Ted Richards on raising the draft age to 19

Title says it all really. Interesting thoughts, well-written as usual by Ted, with agreement from Roos.

Lift draft age to 19 and relieve students' stress

For sure. I've heard Roos make this argument before and it obviously influenced his recruitment policy as coach. The draft is a crap shoot because of the young age of draftees so you're a much better bet attracting 20-23 yo players already in the system looking for an opportunity.

I'm guessing the current practice is driven by the AFL's competition for talent against cricket, basketball, league, etc. I wouldn't expect it to change.

I don't disagree but on the other hand, guys can be anywhere from
17-19 in year 12. We got Hannebery as an 18 yo but before he completed year 12 and he had the opportunity to finish school knowing he was already drafted. The fact that he played seniors while at school was unusual and a huge bonus and from memory he did quite well at school too.

I think it probably depends on the situation and the individual ...

I think the idea has merit, but would need to be phased in over a few years, otherwise the draft it happens on would just be the guys who all missed out the years before.

Year 1 - make the age 18y 3mths which means there will be 9 mnths worth of new players.
    Year 2 - 18y 6mths - again 9 months worth of new blood
    Year 3 - 18y 9mths - ditto
    Year 4 - 19 - ditto

I don't dislike the idea, I think it could be rather good for the various state leagues etc. as I assume it would mean there'd be some gun potential AFL draftees playing VFL/SANFL/WAFL/NEAFL for that extra year with a lot more focus on them (assuming they don't just extend the TAC Cup age bracket).
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
