Dees coming off their third six day break and a trip to the west with many injuries. Swans by 37. Go Swannies!

707
30th June 2017, 11:25 AM
Dees are depleted and we are very close to best 22 on the park, if we are serious with ourselves, we should win this without a close finish drama.

Stakes have rarely been higher given our precarious ladder position, this is a BIG 8 point game, no excuses, just need a fair run with umpires, I'll spew if they pluck out pathetic in front of goal frees for the Dees like they have against us in the last couple of games.

Win, win well then focus onto Manuka tomorrow.

It is a tough prospect from so far back to keep the hype and intensity in check for the rest of the season. With this game (due to injury, etc.) there is also the weight of expectation. Melbourne have been playing very well and it will still be our best fielded 22 against their best fielded 22, I just hope we can gain command early and maintain it throughout the match.

It has been such a strange season in terms of predicting results, particularly if you said in a game that is 5 v 10 on the ladder that 10 would be the favourite. Fingers crossed - go Bloods!

Hawthorn were depleted too when we played them, so wariness is an ongoing mindset for me.

Swans by 3. Gary Rohan kicks the final goal with 12 seconds left on the clock just to mess with our heads and hearts.

The Demons may be depleted, but they are in great form and have great belief....

This will be a real test for the Swannies.

Beautiful day here in Melbourne (for the moment, anyway). No rain forecast for tonight either. Hoping the boys can bring the manic pressure with Buddy kicking a bag after last weeks woes!

Watching my kids play hockey early but should be there soon after quarter time.

Alas, the game will be over by then.

No rain forecast, but it will be the coldest night of the year so far in Melbourne. It's getting down to 1 degree or so with some suburbs forecast to go below zero and widespread frosts. Bring scarves and beanies and rug up.

Yet we are left a player down for the night because of a thuggish action. If there was ever an example of where there should be a send off rule in the AFL, this is it.

WE are so wasteful with our kicking so far - we should be 5 goals + in front at the moment.

That was a low act by Bugg ... if he doesn't get at least 4 weeks the AFL has gone soft.

What do we have to do to get a goal? Seven behinds is not good football.

Totally agree.

In rugby league, in rugby union, in soccer - every game that is a clear violent action where the player is sent off. The Umpire clearly saw it - it should be exactly the same in our great game. Instead of us getting at least not disadvantaged by being down a player, we now have one very good player out of the game, and the thug that dishes it out can keep playing..... absolute nonsense.

They've had 2 shots both goals and we are 7 behinds. Make that 3 goals.

We are being undisciplined giving away frees when we have the ball.

Bugg is a dirty sniper. He has been doing it since GWS days. It's unfair that Mills is out of the game while he can keep playing.

Finally we kick a goal! Those misses better not cost us.

Bugg has spent his whole career doing dog acts so no leniency from the Tribunal, and that folks is behind play, high impact, high contact, deliberate 5-6 weeks.

This will cost us the game, a thug act will cost us this game, maybe our season. One of our most important players misses the whole game and we are down to three on the bench.

Hope Mills doesn't take the inevitable apology call from Bugg.

I agree, the AFL really should give umpires the power to eject players from the game for acts of blatant thuggery, and the player cannot be replaced on field for 20 minutes at least.

I'm quite sure this will be discussed in the media.

Roos on Fox talks about the AFL sending officials the take players off after a bashing. This is now a big issue because there is no sub rule and the rules around concussion have tightened. The weird thing is that I distinctly remember Roosy advocating the sub rule before it came in. Says he is against it now. WTF? Can the AFL think anything through before it becomes a problem. They are strategically bereft.

If we tire and lose it will be entirely because of Buggs thuggery.

The intelligent Fox commentators suggesting 5-6 and that it must be stamped out, this is worse than Houli's and unlike Houli, Bugg is no saint. AFL won't be happy, two big suspensions in consecutive weeks.

Quality AFL umpiring...

Yep only negative for the game. Even Towers played really well. McVeigh and Jack had been questioned but played great. Hanneberry's quite game a massive positive.

Florent needs some consistency in the twos. Hope Dawson can get a run soon

Great result.

Hopefully tonight will shut the McVeigh haters up for a while - 96 ranking points, most when the game was to be won and lost.

Parker and Buddy immense, the entire backline (Rampe McVeigh and Newman especially).

