There's clearly a get-out clause in the contract for both parties, equivalent to the three-month probation that normal punters (and possibly even lawyers) get. It makes sense; it would be difficult to persuade Irish parents to send their teenager across the world without some kind of fallback, ie, six-week trial. The kid exercised it.

That would also explain why in all the stories on Coney, not a single one has even mentioned contractual issues.

Sorry to interrupt, gentlemen. Continue with your learned arguments.
With the current useless mob in charge its possible that they offered a contract with a hole in it big enough to allow an eighteen yeard old kid to jig through with the entire Riverdance troupe. In these bracing times of belt tightening it was probably drafted by Cyggie or a Dorothy McEwan

Or more likely, the kid has heaps of talent and the club are doing the sensible thing and letting him work through the issues before he may decide to try AFL again.

From what has been written he adapted better than both Kennelly and Murphy had to the same stage, the Swans wouldn't want to see him come out again to another club in 2 years time all because we roasted him over his current indecision.

Still think following on from Simon's post it'd be fairly dicey trying to prove the existence of all three elements in Coney's case. Though I somehow suspect that won't stop you trying to convince us...just like with Bevo
And just how true has he been with the sublime Bevo! Oh joy oh rapture! We love you Bevo!

Nah he's not with us anymore. I think Longmire confirmed that he was staying in Ireland for good in a recent article???

He is still in Ireland, but will probably remain on the list as an international rookie for the next two years, in case he changes his mind and decides to head out to Australia again.

This way he will still be contracted to us and another club won't be able to lure him back until after his current contract expires on the 01/11/2010.

Also the article indicates that the club still reckons he might revist his decision later on and come back for a crack at it.

Probably not, but from all reports the kid has enough talent and ability for the club to be very understanding of the current situation.

If he chooses to come back and it is with us and he makes it, we can be proud the club didn't just cut and take him to the cleaners like some hot headed people on here to seem to think was the best course of action.

Will also do our cause good for future recruiting from Ireland in that the club has demonstrated they are understanding that at 17 or 18 years of age this is a big move for some young boys.

With the Irish unemployment rate skyrocketing at 1% every month (yes the Irish tiger economy is now just a scraggy tabby) the usual historical reasons for Irish emigration may be a factor as well.

    Kennelly curse strikes again!

Coney injured and out for season.

What a shame. He could have recuperated on Bondi Beach and collect a salary at the same time. Unlikely now that the Swannies are broke.
