NEAFL 2017 Round 4

Sydney Swans Reserves v Giants @ Sydney Cricket Ground

Saturday 22nd April 2017
3:45pm
Sydney Cricket Ground

The much-awaited NEAFL GF rematch between the cross town rivals sees a weakened Giants outfit make their way east to tackle a strong-looking Swans lineup. Due to an extensive injury list the Giants will only be able to field 11 listed players (plus their player welfare manager in ex-AFL player Dylan Addison) which pales into comparison with the 16 listed players who will run out in the red and white.

The Giants lost many listed players over the trade/draft period who were prominent members of their successful team last year - Jack Steele, Jake Barrett, Rhys Palmer, James Stewart were all key players in their 2016 NEAFL team.

Changes
In: Aliir, Dawson, Florent, Newman
Out: Harry CUNNINGHAM (seniors), Tyrone LEONARDIS (?), Lewis MELICAN (seniors)

Cameron shouldered the ruckload for the last NEAFL game against Southport and he will take the majority of the workload again for this game. Aliir has been used sparingly in the ruck in the past and could be Cameron's backup.

Aliir should be a straight swap for Melican in the backline which maintains a strong core with Aliir joining Talia, Maibaum, Laidler and Newman and O'Riordan in the defensive 6.

Florent and Dawson will receive extensive midfield minutes upon their demotion from the seniors, but the Swans have plenty of midfield options including Towers, Jack, Fisher and Rose.

Simpson will provide a challenging for Cameron in the ruck. He currently leads the NEAFL in hitouts with 49.0 per game across his 3 games.

Onballers Lloyd and Perryman (Pick 14 in last year's draft) have also began the season well, averaging 30.5 disposals 4.5 marks 6.0 tackles and 26.3 disposals 4.7 marks 6.7 tackles respectively.

Athletic forward Zach Sproule leads the NEAFL goalkicking ladder with 11 including 2 bags of 5 goals in the opening 2 rounds. He is well supported by giant ruck-forward Flynn (4 goals) and athletic half-forward Tiziani (4 goals)

Fabulous work as usual Ugg. A strong looking backline, and might I say I'm looking forward to seeing Melican in the seniors, his last 4-5 games going back into last years GF have been very good.

Want O'Riordan to continue his progress, was very impressive last year and just the type of player we need. Newman unlucky IMO to be dropped.

Is Ronke out for the season with a yet to be disclosed injury?

Darcy Cameron should see a surgeon and have that enormous football removed from his shoulder. It should definitely improve his chances for selection. I'm surprised Doc WhatsHisName hasn't noticed that yet.

He was running laps at training on Tuesday and looked in good shape. Presumably he's on the way back from an injury but looks like he'll resume training with the main group soon enough. He has a nice build - already looks fairly strong in the upper body.

For the past few years, it's been common practice for the Swans webiste not to list our fringe players on the injury list, at least for the first few weeks that the injury has occurred.

Fox's reason for omission from the senior listed as knee yet he's not on the injury list. Leonardis is out this week with what one must assume is an injury and yet he's not on this week's injury list. Ronke hasn't taken part in the 2 opening NEAFL games yet there's been no mention of him in the injury report

Having to play Dylan Addison is pretty sad for the GWS Academy kids. I guess it reflects the fact that most of them are in the Riverina. They could always ask the swans academy for some top up like the Brisbane Lions did last year!

Ludwig

I'm disappointed that the club doesn't say much about the so called fringe players, because the tragics like those on RWO are keen to know what's happening with them. They could at least put them on the injury list if they're not playing.

I've been looking forward to seeing Ronke play. Would have been a good week for him to get a game since the NEAFL is streaming our game this week. Fox has gotten the games this year for those coming off the rookie list, but it's Fisher and Ronke that I think have the best chance of making a good AFL career. We've picked a few winners with that 1st round rookie draft pick in Nick Smith, Biggs and Lloyd. I think Ronke could add to that list.

I look forward to seeing the game tomorrow, and it is so much better to have Ugg's analysis before hand.

I know over the years those with knowledge far surpassing mine have commented on the "votes", but after 2 rounds the up-and-comers have (mostly) caught the coaches eye.

B Jack 12, but then Fisher and Maibaum 5 each and Dawson with 4 from 1 game.

Poor Leonardis! You know things aren't going well for your AFL career when you get dropped from the NEAFL side. ;-)

Also won't Maze, rather than Aliir, be the second ruck?

Looks like we have no excuses for not taking them to the cleaners. The Giants ' AFL level depth may be incomparable but injuries and defections (as concessions have ended) have put a serious dent in the depth of the Giants' NEAFL team.

florent has been quiet but that was some clever work to give Pink a goal close to the half time hooter.

Ludwig

Towers is the Designated Emergency. He's taken over the mantle from Tom Derickx. It's one of the most important roles at the club. It's given to the player who cannot improve no matter how many reserves games he plays, so you let the other emergencies, who can improve play in the reserves' game, and Towers hangs around just in case someone pulls up sore in the warm up.

Newman is way too good for this level of footy. Has to be in the senior side. Rose has been looking sharp this year. He should get a chance in the seniors soon. Agree with Liz' earlier comments about Edwards' kicking, but he did kick a monster goal and I like a lot of the other things he does.