Thought Towers did quite well. Maybe next week for Dawson for Olly who tried hard but could do with a spell in the twos.

Minimum 6 weeks for Bugg.

8-7 if we beat the Suns and then go hunting GWS

Great win. Dominated all night. I can't believe we've kicked so inaccurately the last two weeks and got the two wins.

I really think the one ruck strategy must stay. With Mills going down early we would've struggled to run out the game like we did with Sinclair taking up a lot of time on the ground.

Blue Sun

Hope Jones doesn't get another week for that bump.

Great win tonight. So proud of this team. Definitely something special.

McVeigh showed us why he's still in our best 22. Just smart plays. In and around the contest, keeps his cool and gets clean handballs or kicks out. Him and Rampe are important pillars down back.

Think it will be Hayward for Florent. The one ruck strategy was a success I don't know if it was a one off tactical special, given that Demons only have Gawn or Horse&Co will keep it up. I'd rather have Towers as 22nd man than Sinkers. Not sure what happens when / if Tippo gets his mojo back?

Early on Rampe was so vital. He cut off everything and saved the day often.

Rampe was aided early that he played on an electric but not physically imposing tall player in Jayden Hunt.

I would like to see the Swans being in another key defender like AA, so that Rampe does not have to play on a tallish player. In essence he can become the 4th back tall. He looks like he can give more attacking drive and cover for other players when not burdened by playing on a tall player.

There is no way Melican can be dropped. He is so consistent and has great speed, good marking ability and a good kick.

How AFL clubs let Melican get to the rookie draft is anyone's guess.

So there's a likely toll after last night, Mills may not be risked next week, Jones fractured cheekbone/MRP.

Melbourne toll too, Bugg 5+ weeks, Viney has one of those nasty foot ligament thingy's so that may be two more long term to a final 8 rival.

Dawson just a corkie so must be in contention next week and a great chance for someone to light up the ressies today and put their name forward.

Melican looks a find, plucked out in the 50s from memory in the Rookie Draft. To answer Club 80 query, Melican could hardly get a game for the Geelong Falcons U18 because of high profile KPBs, St.Kilda's Goddard one of them I think? His parents were surprised we wanted to draft him according to reports at the time. He was a very young draftee as well.

Against my pre game thoughts, McVeigh was very good, cool head, good foot skills, is a general. Reg excellent again, Melican and Newman have bolstered our defence this year, Rohan good, Buddy damaging, Parker immense he's back!

No reason we can't go deep this year, one game at a time, once we are ahead of the ledger the 0-6 start is irrelevent, we are the form team right now and IMO have a better team than last year plus we are building a little depth. All good!

I was sitting up in Melbourne members stand area with a friend who is a Demons supporter. Suffice to say Melbourne supporters were not a happy lot. It was great to see the large number of Swans supporters down the Swans cheer squad end. Even my Demons friends were impressed. Well done you lot - gave the Swans players a great accolade as they left the field at the end.

I was sitting down that end where it was almost all red and white. The players are genuinely thrilled by the reception they get in Melbourne, especially at the end of the game.

All good!

I agree with all of that, particularly your conclusion. Jack and Rampe's best games of the year, too.

Hi 707
Loved your positive post
Just wondering if you can do a comparison of last years team to this years team to clarify that we are a better team

Reid for Richards
Melican for Laidler
Hayward for McGlynn

Papley, Hewett, Lloyd, Jones have developed.

Mitchell out for Towers or Florent a diminution, but means Heeney plays in the middle and more speed out wide.

As much as Papley's bump into Bugg after the Mills incident was a bit silly and we lost the ball because of his action, I absolutely love him for it. We need players to stand up to that sort of thing with a bit a passion.

He ripped his shirt (which essentially branded him as the pariah that he is) and then put him on his backside - well done Paps.

Got to admit I was wrong. Macca was sensational. i was very worried after watching the reserves game again about his lack of pace. Sure that was a factor a couple of times but not too much because he didn't do much chasing. He generally drew the ball and used his unique skill set to beat his opponent to the ball and dodge and weave his way out of trouble. he combined very well with Lloyd, Jones, Newman and the other backs to provide a very strong close knit back half. Melican was good and better for having the 'old fella' there. macca gave him instruction a couple of times as to where to position himself and it worked soooo well.

