SYDNEY AFL ROUND 2 2009 - Loves Lost as Campbelltown Feel the Blues

Article and Photos by Michael Shillito

Campbelltown and Wests had been the top two sides after the opening round, but only one could remain on top when the two sides clashed at Monarch Oval on Sunday. And it would be Wests who would take the honours, after the Magpies were far too good for a disappointing Campbelltown.

The match began under overcast skies and within minutes the clouds would burst, leaving a slippery ball making ball handling difficult; but the surface held up well and remained in good condition throughout the day. Campbelltown got the opening centre break, but it didn't take long for the ball to find its way to the Wests forward line; where it would remain for much of the day. An early run from the Magpies would set them on their way, creating a buffer that the Blues would never look like threatening. Troy Cole snapped the first goal over the shoulder, and a few minutes later Dave Linsen was taken high and lost possession, only to have the ball fed straight to him from the contest to snap the Magpies' second. At 9 minutes, Matt Withers found space inside the 50 metre line, who found Matt Eurell unmarked in the square. A bungled kick-in went straight to Blake Bray who kicked the Magpies' 4th, and when Troy Cole set up Clout the Magpies had 5 goals already after 15 minutes.

Things got even worse for Campbelltown. Troy Cole went to ground and the umpire had no hesitation in sending Ray Love for 15 minutes in the sin bin. In the ensuing fracas, Owen Love was also given a time-out; and all the signs were there that this would be a dismal afternoon for the home side. By quarter time, with the Magpies leading by 36 points, the Blues were in serious trouble.

After the rain came the sunshine, and better conditions in the second term. But goals were to prove hard to come by for the Magpies, even though they continued to dominate play. Campbelltown's defence had tightened compared to the first quarter, and a few shots were missed. Matt Withers twice hit the post from within 30 metres; but Campbelltown were struggling and unable to penetrate the half-way line. Finally Blake Bray broke the deadlock with a clever snap from 25 metres out, and when just a minute later Bray was again in perfect position to lead out and receive a pass from Withers to add his third. Another goal would come from a grubber at the edge of the square. Campbelltown would not get an inside 50 until the dying seconds of the quarter, and were unable to trouble the scorers.

During the half-time break the clouds closed in again, and the heavens opened as the players re-entered the field for the second half. The early part of the third quarter would see Campbelltown play their best football for the day, finally making their Magpie opponents accountable and forcing them to earn their possessions in a way that hadn't been the case during the first half. A free kick to Luke Coughlan gave Campbelltown their first goal, and for a brief period it looked like the Blues may be able to add some respectability. But as time went on, it all came unstuck for them again and the Magpies re-asserted themselves in the second half of the quarter. The Magpies would add another 4 goals, and by three quarter time the margin was 80 points and the contest was over.

The sting had gone out of the game in the last quarter, with both sides going through the motions. Bassani dribbled a goal through to double the Blues' goal tally, but it was the only highlight of a quarter that was mercifully brought to an end after just 22 minutes, enabling the drenched players to head indoors to the rooms; and for the Magpies to sing their song triumphantly as the competition's top team after 2 rounds. Matt Eurell and Blake Bray kicked 3 for the Magpies, while midfielders Dwain Watkins and Medair Kassem were among their best.

East Coast Eagles had their long-awaited first home game at Bruce Purser Reserve, and a good crowd was on hand to see the Eagles take on North Shore. It was a close contest early, with just 11 points separating the sides at half time; and after the Bombers putting in a short burst midway through the quarter there was only a kick in it. But from there it was all one-way traffic as the Eagles dominated the remainder of the match to blow the margin out to 72 points, remaining undefeated while the Bombers are still awaiting their first win of 2009. Gus Seebeck kicked 7 for the Eagles, and Adam Byerlee 4; while Mark Maher and Shane Ryan were among their best.

Sydney Uni completed their first win of the season when the Students overcame a persistent Wollongong at North Dalton Oval on Saturday evening. The premiership quarter was the difference between the sides. The Students led by 14 points at half-time, but a 7 goals to 1 third term put the game out of Wollongong's reach and the University side would go on to win by 36 points. Thomas Young on his Premier Division debut kicked 6 for the Students, while Chris Clareborough and Ben Mankarious were among the Students' best. Wollongong, although defeated, never capitulated and continued to compete until the match was over; Clinton Wells and Duane Jefferis were among their best.

Defending premiers Pennant Hills remain winless after round 2, going down by 5 points to UNSW-ES at Village Green on Sunday. The Bulldogs completed the win, but the Demons will regret their inaccuracy which was a key reason for their failure to score the 4 points that the flow of the game suggested they should have picked up. The Demons led at the final change, but a 4-goal final quarter got the Bulldogs over the line; despite having 16 scoring shots to the Demons' 26. Peter Kefalas kicked 3 goals for the Bulldogs, being the only multiple goalkicker in a best-on-ground performance, while UNSW-ES were also well served by Jason Coulloupas and Marc O'Regan; while Luke Bilbe and Daniel De Looze were among Pennant Hills' best.

St George travelled to Drummoyne Oval to take on Balmain, and maintained their unbeaten start to 2009 when they took out the game by 61 points; a margin that could have been even greater had the Dragons not scored 2.7 in the last quarter. The Dragons won every quarter, but their second quarter was their best when they kicked 5 goals to 1 to increase their lead to 42 points at the long break. Jon Shineberg was the star for St George, scoring 6 goals, while Pat McBride
contibuted 3 and Ben Maddern and Stephen Wilsen were among their best. For the Dockers, Nick O'Brien scored 3 goals while Nick Todd was their best.
