Just arrived home. Saw the first 2 quarters and half of the 3rd quarter.

    Some observations:

    • Craig Bolton, Kieran Jack, Shane Mumford, Nick Smith, Dan Hannebery running laps during most of the game. All look superfit, especially Mummy who was sculpted by Michelangelo.
    • Stuart Dew was kicking a footy with Stuart Maxfield - he's still an unbelievable kick.
    • Best players included: TDL (4 goals I think), Adam Goodes (playing midfield and floating into forward line), Jarrad McVeigh, Gary Rohan and Josh Kennedy.
    • Gary Rohan was playing as a rebounding defender and did some good things - I like him in that position.
    • Andrejs Everitt did some good things playing as a half back flank.
    • Nick Malceski looked good, but playing much deeper in defence as a rebounder than I expected.
    • Many players looked rusty including Mark Seaby, Jude Bolton, Ben McGlynn and Rhyce Shaw.
    • It was bloody hot and they had drinks breaks 10 mins into every quarter.
    • There was a lot of talk and the team/s were in good spirit.
    • I spent most of the game talking to the brother of a recent recruit - he told me that his brother (Mr X) said we have a much better culture than the club from which he left, and Mr X was loving life in Sydney.
    • Overall, I left with a positive impression.

    Hope you found this interesting.

Yeah. Jesse didn't play. He was running laps with Kieren. Other notables missing included ROK, Smiffy, Hanners, Mummy and B2 (unsurprisingly).

Pretty scrappy affair really. Red team pressured well but were well outclassed in personnel, notwithstanding some jumper swapping as the game progressed. Most notably, Goodesy defected to the red team half way through the 2nd third. It could have been in pique, as it happened shortly after TDL floated across in front of him to take a mark that had Goodes' name written all over it and then proceeded to kick his 75th goal of the term. But it might also have been just for match-ups - Goodes went head to head with JPK in the middle after that.

Hard to pick out any stand-outs given the nature of the affair - other than TDL's goal hogging in the middle term. Macca was busy and relatively classy (and vocal when other players stuffed up). Jets and Rohan both showed their pace at times, to good effect, and Rohan in particular showed clean skills picking up the ball off the deck while running at full tilt. Joey got his hands on the ball a lot in the middle. Lewis Johnston showed some good second and third efforts.

Was like an instant replay of last year's game. I had TDL down for 5 (same as last year) & like last year the old timers Goodes, Mal & McVeigh were the other stand-outs. Of the youngsters, Rohan was outstanding off a HBF, some great tackling from Jetta (the tackling generally was of the highest order), Parker looked good early, and Johnstone did some good things.

No noticeable change to the game plan that I observed - still crap at getting the ball out of defence after a behind, still too much sideways, still too many "kick & hopes" to the forwards - but it's early days yet I guess...

And agree, RM, Mummy looked in magnificent nick. Great to see B2 running well, now more hopeful we'll see him some time this year. OTOH, Braddles was spectating behind the goals - maybe there's something in his contract about training when it gets above 28 degrees!

Just got back. Player by player summary:

    1. Seaby - Solid, not spectacular. Hasn't played footy in a while, touch rusty, but I wouldn't think it's anything to worry about. Seabs, Currie and Pyke all spent some time up forward as well.

    2. Shaw - Played mostly on the wing from what I could tell. Started horribly, redeemed himself later on with some good play, a goal or two, and some very good tackles. Saw both Shaws today.

    3. McVeigh - Quite good. Played inside and outside, won some good ball. Hands were a bit rusty at times but signs were promising.

    4. Hanners - Didn't play. Still recovering from shoulder surgery, but looked immensely fit and strong, and took part in the warm-up. Expecting good things.

    5. ROK - Also didn't play. Had a bandage on his elbow (can't remember if it was his left or right, now that I think about it), but I think the main problem was his groin. Ran laps, then went off and did some specialist work with some cones, just getting him moving rapidly from side to side, forward and back, very much testing the groin. He looked like he was passing with flying colours, so I guess he's recovering well from the surgery, just not quite ready yet. He did take part in the warm-up though, so he can't be far off.

    6. C.Bolton - Ran laps. Looked to be going about 90%, though didn't see him doing any sideways stuff. Tough to tell how far off he is, but from what I could tell he doesn't look too far off.

