    Club Song

I appreciate that nearly all on here love the Swans "Cheer, Cheer, the Red and the White" club song (as I do), but I was thinking today that it needs a slight word change.

In the second line "Honour the name by day and by night" what is the 'name' that is meant to be honoured - there is no mention of it in the first line - the club name is not Red and White? These words are presumably just left over from the words of the chorus in the original song "Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame, Wake up the echoes cheering her name."

Considering we do not mention the name at that point I would rather we sang "Honour the club by day and by night."

    Any thoughts?

Whilst you are at it, can we somehow fit in "girt" as well...

The second line of the original version didn't seem to make much sense either. However you do have a point which I tend to agree with.

What about "honour all wines by day and by night"

Good point, but the there are inaccuracies in a lot of club songs.

    - The premiership is never usually a cake walk
    - The emblem is not for you and me
    - The Eagles are NOT flying high (NOT on the field anyway)

    etc etc

Nice that someone is as bored as I am...but...

You can't mess with it - next thing you'll be wanting to drop the banjo solo... And where do you stop? I mean, who is the "her" who has the sons marching onwards to victory? Obviously Old Notre Dame, as per your OP but do we really need to change it to "our" or "their"?

It's not about what it's referring to, it's about venerating the very name of the club - like calling Queen Elizabeth "Your Majesty" and not "Queenie"... If someone is highly repsected, you don't go throwing their name around lightly.

Besides, I like a bit of mystery. If you're a Swans supporter, you already know "the name". If you're not, we don't care that you don't know "the name".

10 minutes of diversion - yes!!!

Finally - if the Bombers can rhyme "up" with "flag", when there's a perfectly good "cup" they could be singing about grabbing, I think we're OK.

They're not a very happy team at Hawthorn.

With the poetic license of song writers, it does not have to follow a logical progression. The fact that "Swans" (in place of the original South) is mentioned later in the song is sufficient for the mention of "Honour thy Name" to be associated with it then, rather than looking for something not mentioned in the first line.

Given that the banjo solo is a relatively recent addition, why not drop it? Personally, I think a kazoo solo would be far more entertaining.
I think this point deserves a poll...
