We might have had a chance in the dry but with the wet there's was just a sense of wonder that we hung in so long. In the last few years it looked like the Swans were overawed by the Cats, Pies and Saints. Last night it looked like they thought they could win but lacked the skills. If we'd won last night it'd be season-defining but I don't think the loss was. But if we can't beat the Pies and Cats (in R23) in the H&A it's hardly worthwhile turning up for finals.

    A few observations:

    - I generally agree with the tenor of Top40's post. Yes, it was frustrating to watch and we were finally called out for the skill errors the team's been making all year, but especially by the end, I think it was inexperience and fatigue that told heavily. We still might have lost because Geelong are still a decent team but the fade in the final quarter was disappointing.

    - When McVeigh had his break out season in 2008, he worked his butt off. Indeed, he said after he won the B&F that he'd decided to take his fitness to another level and then make use of that on field. I realise he now gets tagged more than he did in 2008 but I think he's forgotten just how hard he worked onfield in 2008. Even in 2009-10 his workrate had dropped off a bit.

    - ROK's style from the midfield has always been dominated by long, speculative kicks forward. It was actually quite a valuable facet when the rest of the team were intent on slowly chipping it forward, and especially where it enabled MickyO or Hall to get a one-on-one contest with an oppponent. They knew what he was likley to do and were able to play to it. Problem is, we don't have MickyO or Hall up forward anymore. Instead we have a relatively inexperienced forward line (especially when Goodes isn't there) with no structure to speak of. And so ROK's delivery forward is creating nothing. That doesn't explain (or excuse) his shorter kicks from further back that are missing targets too frequently but sadly that is a malaise affecting much of the team at the moment.

    - Hanners is getting much closer attention this year than last, which is to be expected, and at the moment it is probably something he is struggling with. It is a pretty common syndrome for young rising stars (in the broadest sense) and a reason why many are deemed to suffer from "second season blues".

    - Who's taken our Reg away and can we have him back please? He is still doing reasonably well defensively but he looks slower than last year, is not bending down as well to gather ball off the ground (something he showed immense improvement on last year) and his disposal is shocking whereas it was pretty reliable last year. I know it is easy to blame injuries, but having watched him for four weeks now, I suspect he is carrying an injury - possibly in the groin area - that is affecting several aspects of his game. It is pure guesswork but would explain why the things that have dropped off have dropped off so much.

    Respectively disagree.

Last year the Swans lost by 53 points in a home game against the Cats. They also lost comfortably by 37 points to the Dockers at the SCG in the rain.

    Sydney still finished 5th.

I would mark this game against Geelong at the SCG as the 4th toughest game for the Swans in 2011, with only the home game against the Pies, and the away games against Carlton and Geelong being, at least on paper, tougher. If Sydney lose just four games for the entire season, (I dream of course), they may well win the Minor Premiership or at least finish second to Collingwood.

Fourteen years wfollowing the Swans home (and as many away as I can afford ), first time I ever got the margin right.

I saw nothing in the game that I hadn't seen in the last three. We have had players with awful disposal skills (Reid, Johnson, Jetta), horrible decision-making (Bevan, Mattner, McGlynn) and players who just go completely missing (White). We just came up against a better side.

Yep - stopped the ball dead like it was dry.
We had no-one in that class.

    Apparently a glass-half-full man.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

But God he plays for frees. There was one time when I had my binoculars on him when he had the ball in traffic and as he lost control his head jerked back though no one went near it. Whistle, free, goal.

He did good, even amazing things after that but like Lloyd and Johnston he was just an annoying player who milks for frees.

Reports on Pyke seem to indicate that he has improved his game awareness to the stage where he should now be considered in place of either White or maybe Reid who is only just 19 so he needs to be carefully managed for his long term well being.

Pykes actual ruck work is really of a very high AFL standard so we would actually gain when Mummy comes off the ball compared to losing when White goes on ball. So get Pyke into the team and give Mummy more bench time and try Pyke rotating up forward for a few games, he takes a good grab, has pace and by your reports his kicking is much improved. I know we traded Seaby in but Pyke has moved past him.

    On other selection matters,
I despair that Meredith is not going to make the grade, maybe bite the bullet and have a look at Parker next time we need a genuine midfield replacement.
    TDL doesn't sound ready
Moore will be rushed into the seniors but for all his positives, I still worry about being exposed for lack of pace at senior level.
Not a good night to judge but is the Johnson experiment over for now?
Pykie kicked 4 in the resies. Meredith was ok in the resies (last half). I think Reid is worth persevering with. Our game plan of taking the ball down the sides & playing on from the kick out & kicking to a pack is not. I said dispatches before that specialist forwards complete a team & if we had a smart experienced forward we would never have been left with no players past their 50 metre arc. Moorey played pretty well in the half of the resies I saw. Lewis J & Chris McKaigue played pretty well. I agree Mummy can't be asked to do this week in week out. Jesse needs to go back to the two's. I think Shaw either needs to pick up on his delivery or have a run in the dew as well (his effective disposal count would have been below 50%). Everitt stuffs up too much for a half back. Our blokes were out bodied & out skilled. We need a new game plan that includes hitting our own players with passes not the opposition. I thought Bevo played well & put his body on the line. I don't know who was on Taylor in the last but he was always on his own at the kick ins & when they attacked from out of defence. We were very sloppy in the wet mainly because we haven't had too many opportunities to train in the rain, the Cats had as it has been raining in Melbourne for the last fortnight. Their bigger bodies told as well but our coaching staff did nothing to combat this as the Bombers coaches did when confronted with the same situation. The umpires in the first half were whistling the play quickly if a pack developed but they changed in the second half to the old system of letting the play go (2 did 1 played the new interpretation) which suited the Cats (bigger bodies they bullocked the ball out). Our guys were too loose & we had no forward set up. You can't win games with no players in your forward 50 to kick goals. We were also smashed around the packs & we let them set up at centre bounces the way they have for the past 6 years with no impedance. Ottens will tap the ball to the defensive side where 2 out of three centre square Cats are set up, the runners come from the sides to take no matter which way they come out. Not rocket science as they have been doing it for so long. Te Pies, Saints & Hawks block them we needed to do the same.

We were beaten by a seasoned, hard bodied, experienced side. The Swans made too many clangers, where they really counted. However, we were only beaten because we wasted opportunities. The Match Committee didn't assist with the game structure in the third quarter. You can't kick goals with the ball coming down field and three opposition defenders ahead of the ball and no Swans forwards. Everitt made not only the one miskick, he has a problem. He has to be replaced hopefully by Kennelly and this should add some reliability and run coming out of defence. Jetta looks lost at the moment and I suspect he is not being allowed to play his natural game. A big mistake if that's the case. On the bright side there's good depth in the Ressies and the Match Committee has some options including relief for No 41. Hopefully they will review the game plan.

Just a note apropos nothing. That was a really hard game last night and I bet the Cats wake up this morning knowing they have played. Because it was such a scrap for the whole match there was little finesse but just grunt everywhere. Quite a bit of it was played right in front of us and it was awesome to see how much harder it was at each contest than when there's a dry ball and cleaner possession. I can only remember three other Sydney games played in such miserable conditions in the past decade so it's not like it was familiar territory for the kids out there tonight.