    7. Brett Meredith - Looked comfortable out there, won some ball, did some good stuff. Still undecided about him. Definite class but winning enough of it is the question.

    8. TDL - BOG. 6 goals, found space where there was no space to be found, and also kicked some great opportunistic goals.

    9. Malceski - Very good, used the ball well. Pretty much what we expect.

    10. Currie - Meh. I keep wanting to be impressed by him, but he just doesn't look like a senior footballer.

    11. Lamb - Quite impressed. Kicked a very smart goal to open the scoring, did some nice things, looked alright out there. Could well play seniors at some point.

    12. Kennedy - Worked his way into it after a slow start. Might have trimmed down a bit. Parker did a very good job on him, probably broke even, which is a great effort for the new kid.

    13. Everitt - No complaints. Played in defence, drifted up forward for a couple of running shots on goal (which missed, but he showed some nous). Played key defence at times, notably on LJ and Seaby, played loose at other times, and played small as well (looked like he was matched up on Krueger for a short period, for example).

    14. Bird - Looked fit as a fiddle in the warm-up, but didn't take the field for the game, nor did he run laps (might have been doing sprints or something somewhere else). Not sure what the deal is there.

    15. Jack - Ran laps. Looks fit and strong. Couldn't tell you why he didn't play though.

    16. Rohan - Has put on some muscle. Geeze, his hands were good. A couple of times he was running full pace at the ball and just picked it up off the ground without breaking stride. Also had some brilliant quick pick-ups and dish-offs. Didn't see much of his speed with ball in hand, but that was OK. Looked very good, could/should play all season.

    17. Kennelly - Ran laps. I meant it when I said he runs like a girl. Arms held up like a T-Rex. Couldn't help a giggle. Barlow ran the same way.

    18. White - Ran laps. Noticeably slimmer, looks fitter as well. Less of a giant, more of an athlete now. Body looks more like Goodes than Lockett now.

    19. Bradshaw - Not seen.

    20. Reid - Has bulked up, another preseason or two and he'll be a monster. Physically, looks absolutely ready for senior football, but he was just running laps. Took part in the warm-up though.

    21. McGlynn - Mixed bag. Looked fit, found a bit of it, but he was well off the boil. Missed a couple of shots on goal badly, missed a few targets around the field. Looked very rusty.

    22. Sumner - Not seen.

    23. Johnston - Looked pretty good. He's not going to be a power forward by the look of things, but he's a smart player, good skills, and he held his own in the physical contests. Not bad. Should play some seniors, barring a dream injury run for our forwards, but will play as a flanker, not a key forward.

    24. J.Bolton - Pretty solid. No complaints.

    25. Richards - Played on Johnston most of the time. Did well. Not too much to say, really.

    26. Parker - OMFG I LOVE HIM! OK, a bit excited, but the kid can play. Doesn't have a freakishness about him that some players have, but he found the ball, he used it well, and he's STRONG. He rag-dolled Josh Kennedy! Won a HTB for his troubles as well. He was matched up on JPK, who he played on all day, and I'd say he broke even, which as I said before is a great effort. Genuine Rd 1 chance, depending on injuries. Plays a bit like ROK (midfield version). Definitely on the bandwagon now.

    27. Spangher - Ran laps. Pretty big unit, looks fantastic, but of course, looks can be deceiving!

    28. McNeil - Dil was great. Played midfield, won a fair bit of ball in close, and held his own despite his small stature. He's bulked up, but still has a turn of pace, and he's clever. Chance for an elevation and debut this year, definitely.

    29. Mattner - Took me until the last "third" to realise he was playing. But then, he was playing deep defence, so that's probably a good thing.

    30. LRT - Ran laps, mainly with Max Otten trailing behind (mentor role?). Looked his big, goofy self.

    31.

    32. Jetta - Didn't have a great day. Found a bit of it, did some nice stuff, but just looked hesitant. Didn't look hungry at all. He has bulked up a bit though.

    33. Moore - Didn't notice him much, but when I did, he was always doing something good. I guess that's just the way with Moore. It will always be quality over quantity, but there'll come a point where he needs to step up and get more involved.

