Elimination Final 2 - St. Kilda vs Sydney

Are we a better side than the one that contested last year?s finals series?

At first glance, you?d have to say no. Last year, we won 13 games, lost 9, and finished 5th. This year, we won 12, lost 9, drew 1, and finished 7th on percentage. So we have to travel interstate for our Elimination Final.

    But appearances can be deceptive.

This year, we have a far better record against top 4 sides. We?ve beaten the teams that came 2nd and 4th at their home grounds, been genuinely competitive against the minor premiers for the first time in years, defeated one of last year?s grand finalists, and interestingly, scored most of our premiership points away from Sydney.

How ironic ? we?d have a home final at the SCG if we?d won even one more game there.

So where does that leave us against St. Kilda this Saturday night?

While this week?s game is at their preferred venue, they don?t have a good record against the top 8 this year, let alone the top 4. Their record stands at 2 wins, eight losses. Their sole win against a top 4 side was against the Eagles in Round 17 at Etihad Stadium, with their only other top 8 win being against Carlton last week - and you?d suspect Carlton didn?t exactly go flat out.

So, all things considered, we appear to be evenly matched.

Having said that, I believe we can win.

I think we?re psychologically stronger than we were a year ago, which is the key to winning away. We were very convincing in the match against Geelong a couple of weeks ago ? the way we played reminded me of our efforts in 2005. Real team spirit, play-for-each-other type stuff.

It?s going to be an absolute cracker of a game. I hope there?s plenty of red-and-white in attendance to cheer us onwards to victory.

Tight struggle followed by us kicking away! That's my plan anyway haha

We can't afford the ridiculous inaccuracy of the ANZ game a few weeks ago. Hopefully that is long behind us.

I blame you for not getting them across the line there. You need to do better this weekend.

    Such a simple game really;

    1. Defence to keep on keeping on. Give Roo no room (let's see how many frees he gets this week. I bet you they start paying him ridiculous frees). Smith on Milne. Shaw to wipe Schnieder (that is crucial). Kosi will give them another option they didn't have last time so the boys will need to be extra switched on around any crumbs.
    2. Mummy to dominate.
    3. Joey to be a contested clearance machine again (we all know he loves a final).
    4. Tag the arses off their other key mids.
    5. Rohan will be the X Factor again because they won't know how to match up on him. I predicted he would kick 4 last week but he will this week. After a nervous 1st quarter he will light up Etihad
    6. Parker late in the game. Kid can find some room.
    7. Goodes will do whatever he wants.
    8. Spangher to strut out 4 solid quarters.
    9. Kick straight.

    WIN.

Don't get the betting odds, with the Saint's tipped to win easily, especially after our recent good form.

Pretty typical, narrow and biased melbourne view

We should show them a thing or two.

Should win by a 2-3 goals.

Doesn't even feel like a final.
Didn't have to line up for tickets on Monday morning.
I'd feel so much more comfortable if it were in Sydney.
    Damn you Richmond!!
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.
