Perfect day for footy here in Melbourne. Swans odds have shortened considerably as the game gets closer.
The interesting question is how will Roughie's news affect the Hawks? Welcome back Gary Rohan. Hawks by 10pts.

Tough to backup to MCG to weeks in a row. But on paper we have a good side while the dawks are missing a few.
Could go either way, but on our recent form, you'd have to favor the home team.
This will go a long way to determining if we are a top 4 side or not.

Agreed. This is a huge game. While we were unlucky last week we didnt deserve to win and my confidence for this has been sapped a bit in the last few rounds. I think this is a real test. Unfortunately I'm tipping the Hawks in a close one

I think we must win this game to make up for last week.
Looking at the way the other teams have improved there isn't many games left that we would be certainties to win.

Hard to guess how this one could pan out. Hawks are usually very motivated, I'm sure even more so tonight with the "do it for Roughy" factor. Swans should still be stinging after last week. Maybe those psychological factors cancel each other out!

Given previous recent outings I'll settle for close and competitive.

I see only two options here. I think the Swans have proved to be a bit soft with close games against weak teams like the Bombers and Lions - and then giving the game to the Tigers.

If we don't win tonight with the better team then I won't be planning any Melbourne trips in September.

Swans by 25.

It has been really hard to gauge where we are it so far this season.. I feel this game will answer a lot of questions. I hope we did n't bring back Gaz too soon. Not sure who else should have played though. As much as Towers infuriates me a part of me feels he should get a run of games to see if things can click for him. Make him or break him. Swans by 10.

Nicholls was god damn awful last week, absolutely crucified us and poor old Grundy.

Hawks couldn't be too worried or they would of called up their #1 ticket holder Stevic to be in the 3 :rofl

Yes, I must admit that I did look up the umpires, because I fully expected Stevic to be there. Don't really recall Nicholls annoying me too much last week and I think that the persecution of Reg was more a group effort, but Schmitt was shocking a few weeks ago at the Gabba.

Nicholls at it again after his awful efforts last week. Clear free to Tippett in the goal square, and a clear trip on Buddy as well.

So far so good but you get that feeling the Hawks will get on a roll at some stage, and we will need to grimly hang on. Some good footy interspersed with a lot of awful footy as well from both sides.

Love how Heeney goes about his footy - he really is a superb young player. Rohan having some impact as well, and Buddy is in fantastic form.

Come on Swans - keep it up in the 2nd half - Hawks are most definitely there for the taking tonight, but we have to play 4 good quarters of footy, not 2 or 3.

Nicholls said 'he was on the ground'. Yes he may have been, but that is no excuse for a clear trip. Imo should get cited for it, but no doubt he won't - made no attempt to actually tackle, just to kick out with his legs to trip.

The Hawks will definitely come at some point. I remember a game at the SCG 3 or 4 years ago. Swans were 7 goals up and my mate went to get beers. By the time he'd got back Hawks were level.

Something that's really annoying me is the way the commentators, from about 5 minutes in to the 1st quarter, have been saying the Hawks are looking "a bit flat" in an apparent reference to Roughy. Going out of their way to make excuses - whether or not that is the case. Just because they like that "Awwwhhh" factor, or think (or know) it rates.

Certainly wish Rough all the best. He is one of the less offensive Hawks.

Arrrgghhh what a frustrating quarter. Couldn't get hold of the ball at all, and very wasteful when we did. Not helped by some usual 'lets help Hawthorn along' umpiring in there as well - that last one was a killer, Hanners clearly marked it then up the other end for a goal.

Come on Swans, find a way to lift - a win tonight would be a huge boost, no matter how we get it.

- - - Updated - - -

Listen to those piece of @@@@ Hawthorn supporters booing when they don't get their previous free kicks.

That Sam Mitchell (aka the Twerp) is a dirty @@@@@. He hit Tommy off the ball. Can't stand their team of snipers.

Come on let's not fall asleep like last week. Need to be switched on from the bounce and need to stick our tackles.

Very good win tonight.

Rohan did some brilliant things, Hanners was good again and Mitchell did a great job on his sniper namesake. Rampe and Reg were huge at the back.

Good to see Hewett stand up when the going got tough as I have felt he's gone missing before but not today.

Mills had a torrid time out there against a classy opponent, perhaps too big a job at this stage of his career but he did some good things and never have up. Hard to believe the kid is a teenager.

Benny again showed how important he is for the team

And Buddy just gave us the touch of class we need at the end.

