Seems all the moves are being agreed now. Why bother with trade week? Why not just allow teams to trade from season end to list lodgement to allow clubs more time? Please explain.

It gives us something to talk about on here.
Does God believe in Atheists?
Last year we were about the only club wanting to trade and everyone said "why have trade week, what a waste of time".
That's what's good about trade week; allows people to whinge either way and has some mystic about it.
This year it will be an interesting trade week because if all the trades appear out of the way now, so day one becomes a formality, then the rumours start on the rest of the week and some clubs will jag a trade out of nowhere.
There have been some ripper rumours to date. Like Dylan Addison for Hall.
I love trade week and the discussions in the lead up. Hope we get involved!
We'll get involved and the poos and wees will do something at the last minute to stuff up a week of wheeling and dealing ... again.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.
"As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk
Trade week has been designed so that all clubs are in the one place at the one time to discuss potential trades.
It also works on the premise that if the timeline is only a week, then deals will get done quicker which will then allow for other deals to get done that might be waiting on these deals.

"Looking forward to a rebuilt, new, fast and exciting Swans model in 2010"
Having said that, there have been numerous impasses that have occurred and haven't been able to be broken in a week. I can offer no substantial evidence for it, but perhaps people think that a longer trade period would reduce such occurances as Everitt faced in 2006 and O'Keefe in 2008.
All clubs deserve an equal footing, and I have no doubt apart from a couple of back-office staff that everyone at the Saints and Cats are gearing for Saturday. While the AFL does seem to let players et al talk about verbal trade deals after round 22, I think the current timeline for official trading is acceptable. Verbal deals can change, and nothing is certain until it is signed off. But perhaps the trade deadline can be increased by a couple of days to see if a compromise can be reached.
