    Swans Overwhelm Bulldogs

SWANS v BULLDOGS - MATCH REPORT
    Cliff Hammond - 15 June 2003

Another fighting second half performance from the Swans saw them overwhelm the undermanned Bulldogs by 64 points on Saturday night. The Swans trailed by eight points at half-time, but kicked 12 goals to one in the second half, limiting the Bulldogs to just three behinds in the final period.

The Bulldogs, winless since round one, were more than competitive in a closely contested first half, but ran out of legs and fit players after the long break. It was the sixth time in the past eight rounds that Sydney had had at least 10 goalkickers, as the Swans virtually guaranteed themselves a place in the finals with this 19.13 (127) to 9.9 (63) win.

Michael O'Loughlin got Sydney off to the perfect start with a mark and goal inside the first minute and Ryan O'Keefe quickly added a second major. The Bulldogs retaliated by kicking five of the next six goals. Up by 12 points at the first break, the Bulldogs increased their lead to 19 in the second term, but Sydney took control of proceedings from that point.

Barry Hall dominated the forward line with a best on ground performance of 22 possessions, 10 marks and six goals. Jude Bolton was also outstanding with a game-high 29 disposals. The Swans had winners all over the ground, with Tadhg Kennelly and Leo Barry continually running the ball from half-back, and Brett Kirk and Jared Crouch nullifying the Bulldogs' champions Scott West and Nathan Brown.

The Bulldogs lost Steven Kretiuk and Wayde Skipper to injury in the second quarter, and Brian Harris in the 3rd quarter. Sydney skipper, Stuart Maxfield, celebrating his 250th AFL match, was stunned by a bloody head injury late in the first quarter, but inspirationally returned to the fray to lead his team to victory.

Barry Hall submitted his nomination for goal of the year with a 30 metre grubber from an impossible angle in the forward pocket, but it was the team effort of the Swans which was the reason for their resounding win. They had 66 more possessions and 20 more marks than the Bulldogs.

Swans coach Paul Roos lavished praise on the Swans' skipper.

"His game tonight, coming off with a bad head knock and going back on and kicking a key goal and getting key possessions and his hardness at the footy," Roos said. "If I had to give him a mark out of ten, it would be a ten at this stage of the year."

Roos said Paul Williams, who was replaced in the selected side by Jarrad Sundqvist, wasn't risked after injuring a calf during the week.
