    Sydney AFL Round 1 2012

    SYDNEY AFL ROUND 1 2012.

The winds of change blew long and hard over the Sydney football landscape over the off-season. The Swans? monopoly at AFL level came to an end as the GWS Giants took their place in the elite league. The NEAFL entered its second season, with Sydney Uni and Sydney Hills Eagles joining the new interstate league ? the Sydney Hills name another change in the football landscape, for the club that had won the last three premierships under the East Coast name.
With the Students and Eagles fielding teams in the NEAFL, their Premier Division teams in 2012 are their reserves teams. Since the Sydney AFL adopted a divisional structure in 2009, it?s a frequent occurrence for one club?s seniors to play another?s reserves; but this now happens in Premier Division as well as the other divisions.
The coming of the NEAFL, and other events within clubs, saw clubs? already high player turnover rates increase further. And the coaching merry-go-round was more intense than ever; and by the time the 2012 season started, only two of the 11 Premier Division coaches last season are to coach the same club in Premier Division this year.

The Sydney AFL season started in March for the first time in living memory, with a full round of matches across the divisions.
Pre-season preparations for all clubs had been difficult, with an exceptionally wet period in the leadup to the season causing training venues and practice matches to be washed out. But when the day of the season opening dawned, our grounds were bathed in sunshine and venues were in good condition.

A Saturday twilight match at Mike Kenny Oval saw Pennant Hills take on North Shore. Both clubs have enjoyed success in recent years, playing off in the Elimination Final in the last two seasons. The Demons took the honours in 2010 before the Bombers turned the tables in 2011. But with the Eagles and Students no longer fielding their senior teams in Premier Division, both the Demons and Bombers will be looking to make the next step in 2012 and challenge for the premiership.
The Demons started brightly, with a returning star making an immediate impact. Ranga Ediriwickrama, after a few years on Geelong?s rookie list but unable to crack a senior game with the high-flying Cats, found himself back at Pennant Hills. And twice playing on from tight angles to goal, it was a welcome return to the Demons.
After a phantom siren sounded at the 10 minute mark, maybe an alarm from the car park, the Bombers began to find some drive. Dale Fitzgerald stood out, with some nice runs with multiple bounces down the wings. Tim Schmidt, after crossing over from Balmain to join the Bombers, found himself with an easy shot at goal after a 50 metre penalty, but it would be the Bombers? only goal of the quarter and they trailed by ten points at quarter time.
A run of five unanswered goals for the Bombers at the start of the second term turned the quarter time deficit into a 17-point lead. Daniel Roberts scored four of those goals, all of them on the lead, and the Bombers were looking good. But although they continued to attack, they would then find themselves frustrated again by the ball-magnetism of Kieran Wright; as the reigning Phelan Medallist was putting in a blinder across the half-back line.
At the other end of the ground, the Demons were squandering chances; and at one stage had 2.13 on the scoreboard before Alex Goodall and Tim Scoular goaled in quick succession to cut the margin back to within a kick.
And then disaster struck for North Shore, as Brendan Fitzgerald went down after a bump. The trainers placed him in a neck brace and the ambulance was called; half time being brought forward a couple of minutes early while Fitzgerald waited for the ambulance to arrive.

It took less than a minute after half time for the Demons to regain the lead, Brant Jack on the lead doing the honours. The bounce of the ball wasn?t running North Shore?s way, as a poor bounce wasn?t recalled; but while the Bomber players stopped in anticipation of the whistle that didn?t come, the Demons booted the ball forward for Ediriwickrama to goal.
Momentum had swung the Demons? way, and they weren?t letting go. The Bombers hung in there to stay within eight points at the last change, but didn?t look like getting back into the contest. And so it would prove in the last term, five goals to one extending the final margin to 21 points; Matthew Carey getting plenty of possession in the second half, while a quality goal to Under 18s best & fairest Thomas Edmunds, the latest in the Demon production line of talent, wrapped the game up.
Ediriwickrama finished with four goals for the Demons, and along with Aaron Crisfield and Alex Goodall was listed among their best. For North Shore, Daniel Roberts? four goals in the second quarter was their best individual haul; earning Roberts a place along with Chris Murphy and Lachlan Kilpatrick as one of North Shore?s best.

