The Katoomba Lithgow Mountain Lions played their first game at their new home ground at the Katoomba Falls reserve last Saturday and played well in the foirst half before a lack of discipline saw the game drift from their grasp with Bathurst Eagles eventually running out winners by 68 points.

The good crowd was on hand in good footballing weather enjoyed the tight display by the Mountain Lions in the first half. Once again Ben Howard dominated the rucks and the side battled well in the first half to be within a straight kick by half time. Body and Cutler continued their strong form while newcomer Dave Bridgeland contributed with a goal. Sean Muir was also strong across the centre.

With mentor and coach Gordon McDermott withdrawing from the club due to personal reasons Brent Kelly took the reigns and lead by example by being everywhere in defence.

Unfortunately the tiring Mountain Lions incurred the wrath of the umpire on the several occasions in the second half and allowed the smaller but quicker Bathurst side to use open space more effectively. Even so there were many positive signs for the Lions who are learning from each game they play and continue to remain competitive at the CWAFL level.

The curtain raiser saw an inexperienced Katoomba-Lithgow under 17?s side battle back from a nine goal deficit at quarter time to put in a strong and creditable performance for the remaining three quarters. Stephen Pascoe and Andrew Dodds showed great ability and hopefully will be available for future Mountain Lions games.

The club now has a three week break before they face Parkes in Bathurst on May 10 but the Mountain Lions will be continuing their training - Tuesday nights at Katoomba Falls Reserve and Wednesday nights at Lithgow (from April 23) with both sessions starting at 6pm.

The Mountain Lions would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all those who assisted last Saturday and would like to encourage anyone interested in helping out around the club, playing or simply being a supporter to contact the club secretary on 0415 463 585.
