Question Nick Smith - stopper extraordinaire

Smiff has been a revelation as this year (we know he looked good in games last year).
I was just curious did, from those who would know (Ressie watchers?), was he always being groomed as a small defender/tagger or did he just evolve into that type of footballer as it was a position available in the seniors?

Always played the twos as an inside midfielder.

So to answer your question, it's the latter.

I have little doubt he'll slot nicely into the midfield in years to come.

He's a monster. I have nothing but respect for his game and ethos.

He has really quickly developed into one of those players that is very rarely beaten, in a contest or over a whole game. Very much a quiet achiever, but if you look at the back line, he is probably the most secure in his spot of the lot of them imo now. Really happy with his development this season and will go on to be an excellent player for us I feel.

He will slot straight into Kirk's role next year.

You said it for me. I think the most interesting note is that they held him back until he was ready, and when he was ready to play at AFL level he slotted in like he belonged. You can rely on Smiffy. I know I watched him in ressies and he had this wonderful smile of a carefree happy kid, which you don't see much now in seniors. I guess its the level of concentration he is applying at this level. Not many players one can say in such a short career that you just like to have on the ground because you can trust them.

That was my original thought, that he was the best fit for Crouchy's vacant spot.

His mum was interviewed at a Melbourne function last year and said that when he was drafted he refused to go to Sydney. It took Roosy to ring and convince him. Lucky! He is our next Brett Kirk.