No real negatives for me except Ted's concussion which didn't look too bad but I'm glad we put his welfare first (as we always do), I could see us erring on the side of caution here and certainly perhaps wearing headgear for the rest of his career.

Jones seems more and more self assured as a senior footballer and I'd say he's not going to play much NEAFL going forward.

McVeigh was a bit of a concern but I just think he is feeling his way back into form but I'm sure the usual critics will be ion his case.

Hard to see how anyone can be dropped for next week really

It was great to see Kirk behind the players when they were singing the song. Back in the red and white where he belongs. Tom Mitchell was incredible, held Sam Mitchell to bugger all disposals and racked up 20 or so himself. Awesome stuff.

Re Buddy, its a little scary that opposition have to be actively thinking about where he is if a Swan has a mark 60-70m from goal. Bizarre that the biggest danger is behind rather than a lead up mark closer goal. He makes those goals look easy too. Truly a massive weapon to have.

mcs
20th May 2016, 11:45 PM
Lets hope that is the breakout game for Hewett - he is composed, creates space and time for himself, and can seriously use the ball. The guy can play, and he will hopefully take huge confidence from tonight. I've seen him rip it up at NEAFL level, and I think he can do it at AFL level as well.

Great to have Rohan back. Didn't get much of the ball, but you can see the difference having that extra quicker player up forward in the team can make. Needs to find more of the footy, but can make a real difference for us.

Our back 6 were superb tonight, even after the early loss of Teddy. Grundy was immense - a good recovery after a poor game last week (or just a reversion to his superb form for most of the season), Rampe was great and Mills continues to develop.

Lloyd continues to grow as a player as well - he played well tonight, which was something he needed to do in a big game. Harry C is beginning to find more of the ball as well, and finally getting a harder edge to his footy - I liked a lot of his work tonight!

Kudos also to Mitchell - did a superb job on the grub, and won that contest very well, a big win and a string to his bow we haven't seen so much of it. A really good performance and really shut the grub out of the game.

Finally Tippo - much maligned by so many but did his role to the absolute 't' tonight - a superb game.

Oh and yeh there is that guy called Buddy - words don't describe what he can do when he is in form like this. He doesn't need to be in the game all night when he can pull out what he did late in the game. He is the key to our Premiership aspirations - if he is fit and firing, even if as a whole we don't play well, we can find ways to win the close ones!

Cheer Cheer - just what the doctor ordered after last week's meek surrender!

- - - Updated - - -

How much of an influence has Brett Kirk had? He was the heart and soul of the Swans when he was a player

Absolutely - it is really becoming clear that he is doing more than his fair share in reinjecting some 'bloods' culture back into our club - after what could have been terminal damage at the end of 2014. So great to have him back at the club!

Sinclair is doing a lot right. If his hands stop letting him down and he starts clunking some marks again, he will be more than playing his role. It is reassuring he is getting in the right positions, and he can lay a tackle too. I like him and think he will be a solid servant for us.

People won't like this, but Ted going out gave our defence more speed and agility that matched up better on what the Hawks provided. He will have a match up next week as North have Petrie, Waite and Brown.

Mills has excellent closing speed for a defender and ended up matched up on Gunston a couple of times. He came through that baptism very well.

Hewitt has class, time and poise. Delivered well by foot.

Rohan showed why he will never be given up on. Great come back game.

Tippett was pivotal and Rampe must now be in all Australian contention.

Rohan - Great marking on the lead, or kick over the back and turn it to a race.
Hewett - This why you need real footy players, smart, great decisions and disposals
Buddy - just being buddy
Mills - on Gunston, great lesson, but give it everything and brave and will play 250 games.
Heeney - just a gun, would we needed.
Smooch - Blanketed Rioli and no Bruce stroking himself
Laidler - This is why he plays every game, courageously every contest
Ramps & Reg - just great, nothing more
Tippett - A grader, as Ruck and killed them and good forward
Hannebery -our heart and soul
JPK - Covered Mitchell with Titch and a warrior
Titch - mitchell beat him early but after q1 just 4 more possessions
Parker - got it alot but made no impact
Lloyd - played as our link man, solid game.
Sinclair - just needs to toughen up, weak efforts, and take your marks
Benny - great as small forward but decisons in the mids will always with problems
Kizza and Macca - just fair games and some dodgy skills and I not think they will ever dominate their men or games.
Jones - some very good a little bad and couple of ugly. Just one free and 4 tackles. Maybe needs to play as tagger or in mids and cracking at the ball.
Harry - got 19 posssies but can't tell what he did. I think he was playing similar to Lloyd.

