North Melbourne to the Gold Coast, the AFL proposal.

Here is the proposal put to the Kangaroos to relocate to the Gold Coast. It seems that the AFL have learnt from the relocation of the Swans and the merger of Fitzroy/Brisbane Bears.

Personally I think they would be foolish to reject the offer. As I have often said about the Swans, "I would rather them survive as a relocated entity, than for them to just disappear".

Any chance the Swans getting a retrospective deal.
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

Yeah, I never really understood the Keep South at South people.
Of course at the time it was ideal, but the Swans would have died.
Relocation really was the only option and I was happy to see them survive.

    They should accept.
The "We are Noth Melbourne" group are not worth listening to for any impartial comment.
    They relocate - they survive.
They don't - they may be doomed and the AFL shouldn't bail them out in the future.

A 17th team is suddenly attractive to me.

I've always been an advocate of the romantic notion that each team plays each other twice during the season for a fair and level competitin, but that seems almost impossible now.
More likely we'll get to the point where we play 18 rounds and play each team in the competition once.

Also, the final 8 would not have to chance with 17 teams, and playing finals would mean more than simply finishing in the top 1/2 of the competition.

I'm no Kangaroos fan, but I can't help thinking they've signed their own death warrant by knocking back the AFL's offer.
The AFL's TV rights deal requires a minimum of 16 clubs, so the AFL's had to spend millions on the CBF to prop the Kangaroos up. The AFL believed, and I think they're right, that if they had to spend that money anyway they may as well invest it in a growth market than in an already over-crowded Melbourne market.
The threat of a new license is the Kangaroos' death sentence. If the AFL get the Gold Coast up, they can safely cut off the CBF money and let the Kangaroos die without jeopardising their TV rights. Unfortunately letting them die will be a slow process - it took Fitzroy 10 years, but not even the Pacific Solution could save them.

Have to agree Norris. The League want a team on the gold coast and they will get one. Then they won't want to sustain 17 teams for too long, so one will have to go.

Looks like they are going back to being North Melbourne as well.

Good luck to them. I'm definitely not buying their membership to save them.

Could I just ask, why the @@@@ does the AFL think we need a 17th team? What's their justification? And if they think we need a 17th team, why don't they consider Tasmania where AFL is already on the menu rather than the Gold Coast who COULDN'T give a flying @@@@?

I hope the AFL doesn't help them in the future.
They have been very transparent in letting everyone know that this is a once only offer, and have intimated that if the Kangaroos reject this offer, they are on their own.
Converting the name back to North Melbourne?
    Yep that is progressive.

    Goodbye North Melbourne.

Watched a quick snippet on the news this morning.

Some dill standing there saying that the Norf supporters are all going to pay their memberships and turn up to games. That is what's going to keep them in Norf.

    Bushrats.

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

My prediction is that a 17th licence will be granted. 5 years after that the kangaroos will merge with them and we will have the "Gold Coast kangaroos". Just like the Bears and Lions. You heard it here first.
