    Rate a Season # 21 Leo Barry

    Rate away ...
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

Like Kennelly, he wasn't his usual self (age/injury/whatever), but I still saw him as a solid contributor throughout the year. 6.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

    Solid year.

He is now finding it increasingly difficult to play the role he has been forced to play for the past 5 or 6 years. He has never been perfectly suited to the role physically, but persistence and a good spring helped him get by in defence and that 'elusiveness', so often maligned on this board, has allowed him to conribute solidly coming out of defence.

Rule changes in the past few years along with the inevitable age and wear and tear is beginning to show. He is saddling up for a final year and I hope it goes well, he's been a great servant.

Has to be used as a half-back flanker next year. No longer up to holding the gun key forwards.

Agree Plugger. Should be used on the half back line, along with Tadgh, C Bolton, Nick Malceski and maybe LRT at times.

Also, would pinch hit him up on the forward line more often than they did this season.

There were times that he did a pretty good job down back usually on a bigger opponent, but there were also times where he gave up the ball and got exposed resulting in easy goals to the opposition.

In terms of stats, there's not much difference compared to 2007 with one exception: free kicks against which have risen from avg. 1.0 in 2007 to 1.8 in 2008. He conceded 35 free kicks against compared to 14 free kicks for, mostly in the backline.

He's had some good performances against the likes of West Coast and Essendon but he's also had his fair share of shockers including a woeful performance against Collingwood. The days of him playing against the full-forward are over and should be used as a half-back flank or loose man in defence.
I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!!

He's still capable of making a contribution but that he was asked to play on in 09 underlines the dearth of quality talls in defence.

His game is the victim of the fast defensive half forward players that have flourished since 2005-2006. He will play a similar role to Benny Mathews this season in 2009. Which is he won't be playing much at all. If there is one type of player we have an abundance is the running half back - Kenneally, Mattner, Eski, the Bevanator (amongst a multitude of other roles), Barlow, etc.. He is no longer physically capable of matching it with the monster forwards and has lost a yard making him easy pickings for the forward snipers.

Did OK in some games. Went poorly in others. Looks like he's really starting to slow down. Happy to have him in the team when he's playing well.

Anyone got his stats? I haven't checked, but his "hands on his hips, throwing his head back in disbelief" count must of surely been up from 2007????

I would have thought back pocket, rotating onto the hb line when TK or Eski is off. Depth
