SYDNEY AFL ROUND 11 - A Pride of Lions

Report and Photos by Michael Shillito

In a season where wins are hard to come by, where clubs are desperately looking for a circuit-breaker to reverse their fortunes, games against fellow strugglers can often be keenly anticipated. The skill level may not always be up there with top-of-the-table clashes, but the desperation stakes can create close and enthralling contests; and for the eventual winners the taste of victory can be sweet indeed.

So it was at the picturesque Drummoyne Oval on Sunday afternoon, as Balmain hosted Wollongong. The clubs went into the match occupying the bottom two positions on the ladder, this season being the latest in a long line of lean seasons in which neither club has won more than 4 games in any season since Wollongong were admitted to Premier Division in 2005. And yet, in such an even season, the winner would find themselves only two games out of the top 5 and with just the slimmest hopes of qualifying for playoff action.

Drummoyne Oval was in top-notch condition, conducive to a running game that both sides attempted to get going early. It wasn't always effective, but the Dockers drew first blood when Jack Dickens took possession on the forward line before being taken high; but played on, and with adventage being paid tapped through the easiest of goals. James Weavers dribbled through a quick reply, but the Dockers restored their advantage through an unopposed mark and goal to David Ryan and some quick thinking by Nick O'Brien who gathered a boundary throw-in and snapped the goal. Graeme Batty marked in the square to kick his first goal, but his set shot after the quarter-time siren went wide.

It was goal for goal in the early stages of the second term, but the latter stages of the quarter saw Balmain start to get on top. Nick O'Brien had his long kicking boots on, twice converting set shots from the 50 metre line; the first of them being instantly followed from the centre bounce by a clearance and quick goal to Nick Todd. The run of play seemed to be swinging Balmain's way, with the Lions being second to the ball, Troy Bartlett being blood-ruled and and attempted speckie by Tom Heath being unsuccessful. And luck didn't seem to be running Wollongong's way in the final second of the quarter when they got the ball forward, for Adam McConnochie to be running into an open goal when the siren beat him. The Dockers had an 18-point lead at the long break.

But whatever Wollongong coach Trevor Burnett said to his charges at half-time worked wonders, and the Lions came out firing in the third term. Attacking the ball at every contest and moving it forward, the Lions created numerous opportunities but could only manage points. But weight of possession and creating chances finally broke the Dockers' defence when Ken Ewan-Chappel marked on the edge of the square and converted. It was the start of a purple patch for the Lions. A minute later Batty marked 30 metres out and kicked truly, and at 17 minutes Mitchell Hogan put the Lions in front. The Lions went forward again to Batty, who lost
his footing but still managed to kick the ball off the ground to add another; his fourth coming moments later with a clever snap from the pocket. But, just as the game looked to be swinging Wollongong's way, O'Brien got a goal back against the run of play to cut the Wollongong lead to 10 points at the last change.

With a close contest, in what had been a game of fluctuating fortunes, both sides scented an opportunity for victory; and there were more twists in the tale to come. Being two goals down, the Dockers were looking for a quick goal to open proceedings in the last term; and came close to getting it. Dockers' playing coach Damian Hall had a set shot from just beyond the 50m line in the opening minute, but despite his torp looking good off the boot, it narrowly failed to make the distance and the Lions defence cleared the ball out of trouble.

The Dockers were to get the first goal of the last term, but had to wait till the 6 minute mark to get it. It came when Daniel Brian was paid a free for a high tackle 40 metres out, the free kick going through. A mark in the pocket to Troy Bartlett gave the Lions some breathing space, but within a minute Ryan Officer marked on the edge of the square and kicked truly; and just another minute later Dickens shrugged a tackle and had a shot on the run which put the Dockers in front.

Goal for goal early, Balmain getting a run on late in the second, Wollongong's strong third quarter and then Balmain restoring the lead in the last term - it had been a game where the momentum shifts and the swings of fortunes had unpredictably changed during the afternoon. But in the final stages, it was Wollongong who regained control and closed out the match. A lucky bounce from a long bomb by Troy Bartlett clean-bowled everyone to bounce through. A 50m penalty to Graeme Batty gave him his 5th goal, before Tom Heath twice marked and goaled from point-blank range. And although O'Brien got a late goal for the Dockers, this was to be Wollongong's day.

Wollongong had won by 14 points, their third win of the season and their first away; a result that gets the Lions off the bottom of the ladder, and just two wins out of the top 5 in a very congested part of the ladder. Graeme Batty kicked 5 for the Lions, while Luke Favetta and Alex Perger were among their best. For Balmain, it was a disappointing loss that sees them bottom of the table. The Dockers have pulled off some upsets this season, but will need to find another to climb back up the ladder. Nick O'Brien kicked 5 for Balmain, while James Miller and Janis Blums played good games for the Dockers.

Wests have had a strong season, only dropping one game so far this season; and that record was maintained when the Magpies completed a 41-point win over North Shore at Gore Hill Oval on Saturday. The Bombers stayed with the more highly-fancied Magpies for nearly three quarters, and there were only 7 points in it as the clock ticked into time-on. But Wests stepped up a gear when the match was there to be won, kicking the next 7 goals to lock the Bombers out of the contest. Gavin King and Dane Williams each kicked 4 goals for the Magpies, while Dwain Watkins and Matt Withers were among their best; while for North Shore, Ben Attwood kicked 4 and Cameron Holmes was their best contributor around the ground.

Campbelltown maintained their grip on a position in the top 5 with a 70-point win over St George at Monarch on Saturday. For much of the day the game appeared destined to be closer, with St George regretting their wasteful finishing in the second term when they kicked 1.6 for the quarter. Despite having had more scoring shots to three-quarter time, the Dragons trailed by 11 points. And, having been let off the hook, the Blues stepped up the pressure in the last term and the Dragons were unable to match it with them; the Blues doubling their goal tally with 10 unanswered goals in the last quarter. Chris Lees kicked 7 for the Blues, while Fraser Brown and Mark Edwins were dominant players. For the Dragons, Rod Craig and Declan Donohue bounced back from interrupted seasons to be solid contributors.

UNSW-ES consolidated their double-chance prospects and relegated Pennant Hills to 5th place on the ladder when the Bulldogs took out a 38-point victory at Ern Holmes Oval on Saturday. The Bulldogs got off to a strong start, with 6 goals to 2 in the opening term followed by a 7 goals to 4 second quarter to open the lead up to 45 points at the long break; and although the Demons won the second half, it was never going to be by anywhere near enough to put the result of the game in doubt. Marc O'Regan, Leigh Lavery, Jon Bradfield and Ben Sutton all kicked 3 for the Bulldogs; Jeremy Kiel and Earl Shaw being among their best. For the Demons, Ben Beaston scored 4, while Matt McCamey was a key contributor all day.

East Coast Eagles maintained their undefeated status with a 41-point win over Sydney Uni at the No 1 Oval; but although they won every quarter the Eagles didn't have everything their own way as the Students chipped in with goals at critical stages of the game to prevent the margin from blowing out. But the Eagles prevailed, retaining their position at the top of the ladder and keeping the Students a win outside the top 5 with their recent winning streak having come to an end. Gus Seebeck kicked 7 for the Eagles to take his season tally to 63; while Jon Vlatko and Mark Skuse were dominant forces in the game. For the Students, Brydon Coles and Nick Barton were among their best.