Bad Points; Our kicking for goal. Efficiency inside 50. That's it.
Mills KO.

Deliberate Out Of Bounds. What a joke. The way the umpires let opposition players throw the ball or just drop it down but if we do it we get penalised.

Good Points; We won contested possession by so much I think Simon Goodwin would be embarrassed. They had a few out and if we kicked straight we would have won by 60 points or more.

Form of Macca.

The way our blokes are playing for each other. Sam Naismith was fantastic last night. He hurt them both physically and by what he did in play. His tap work was sensational and he managed to impact the play around the ground. He was also the first one to stand up for Mills. Good on you Sam. By the way our young blokes have plenty of mongrel.

That goal Buddy kicked. Ok he kicks those pretty often and my nephew would say par for the course. But gee those shots don't get any less wonderful.

Luke Parker. Back to his best. Some of his marks and moves were just unreal. he demolished the Dees.

Our team, this was a full team effort. Plugger needs to give our forwards a kick in the proverbial. But at least they had the opportunity to have plenty of shots due to our incredible mids. Good on Georgie boy for his wonderful game. Towers did some really good work.

The goal kicking or lack there of, doesn't worry me so much.
It happens, and imagine when it comes good. :)

McVeigh was in top form.
Interesting how well the back line worked without Mills down there.
Could be a blessing in disguise in that if we have a strong back 6 in (mainly Rampe, but also Grundy and the other 'staples') then Mills should be made more free at times to play up the ground, which is where he is supposed to be by all accounts.

Rohan was terrific all night

+ 1 His best game since the prelim against the Shinboners in 2014 (which he played from half back rather than up the ground). His pressure game was terrific with consistent second and third efforts. If he had kicked straightand he usually doeshe would have been in top 5 on ground. The forward set up looked very good: Buddy staying down when Reid jumped, rather than spoiling each other. O Flo not there, so Hayward in for him next week if fit. I also though the one ruckman strategy paid off; against the Dons there were too many passages when Naismith and Sinclair were both on the ground lumbering around the midfield. I think that we sometimes forget that Naismith has only played 22 games! We also need to note Kizza's great game last night. Brilliant tackling and some neat kicks. Really impressive game across the park (except for kicking), and it feels like there is some good depth in the list now, particularly in the back half: Aliir, Marsh, the forgotten Laidler and Talia and, dare I say, AJ, across the back. I wonder how/whether Tippett will be able to break into the team at all: the team seems better balanced without the extra big. And I suspect that the Foote experiment might be over.

The Mills incident and inaccurate kicking aside what a great match!!!

The 2 players I was extremely happy with last night were;

Naismith. Up against possibly the best Ruckman in the league by himself and matched him in just about all categories. Almost equal hitouts and disposals. Changes the dynamic for the team, we now know playing one ruckman isn't the end of the world (as long as its a fit Naismith) and we don't need to carry another into each game that has no impact around the ground or the forward line. I'd be happy for Tippett to come in playing forward after a few good games in the Ressies but Sinclair is depth only as far as I'm concerned.

Jack. Back at his best. I thought he would struggle for the rest of the year and that he may well retire at seasons end due to his body. Looks like he is fit again and his impact really makes us a better team.

Well coached by Longmire to allow Naismith to play a kick behind the play when the ball was in Swans attacking 50m. This meant that Naismith got a rest and Gawn got more fatigued and had to cover more ground. Parker was ok in ruck duels against Gawn in the attacking 50m.

Reid at CHF and saving games in the backline
Newman adds more class down back
Melican an adequate replacement for Ted
Hayward a gun in the making (doesn't turn 19 until after the season) for McGlynn
The improvement from a number of younger players, Lloyd, Jones, Papley etc and (now) return to form of older players like KJack & McVeigh
The development of more depth
Mitchell the only loss but has allowed a better midfield mix with Heeney, Papley and Jones in there more

Head to head 2016 to 2017, we are a better side now, it's why we are now on a winning streak similar to last year. Make no mistake, plenty of the top 8 teams are not happy to see us back in form again.

Newman has such great balance. After each marking contest seems to read the ball drop and keeps his feet.

Going to be a gun

Got to admit I was wrong. Macca was sensational.I agree on both counts. I thought he was past it (but figured that he must direct others well etc, because I do not think that the Swans (or any club) are overly sentimental) but he was excellent last night.
