MOUNTAIN LIONS MAUL MUDGEE

The Katoomba Lithgow Mountain Lions Australian Football side recorded an impressive victory in their first completed game since forming last September.

The Mountain Lions defeated the Mudgee Black Swans by 107 points, kicking 19 goals and 19 behinds to Mudgee?s 3 goals 8 at Browntown Oval Mount Victoria last Saturday.

Conditions were warmer and dryer than the Mountain Lions hit out against Charles Sturt University the fortnight previously. That game was called off early in the third quarter due to threatening lightning.

In a turnaround from their previous performance the Mountain Lions got out of the blocks early with a number of opportunities on goal early in the first term. Charlie Body was once again everywhere in the midfield with ruckman Ben Howard again dominating the centre bounces. The Mountain Lions gained a definite ascendancy across the field with close man-on-man marking and a strong physical game being a feature of a solid team effort.

Recent recruits Sean Muir and Steve Cutler made an impact as did goal kicking sensation Matt Hill, who racked up five majors for the afternoon.

Down back Garry Flaherty showed the entertaining skills that he has brought over from his years of experience with Gaelic Football, while Brent Kelly and Scott Simcoe provided plenty of leadership.

Best On Ground for the Mountain Lions was young Davin Stritch; the red headed number 7 took some great marks and was everywhere in the midfield, giving the Mountain Lions plenty of drive going forward, and hustling the Mudgee midfielders in defence.

Despite leading at every break the Mountain Lions never let up the pressure and played the game out to the end.

To their credit the Mudgee side, which was missing many of its first grade players, battled hard all day and never gave up, pressuring the Mountain Lions defence until the final siren.

After the match both sides retired to the Lithgow Hotel, who are one of the many local businesses supporting the Mountain Lions in their inaugural year. The points for the Digger Riddell trophy, which is named after the Lithgow Bombers stalwart, are awarded each week on a 3-2-1 basis, with the player with the highest number of votes receiving the trophy at the end of the year. This week three points went to Davin Stritch, two to Ben Howard and one to Charlie Body. The tally after two games is Body (4) Stritch (3) Howard (2) Cutler (2) Muir (1).

Leading goalkickers after two games are Hill (7) Howard (5) and Muir and Body (3).

Next week the Mountain Lions travel to Dubbo to be a part of the ten team Central West Australian Football League Lightning Premiership, with games starting on Friday night and the Final being held on Saturday night following the CWAFL season launch.

AUSKICKERS AT AUSSIE STADIUM

On Saturday evening the Upper Mountains Auskick Junior AFL players were a part of the action at stadium Australia, where they featured in Auskick games played as part of the Sydney v Carlton match. The young Auskickers meet every Saturday at 10am at Katoomba Falls Reserve.