    34. Johnson - Didn't notice him much, but he spent some time on Goodes, and Goodesy didn't tear him apart, so he can't have been doing too badly.

    35. Heath - Walking freely, didn't do any running though. Still has an impressive rig.

    36. McKaigue - Looked pretty good out there. Played deep defence. Raking left boot. Also turning into a fairly solid unit. Chance for seniors this year, though I'd say it's unlikely.

    37. Goodes - Looked pretty good. Clean hands, hit targets, very very solid. Clearly sitting in a low gear though.

    38. Pyke - Good in the ruck, somewhat anonymous up forward (though he did bring the ball to ground a few times for the crummers, which was good to see). Better ruck option that Currie, definitely.

    39. Grundy - Solid, used the ball well when he had it. No complaints.

    40. Smith - Took part in the warm-up but ran laps during the game. Looked fit.

    41. Mumford - Probably a bit too heavy at the moment (probably due to being unable to run for so long). Didn't take part in the game.

    42. Bevan - Didn't make any shockers that I noticed. Played a pretty solid game.

    43. Krueger - Like the look of him. Tough, has some genuine toe, and taller than I thought he was. Skills are below standard, but he's a relative newcomer to the game, it'll come. Could be a player.

    44. Otten - Ran laps. Looks a good size, could end up a genuine KPD.

    45. Gordon - Yeah, he's alright, he's a real goer and looked alright with ball in hand, but TDL tore him apart. Just don't see him as a senior player. Would love to be proved wrong though, as he's got a great work ethic.

    46. Ben Haren - Didn't play. Ran laps for a while, and looked OK in the warm up.

Top-ups - There was a skinny red-head (not Haren) who competed OK. Whoever wore number 4 for the reds looked classy as well, and did some good stuff (might have been Potter, not sure).
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

Well you have all said it and I can add little. EXCEPT there were a number of Academy players, including the bright redheaded bloke and a little pocket rocket with 22 on his back. Smaller than Benny but of the same ilk. Can we keep him?

Eye Candy alert. Smiffy. .... I have nothing left to say. Peb looks as hard as rocks. Sammy is couger alert material.......I mean its not decent a kid of his age should look like that.....Mumf is in his own class. Harem has put on definition in the weeks since I mentioned his running last time.

It was worth the effort to get there. Especially watching Lew toss I think it was Gary over the sideline.

Hilarous to see little Razer Ray umping, he is very little, and the other umps who were probably locals were not much bigger. Much more useful than just having coaches doing the job.

Jetts may think he has strengthened his matchsticks, and put on 6kg but ...........more inclined to pass by foot and more accurately.

Henry was there, so was Crouchy, the two Stueys, and the big boss wore red while the others wore yellow.

Noone appears to have limped off the ground.

Gary Rohan is going to be in a league of his own; he has grown from a kid into a bloke in a short period of time, he is so quick off the mark it is scary, he plays an adult game.

Toppies stood out as being one plane and then came the rest. But to give them credit they all worked their butts off.

I think I am going to like Insey.

They call Eugene Kruger "Eugene". With a name like that why find another one.

Some of them changed sides and they swapped jumpers. Hot sweaty wet smelly used soggy jumpers......ick.

Nipper is now way too tall and big for his name.

Macca is a great voice in the play. He seems to be able to read it well in advance and give instant direction.

As someone else said, Curry ...... well, umm, err......sigh.

If you are going to play seniors this year, you are going to have to work your arses off to get there, and the same if you want to stay there, no matter who they are.

Arrived at the ground a few minutes after the 9am start. There were 3 groups of players:
1 main group in the middle of the oval during various kicking and marking drills
1 side group doing handball and close-in drills. A sub-group of topups were doing similar drills but separate from the listed players
    1 group running laps.

The went through their drills for about 40 minutes before the game began. The match itself was a bit weird, I think there were breaks in the middle of the 3 periods but I couldn't distinguish between those breaks and the end of the periods. Umpires Ray Chamberlain, Simon Meredith and new umpire #36 were umpiring. The assistant coaches Maxfield, Playfair and I think Blakey did the boundary throw ins. I don't think they were playing NAB Cup rules. Weatherwise, it was fairly hot but not as humid as last year and there was a cooling breeze blowing through in the second part of the game.

