What a terrible start that was. How funny footy is.

T'was a great year to be a long suffering Swans fan. I count 19 of those games I went to and can remember just about every one of them vividly...

I didn't go to any games back then. (3 kids under 3 will do that to you)
But I saw most games, or at least the highlight replays.
The most vivid memory is still Richo's free against Dunkley in the Goal Sq, followed by Plugger paddling the ball away as fast as his legs could carry him.

And thats when everything clicked. They started to believe in themselves after that win. What a great year to be a Swans supporter. There's a great DVD out called Sensational Sydney. It highlights all the Swans 1996 games. Fantastic viewing

I remember 1996 for all the wrong reasons. I worked 7 days a week, built my own house in the first 6 months of the year. Had 4 Saturday's off in that entire year - coinciding with the Swans playing in Melbourne. The day they played Hawthorn it was raining and I ended up digging a trench for Telecom because it was too wet for the poor dears to do it themselves. I did get to the game though, still have the footy record around here somewhere. Weird what we remember.

Neither did I, I couldn't afford to fly down from Townsville every week!

My second year as a member and a year where the Swans stopped being a punch line and were embraced by the city.

    So many great memories...

-Beating Richmond at Waverly with the help of Richo
-Beating Hawthorn with sound of the Speedway in the background
-Terrific comeback for a draw against the Bombers at a sodden SCG
    - The Centenary match against the Dees at the MCG. Caught my first ever plane that weekend and my first time at the MCG
    - Amazing game and victory again the Blues at Princes Park
    - Roos' 300 against Norf
    - 44,000 crammed in against the Cats
    - Pluggers 100th goal and 12 for the day with the big fella at the peak if his powers
    - Syyyyydddddnnneeeyyy
    - First final at the SCG with the Cressa mark and goal to win the game.
    - THAT POINT

While 2005 was the ultimate in that we won the comp there were more highlights in 96 than 05.
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

And the legal appeal about Dunkley's suspension? The 1996 season was full of drama.

Have a feeling that was down at Kardinia Park in 97. Still my memory is pretty ordinary at the best of...ummm.. What were we talking about.