I liked what I saw of Pink and Maze. Good ball use, hard working.

Mixed output from Rose, Dawson, Aliir. I agree AA still too loose defensively but is great with ball in hand. Rose did some good stuff but I also noticed a few lapses in concentration, especially defensively, where he let his man get away from him at times. He also allowed himself to be run down while carrying the ball.

Newman was solid, I thought. Does a lot right and works hard.

Watched the last three quarters.

Edwards looked imposing every time he touched it, quick first few steps and evasive. Sometimes wonky disposal, but also did some good things.

Florent was a little disappointing; I was hoping he'd find a bit more of it, but he didn't. Certainly classy (and quick) but I think he's got a decent NEAFL apprenticeship ahead of him.

I thought Aliir looked better as the game went on, but Giants didn't kick well into the forward 50. Talia was OK, Maibaum looks and plays rugged.

I like Rose, took some good marks inside forward 50, but still gets caught with it and turns it over from time to time.

O'Riordan's speed and hardness are senior standard. I like Pink, he's quick for a big man and smart.

jono2707

Here's a few notes I took - watched the whole game:
Jack butchers the ball too often.
Sam Murray looks classy
Rose attacking well
Talia looks reasonably composed
I reckon a few weeks back in the 2s won't hurt aliir . Or Florent.
Maze is a big unit but will need a few years of work - looks a likely shot for a rookie spot next year though.

Edwards seemed to be the on field leader and whilst not always polished, he was heavily involved in plenty of attacking forays. Good pace too.

Maibaum looks worthy of development. A hardy key back.

O'Riordan isn't far off at all and could well slot into the seniors for a few games this year. He looks more comfortable out there and physically he looks like an AFL player.

We had some really nice looking attack particularly in the second half - plenty of run through the middle and link up handballs. Not always perfect but looked good and I think reflects how the seniors will look to play once they get into gear (which will hopefully be tonight).

It was great to see AJ doing the running with Robbo. There both lovely blokes with positive energy. But I confess I didn't like what I saw of AJ's movement. He's not exactly running like a gazelle. Looks a little awkward through the hips and a little laboured. Hopefully this is insignificant or just wrong on my part and doesn't speak to his prospects of making it back to the AFL.

The clubs Best Players for reserves games almost always is at odds with what supporters and often stats show. Not sure why but it's the reason we all wait for the ressie watchers reports - to see who really did play well.

Free kicks 14-28 against us versus 26-17 for us in the AFL. Are the umpires trying to even up the contests? Can't ignore BJ's stats, at least he gets plenty of it even if he butchers it. That would at least be a start in the firsts. Cameron did not do a lot in his three quarters. Maybe not enough to replace Sinclair who does need replacing. Hard to judge as UWS had so many toppies but there is scope for four or five changes against Carlton.

I agree with all you say. Especially about Toby pink. he is a really good player in the making. boy is he gonna be something when he builds up. he is so composed and can hit a target. His goal kicking is pretty good too. Manages to get into open space because he works so hard.

Every time BJ actually manages to hit a player the players get around him. He does it so little. Of his 35 I reckon he managed to hit the player 1/3 of the time. Well under 50% were to advantage. If he ever manages to tidy that up he might be a good player. But until then he is a NEAFL player. Cameron didn't really have three quarters. He seemed to spend long periods on the pine even when he was playing. I'd say he only played way less than half the 120 minutes. i'd say about 45 minutes.

The players who impressed me were;

Murray, Edwards, Newman, O'Riordan, Talia, Aliir (second half only), Pink, Rose, Fisher, Laidler, Dawson. Of those only Newman, Talia, Aliir, Laidler, Rose & Dawson can be picked unless we put one of the seniors on the long term injury list. Maybe time for Hannas to have his knee scraping. Kizza, Foote & Smithy reg too I reckon) to go to the reserves to get form. Give this year a miss we aren't going to make it anyway because the coaches have no idea how to stop the holding on Parker and Kennedy and the umpies are not going to penalise the opposition. What's more all our set ups are old and tired and Horse has no new plan. Don't know what the coaches did in the off season but I don't think they even bothered with strategy. someone said bring in Shaw to coach. To tell the truth you could dofar worse. he seems to have an idea what turns a game on it's head. UWS were getting on top in the third quarter and Rhyce changed a few match ups, got players to release to the opposite side and the game turned back. Very good. Horse can't seem to do the same. Shaw also had the runner out to Aliir to tell him he was standing too far off his opponent because after that Aliir was much tighter.

If we want to beat the teams who berat us up maybe we could get a few of their assistants. Henry & Stewie have probably been here a bit too long. Time for a change.

I just noticed that Darcy Baron-Hay has got this week's NEAFL Rising Star nomination, playing for Sydney Uni. Good for him and I hope that he keeps improving, as I suspect that he's still on the Swans' radar.

That's more like it wolftone! You're getting with the program. :p Things are not so dire we need to turf our highly impressive senior coach (I realise you wouldn't go that far yourself). Just an injection of fresh ideas and modern thinking. I reckon Scott Camporeale would be a great get but can't see him being lured to Sydney. You got any better suggestions?