    • Mark Seaby - I thought he had a great game. In the ruck contests, he broke even with Mike Pyke but it was in the other facets of his game that he shone. He competed well for the loose ball, even those at his feet and he was tight defensively. There was one passage of play in the forward pocket where Nathan Gordon tried to baulk him twice. Seaby didn't buy either attempt and made Gordon pay with a crunching tackle over the sideline. His long absence from the game and the emergency of Mumford and Pyke may have whetted his competitive appetite.
    • Rhyce Shaw - It just didn't go right for Shaw for most of the game, I think he was playing as a tagger. He gave away a couple of silly free kicks through the middle and then jumped too early in a defensive marking contests letting his man Parker mark unopposed for the second goal of the game. He also gave Gary Rohan a superb death stare when the redhead missed a simple 20m kick to an unopposed Shaw in the back half
    • Jarrad McVeigh - He dominated the midfield for the white team, ran hard as usual and used the ball very well. It looked like Brett Meredith was running with him for most of the first period (stanza/quarter whatever you want to call it) but it didn't affect McVeigh's output.
    • Daniel Hannebery - Running laps, and was pushing his small group of Nick Smith and Max Otten (I think) very hard
    • Ryan O'Keefe - Did a running drill with Sam Reid where they both sprinted about 20m and back and did some pushups at every rep.
    • Craig Bolton - Running laps by himself, at a fair pace and looks in good nick
    • Brett Meredith - Slightly disappointing given all the pre-season hype. I was expecting a lot more from him. It felt like he was chasing McVeigh's tail for most of the first part of the game and only when he switched over to the white team did he find more of the ball. However, he wasn't particularly effective with it.
    • Trent Dennis-Lane - One of the things that I love about a TDL bag of goals is that you know they will all be unique and different. By my count he kicked 3 from a set shot, 2 from a tackle and crumb, 1 on the run and 1 from in close after quick hands. Besides his great conversion rate, the part of his game that impressed me the most was his defensive pressure. As mentioned above, he nailed his oppponent Nathan Gordon twice with a great tackle after a short sprint to close the distance between them.
    • Nick Malceski - Had a fair bit of it early on but don't recall too much after the first break to be honest, good or bad.
    • Daniel Currie - Crusher started at full forward for the whites, but couldn't gobble any marks coming his way. Switched to the red ruckman but found it tough against the bigger bodies of Pyke and Seaby who easily held Currie off with their strength. Well down the pecking order I'm afraid
    • Jed Lamb - Did not recognise him at first because he was much taller and lankier than I expected. I just had a look at the site and he is listed as 181cm which really surprised me because my first guess was that he was Everitt who's listed as 193cm! He may have put on a few cms between the draft and today! I can see where the Steve Johnson comparisons come from - his first goal was a result of finding a little bit of space in tight traffic and snapping with his left. He moved really well too and could be useful as a lead up player
    • Josh Kennedy - He was wearing number 18 and I immediately mistook him for Jesse White given how similar their physiques are now. He had a relatively quiet game in the middle, fed out handballs as usual but couldn't dominate his man Luke Parker who matched him physically
    • Andrejs Everitt - I was very impressed with his warmup, he kicked well on both sides and moved freely too for a tall man. He carried this over into the match where he was initially on Lewis Johnston and probably just outpointed him in the few contests they had. He took some of the kick-ins which further illustrates what a good kick he is. He had one big kick on goal, it would have been a supergoal under NAB Cup rules, he hit it well but it just missed.
    • Craig Bird - Looked good in the warm up too, a bit more slim than I can remember. Competed competently as an inside midfielder but faded as the game went on
    • Kieren Jack - Running laps, topless. Apparently suffered a foot injury during training.
    • Gary Rohan - They've earmarked him as a rebounding defender for the forseeable future and he played with a lot of confidence today, albeit against a top up (Kane Murphy). Displayed his blistering pace on a number of occassions with dashes up the field, but I also liked his reading of the play down back. I would have loved to see how he went on a more dangerous opponent like Dennis-Lane
