It'd be a fantastic story if he were to succeed.

Great initiative. Love it when we do this, we have had some failures, but OS players are exciting and a real boon.

Attached is his college profile. Always wonder if Basketballers have the aggression required to make

Look forward to watching him play. Expect it will take a while
You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler

Some precident here as I reckon Port Adelaide and Collingwood both tried talls from the U.S. in the last couple of years. From memory though Port Adelaide delisted their rookie.

As for ours, bring him on! We have done well with players from left field.

    My thoughts...

He can train with the academy this year, but not with the main group. Then if we rookie him as an international rookie, he will train with the squad and be eligible to play like any rookie.

Kinnear Beatson was on SEN just before discussing Alex. He seemed quite excited. It was a case of roll the dice, nothing to lose. Everything to gain.

He said it came about as they were disapointed at the depth of mobile big men currently here in Australia, and this was an opportunity to tap into a different but large pool.

From watching vision he seems a likely type to pick it up. His kicking actually looks pretty fluid compared to early Pyke and others I have seen new to the ball. From a basketball perspective he has a nice side step ( as seen on Roo's in the swans video no less ), he helps out on defence and seems his mentality is orientated strongly this way. He reads the play well with those intercepts. It's all compressed and edited to show him off, but he seems to have some handy skills that will transfer. Namely quick thinking, quick hands, reading the play (will be an entirely different play , but at least he is capable in some fashion), and he may be a scrapper if he is down on the floor getting loose balls at his size. Also he is used to 360 degree offence and defence. Then there are his physical attributes which seems promising, and he played american football, so he can take a hit and mix it up.

Could go either way, but I admire the swans for looking outside the box with regards to the international rookie spots.

Interestingly Kinnear said they were disappointed with how the irish players since tadgh have picked up the game. So I wonder if it was more them sending the last 2 home, than them packing it in?

Looks like a good athlete, but Bethune Cookman aren't exactly a huge force in college basketball. The MEAC is one of the lower-profile Div-1 conferences, without any real nationally recognised teams. Bethune Cookman won the conference title last year, which was his last year of eligibility. He was 3rd in his team's scoring stats last year (10.7 ppg) but highest in rebounds at 6.7rpg.

I agree that the US college system is an interesting place to seek talent, but this guy seems to have been merely a good athlete in an ok team in a very mediocre conference. Hopefully we can uncover some great athletes from bigger programs in more prominent conferences, which in many ways are very close to professionally run these days.

I look forward to seeing him get a go next year if he gets picked up, but I wouldn't see it as much more than novelty value at this stage....

I think novelty value is selling short our recruiters and the club. It's a business. But still just an educated guess.

Though in regards to his credentials and who he played for, I'd place that above Jake O'real the QLD vollyballer and other players picked up with little to no competitive experience. Purely on numbers Alex would have been competing against and he obviously didn't disgrace himself.

There have been quite a few Australian basketballers who crossed over, Dean Brogan, Matty Clarke and wasn't Greg Stafford a basketballer before playing in the Sydney footy comp? Maybe he will succeed maybe not AFL clubs did a huge amount of experimenting with basketballers in the '90's and early naughties with miwed results.

He obviously isn't a real standout in terms of college hoops - he looks to be about similar to hundreds of other guys playing for the hundred-odd teams in Div-1 basketball. Not saying this won't work, but I would only get a bit excited by us picking up a real talent from one of the big schools. This guy is someone who has finished his college career and has no pro prospects in basketball, so good on him for having a go at a new sport on the other side of the world. If it gets him onto the 2013 squad as a rookie, it would be a great experience for him.

I guess I'm being a wet rag on this one, and I wish him well, but I don't see this as something to get excited over.

After the extraordinary job the big Canadian has done to make the transition who knows with this kid. It's the type of "thinking outside the box" approach I love about the Swans.

His success is by no means a slam dunk of course but his traveling here is a good sign that he's not a basket case or that there is anything foul going on.
The amount of lies men tell would decrease significantly if woman stopped asking questions.

Don't worry I understand where you are coming from with regards to this bloke, what is exciting is that it's the off season (yawn), and our club is again trying something different to sneak ahead with what limitations we have (no high draft picks, not flushed with cash).
