Bulldogs rank Barlow ahead of Vespa?

The Bulldogs have put rookie-listed Ed Barlow in their 25, ahead of Paddy, for the opener against Essendon.

I thought Paddy did all right in the NAB (though admittedly I watched one quarter). He's not on the Hun injury list.

Ed would make an ideal sub. He could play tall or small, up forward, down back or in the midfield, has incredible fitness as we all well know from his domination of the time trials.

Vespa was one of our players (at the time) that immediately came to mind that would be affected when the AFL said the 3+1 interchange would come into play. Unless he has improved his aerobic capacity by a significant margin, teams just cannot afford to carry him on a 3 man interchange.

This is what I was thinking. No surprise really.

Also, while I agree with Ugg that his flexibility is a bonus with the sub rule, I don't think he'll make a good sub himself. His fitness means he can be played for long minutes, and this would be wasted as a sub. However, his flexibility means that the Doggies can afford to go in with a less flexible player as a sub, so if a player who isn't like-for-like is injured (e.g. they have a midfielder as a sub but a key forward goes down), they can shift Barlow forward and put the sub into the midfield.

This is why versatile players are going to be so important even when they're not subs, and why single-position players are going to have to work extra hard. There are gonna be a lot of midfielders who will be spending some time with the forwards in training this year.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

Exactly - Ed can be underwhelming anywhere on the ground.

Actually I was surprised by Vespa not getting a guernsey at all. He got a good run in the NAB and was plugged as one of those new players who was going to take the Dogs to the next level. Looks like the Dogs have more faith in baby LIbba and Wallis.

Good points from Ugg about Ed's prospects as a specialist sub. I could make an unkind joke about how he is suited to playing half a game, but I won't.

Former Swan chance to make debut with Dogs..

    ...and it ain't Vez!!

Rather, old Cheese Barlow has been named as an emergency. Go figger!

Not sure what happened to Prez? Thought he'd had an OK pre-season.

EDIT: Apologies you quick chappies have spotted this already in the general footy forum. Still who reads that?

I don't read any particular forum - I have a bookmark that goes straight to "new posts" which gives doesn't discriminate between forums.

I was a b it taken back! Of course we are going to keep an eye on our own recycled players, its only natural - we may have been wrong.......or not.

But I was a bit ooohhheeeddd!!!! by seeing Cheese ahead of Ves! Just one of those threads we ARE going to follow isn't it. Curiousity.

That was because of his physical gifts, his athleticism and his skills. Much like young Goodes, Ed could at times be away with the fairies- Goodesy reduced the amount of game time he was useless, but Ed seemed to just increase the amount of gametime that he was a bunny in headlights. It's a shame, he's a lovely kid and I was really very excited for his future at the Swans. Best of luck to him.

Those positive attributes haven't really changed, either. If Rocket can get Ed's mind on the game, look out. He's just turned 24- they could get quite a few years out of him yet.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