After a winless 2011, Campbelltown started their first game of 2012 promisingly. Taking on Illawarra at Monarch on Saturday afternoon, the Blues had six goals on the board in the blink of an eye, and held an 18-point lead at quarter time. But new Illawarra mentor Ken Ewen-Chappell?s address to his charges in the quarter time huddle had the desired effect, as the Lions took control of the game in the second quarter. Clearing the ball from the centre with regularity, the Lions scored nine goals to one, turning their deficit into a 34-point half time lead.
The third quarter was more evenly contested, but that wasn?t enough for the Blues to be a chance of getting back into the contest. And the Lions, with their tails up and scenting a victory, kicked a further five goals in the final quarter to extend the final margin to 50 points.
Jacob Brookfield proved his worth on the forward line with a return of four goals for the Lions; while Luke Rutter, Barron Hanson and Ethan Hailey were among the Lions? best. For the Blues, Taran Etto had a senior debut to remember with four goals; and along with Joshua Van Leunen and Bryce Martin, was a prominent player around the ground.

It was a clash of the Eastern Suburbs universities at Trumper Park on Saturday afternoon, with UTS playing host to UNSW-ES. Both sides, working to build new game plans under new coaches, took some time to find their feet. After a slow first quarter, the Bulldogs clicked into gear in the second quarter. A high-scoring shootout yielded seven goals to four, the Bulldogs leading by 31 points at the long break.
The Bulldogs could have taken the game even further out of the Bats? grip during the third term, but inaccurate finishing would cost them dearly. The Bulldogs kicked 1.5 for the quarter, squandering some goal-scoring chances. But they regained their goal-kicking radar in the final quarter with six goals, blowing the final margin out to 68 points.
Leigh Lavery presented himself as a useful target for the Bulldogs, finishing with five goals; while Ryan Plant, Max Collett and Sam Tagliabue were ball magnets all day. For the Bats, Daniel McFarlane, Fearghal Purcell and Rawson Kirkhope worked hard throughout the game.

The first game involving a NEAFL reserves team was on Saturday night at Bruce Purser; when Sydney Hills Eagles played host to Wests. After an evenly contested first quarter, the Eagles broke away to establish a match-winning lead when they kicked six goals to one in the second term to lead by 36 points at half time.
The Magpies refused to drop their heads, and worked hard in the second half. Although they didn?t look like getting back into the contest, they at least won the third and fourth quarters, reducing the final margin to 12 points.
Many of the Eagles? big names from their premiership three-peat made their way into the NEAFL team, with plenty of new faces in their Premier Division team. Aaron Savage, Matthew Eastman and Joshua Shephard were listed among the Eagles? best. For the Magpies, Joshua Zoppo, Scott Lear and Clinton McGrath were influential performers.

But the news wasn?t so good for the other NEAFL reserves team. Sydney Uni?s seconds, in action against St George in a Sunday twilight game at Henson Park, were never in the hunt and were comprehensively defeated by 90 points.
Keen to make a statement from the start that they mean business in 2012, the Dragons jumped the Students, racing through seven unanswered goals while holding the Students scoreless in the opening term. The Students played better in the second term, a quarter in which the teams scored three goals apiece, with the Dragons leading by 47 points at the long break. Scoring chances dried up again for the Students, and they would manage only one scoring shot for the second half; as the final margin blew out to 90 points.
Jason Saddington, in his first game for St George, contributed six goals to the Dragon cause, while Nick Ryan weighed in with five. Ben Voight, Daniel Rixon and Reuben Bajada were among the Dragons? best. For the Students, Jacob Swarts, Aron Everett and Sam Powell worked hard all evening.

All divisions will take a break over Easter, resuming on the weekend of 14th & 15th April.