Great win all round from the boys tonight! The umpiring was horrible (for both sides) and with Ted missing for three qtrs the backline really held up. Buddy stood up when it mattered and Joey showed how important an out he was for us last week with his inside work. I'm still not sold on Z. Jones though people! He was missing in the first half and while admittedly better in the 2nd half, I'm not sure that we wouldn't be a better team with either Harry Marsh or Nic Newman back there. Hard to change a winning formula though so we'll see!

Father time is just catching up with Ted, it happens to us all but I do think we will resist the temptation, and I hope he does too, to go on one year too far.

Agree re Rohan. I have a bad habit of under-rating players who have been out injured (I was a bit negative on McGlynn too) but that was a brilliant breakout game. I tend to see him a rebounding half back flanker but with his speed you'd have to consider him up forward with Heeney and Buddy.

Rampe is definitely in AA form, his development is nothing short of amazing. Agree re Tippett too, he is an absolute workhorse and he contributed on the scoreboard too.

Hewett is still young and I expect he will still continue to drift a bit in and out of games for the next year or so but there is something there that is quality. I think it is his composure more than anything, can see him being a 10 year player for us

He's already the Bondi billionaire

It always puzzles me how Eddy "Chins" McGuire refers to Buddy as the Bondi Billionaire, when Chins himself is pulling in an absolute mint. That man makes me sick to my stomach. A blight on the game for sure. But I digress...

Great game from the Swans tonight, a much needed palate cleanser after last weeks effort. So many contributors. But can we beat North next week at home?

That was terrific wasn't it. I'll take wins like that every day of the week. Great effort from lots of players.

When did Ling turn into such a Hawks fanboy? Too much time hanging around with the others.

I'm sure you have the exact numbers, but wasn't his first two years under the 1.1 mark for salary cap purposes. It's propably 1.2 or 1.3 a year from here until the end of his contract.

It's a staggered deal. You can google the exact details. I think years 1 and 2 were $800K and then this year and next he is about $1.2 a year. He spikes at $1.8m a year in years 5 and 6 I think and then tails off at the end a bit for the last three years.

A calculated gamble on the salary cap going north which it certainly will, we just don't know by how much

Saw a real footballer who came of age tonight who is just going to add to our midfield depth - Hewett. Watch him closely, just slicesc through traffic and composed, he is going to be a very good player.

Also want those idiots who wanted to drop Reg to put their hands up and hang their heads - idiots!

Harry - got 19 posssies but can't tell what he did. I think he was playing similar to Lloyd.

Harry is gradually finding his spot in the team. He isnt a player that ever is going to light up the highlights but he is ever improving.

As for nick smith - he is such a great contraceptive pill for bruce and cyrils ongoing love in! He was superb on him when cyril went up forward

Here you go. Without putting his contract in front of you, will this do?

Father time is just catching up with Ted, it happens to us all but I do think we will resist the temptation, and I hope he does too, to go on one year too far.

Mug, as an avid viewer of the Sydney AFL scene, did Rampe destroy the amature players during his 2012 season with UNSW?

Seems like he is a brilliant athlete at AFL level. He would have been Usain Bolt at Sydney AFL level.

Our 25 and under midfield. Hanners Mitchell Parker Mills Hewett Heeney. Oh boy. Also thought Harry did some hard work tonight

Reading that all those players are under 25 makes me so happy. Seems like we have a very bright future without even considering bottoming out. Good times to be a Swans supporter

At least one of Reg and Rampe deserve Brownlow votes tonight, if not both. If neither get any it'd be a travesty of the highest order.

A great effort from both of them tonight.

Rampe not Reg. Rampe would have to be in our top 5 players

Agree. We saw the arrival of Hewett tonight. A serious young player.

Rampe is seriously impressive at the moment. Thought he was our best defender last year and has only proved it this year.

The guys who cost us our COLA and the trading restrictions, Tippo and Buddy, are showing that it was all worth it. And the academy draft revisions - Heeney - worth it. They've been fantastic all year.

Hewett finally shows why I've been singing his praises since he walked through the door. Jake Lloyd has bounced back strongly after a couple of sluggish games.

Only negative for me was Sinclair. If he can't improve his marking he'll drop down to our last ruck option fairly quickly. Naismith and Nankervis can both ruck, mark the ball well and kick goals.

We still have work to do on our centre clearances and need to move the ball much faster out of defense. There were plenty of times we held the ball in our defense with players were running into open space only to kick the ball to a contest.
