd be a huge line of suitors but I do think he'd be able to get more regular senior footy at a bottom six club like a Carlton or Brisbane and he wouldn't cost them much in terms of what they give up.

I suppose we will find out before long but it was not long ago that Sam was regularly smashing Rory Lobb in the ruck in the NEAFL. He does have talent and he is heavier than Lobb who is now regarded as a contested marking machine by some.

Currently though I think that Toby is our best second ruck and clearly better in the wet than Sinclair. Sam needs a few games to get fit.

Nothing has changed with Towers...We drafted him as a mature aged player because he looked great at VFL level....

He still looks great at VFL/NEAFL level...Unfortunately he's only shown 1 good game at AFL level in 2 years.

Can't see why the Swans would want to re-sign him on that form.

Towers is a list clogger at a bottom club and a depth player at a top club. Hes a bit like spranger. In which case if he left he needs to go to a good club otherwise his carear is doomed. Similarly, we should keep him.

Naismith is regarded by Taubert as the best tap ruckman at the club, and that included the time when Pyke was at the club last year. He already weighs 104kg according to the Swans website, not sure getting to 120 is the best option for him. In any case, if anything, I thought he was a bit careless last week at Drummoyne when he was trying to throw his weight around (playing exclusively forward) but was too clumsy and gave away quite a few free kicks.

Great pic! Sammy doesn't look too spindly there. I always felt he was in front of Toby (although Nank is a better kick) but hasn't been able to get his body right. I can also remember being impressed at his agility relative to his height when I've seen him in action. I wonder if Galloway will be able to put pressure on him or even surpass him down the track. They seem a good point of comparison because they're both so tall although obviously Galloway has a lot further to go. Haven't seen Galloway in action yet but hope to make it to Drummoyne this Saturday.

Fair call, but in the flesh he looked quite slightly built, I reckon he needs a good 10kgs extra.

Time will tell with this one but I'll trust Taubert's judgement over mine any day. All he probably needs is a run of games and some luck with injuries. I must say he had a very cute and very engaging blonde young lady as his personal cheer squad at Drummoyne the other week and if she is indeed his girlfriend he has done exceptionally well. As for Galloway I think he will be someone we pass on, four rucks on our list will be ample and he just looks too lumbering and un-coordinated for mine.

Can't believe they have changed the venue AGAIN but I may swing by BISP for a peep

I recall a rookie who was tall and gangly that clubs passed up in the draft. I think his.name was Sandilands IIRC.

I think we have 6 trucks. Tippett, Sinclair, Nankervis, Naismith, Galloway and TD.

So this is the 3rd week running that Jordan Dawson doesn't make the team without any mention of why. I really wish the club would keep the supporters informed about what's going on with our players, rather than let us speculate the worst, e.g. Cam McCarthy syndrome.

He is in the background of a photo of Gaz Rohan having a kick at training, and he's suited up. But maybe that's an old photo, who knows.

He did miss most of last year with a back complaint, maybe that has flared up again...All speculation of course...

You're right, the club should keep us informed.

Dawson has a calf injury, estimated return one week, listed on the injury list on Swans' website. (And Derickx an ankle injury, one week).

They've shifted the game yet again, it's now at Blacktown starting 11.30.

Bummer! Thanks for letting me know - first I've heard. Would still like to make it but not sure if I'll manage the much longer trip with kids in tow.

Is "CL' clearances or clangers? If it is clearances, nine to Jack is quite impressive. Indeed, his stats suggest his non-naming in the best half-a-dozen may be down to the tried and tested handicap system they seem to use in naming the best. 11 tackles and 10 inside 50s suggests he was very busy.

The relatively low differential between total disposals of the two teams, compared to the score differential, shows just how meaningless basic disposal totals are. Looks like the Lions were messing around with lots of disposals that didn't actually achieve much.