    • Tadhg Kennelly - WOW! The RealCommando has been to work on Tadhg, he is built like a tank now, and probably has the physical attributes to cut it as a key defender now. (although probably not the defensive skills). The big question now is whether this bulk will hamper his running out of the half back line.
    • Jesse White - Running laps, topless
    • Daniel Bradshaw - I think he was sighted with a footy in hand, but not running laps
    • Sam Reid - Running laps with his shoulder strapped
    • Ben McGlynn - Not his best game, had just one shot on goal thanks to a great Pyke tap but missed with his wrong foot.
    • Byron Sumner - Appeared halfway through the warmup with a backpack and in training gear, but just stood in the shade with the WAGS and watched.
    • Lewis Johnston - In the same vein as Meredith, I was expecting big things today due to the pre-season hype. He was beaten by Everitt early on and was solid but didn't dominate when he was playing on Alex Johnson later on.
    • Jude Bolton - Plugged away in the midfield again and was responsible for 2 goals. One was a quick one two handball with TDL and the other was a calm kick to find an unmarked Josh Kennedy in the forward 50
    • Ted Richards - Started on Kruger and easily beat him. Then moved on to someone else who I can't remember. Nothing too memorable, he had the ball a few times and used it adequately
    • Luke Parker - Big ticks on this kid, he has the physique to play in the midfield already and he demonstrated this by laying a great tackle on the massive Josh Kennedy and earning himself a HTB free kick. He showed smarts to stay down while his man Shaw flew in vain for the mark which allowed him to have a set shot and converted.
    • Matt Spangher - Lap runner, but was vocal in his encouragement of the other players running laps
    • Dylan McNeil - Showed he could cut it in the middle despite his small stature. Started the game like the proverbial house on fire, had a few telling clearances. Has had a fair chop of his curly hair so it took me a while to recognise him.
    • Martin Mattner - Not sure where he was for the first part of the game, I only twigged that he was playing when he swapped with Gordon to mark TDL. Possibly due to the domination of the White team.
    • Lewis Roberts-Thomson - Running laps, with a lot of hair under that visor.
    • Lewis Jetta - No fancy colour boots today. He didn't have many chances to display his speed today. There was one passage of play down the Bus Stop wing where he tried to run past Jackson Potter but Potter laid a good tackle to force him over the sideline. Looks like the blindfolded goalkicking drill failed, he hit the post (almost at the top!) from a 30m set shot
    • Jarred Moore - Noticed him more during the first half where he directed the forward line traffic for the white team with aplomb. Other than that, didn't trouble the scoreboard and probably didn't give the statisticians much work either.
    • Alex Johnson - tough day for the young kid, he started on Goodes at CHB and immediately found himself trailing the Brownlow medallist on the lead. Later played on Johnston but wasn't involved in much of the play
    • Campbell Heath - Amazing to see him walking about so soon after the surgery, he may have lost just a teensy wincy bit of his impressive muscle
    • Chris McKaigue - Played with a lot more confidence than in the corresponding game 12 months ago. He spent most of the game deep, can't recall who his opponent was though. His kicking action still looks awkward, but is quite effective.
    • Mike Pyke - Broke even with Seaby at the ballups/throw-ins but was inferior when it came to general play.
    • Heath Grundy - They try to direct a lot of play through Grundy coming out of defence. He uses it well and is fit enough to run off his (usually) taller opponent so this isn't much of a surprise. Defensively didn't have much to do.
    • Nick Smith - Did the warmups and so I expected him to play but ended up running laps with Hanners
    • Shane Mumford - Huge man. Ran laps
    • Paul Bevan - Hair looks lighter, might have gone a tad overboard with the peroxide. Not many memorable pieces of play although he did snap a goal for the white team
    • Eugene Kruger - One impressive run down the wing with a not-as-impressive kick into the forward 50. Besides this, was quite anonymous playing as a key? forward.
    • Max Otten - I think he was running laps, although at times I confused him and Haren
    • Nathan Gordon - I'm not sure whose idea it was for Nipper to play down back, as in all the ressies games I've witnessed he has played as an inside midfielder, winger of half-forward. TDL has already embarassed a number of experienced AFL defenders so it was no surprise that Nipper found it tough today. Just took half a second too long on 2 plays and was nailed by TDL both times leading to a goal. Otherwise he actually used the ball well in the defensive half.
    • Ben Haren - See Otten.
