Round 15: Sydney Swans Reserves v Brisbane Lions Reserves

    Ticket To Ride
    NEAFL Round 15

Sydney Swans Reserves v Brisbane Lions Reserves
    Friday 28th June 2013 2.00pm
    Blacktown International Sports Park

The two teams may be on the top of their respective conferences but while the Swans are struggling with injury and have dropped their last 2 games, the Lions are in rude health and will take a 3 game winning streak into this top-of-the-table clash. The Lions have already visited Sydney once this year and came away with a solid 4 goal victory in Round 8 and will be hot favourites to make it a clean sweep at Blacktown. In a strange twist of fate, in the last 4 matches between these 2 teams, the away side has emerged the victor on all 4 occasions. The Reserves will limp into this game with only 11 fit listed players, which pales into contrast with the juggernaut that is the Brisbane lineup with around 20 listed players expected to take the field for the Lions once their team is finalised.

    R8 Brisbane Reserves 11.20 (86) defeated by Reserves 18.12 (120) @Yeronga

The Reserves travelled to Brisbane to upset the Lions who aided the Swans by being incredibly wasteful in front of goal. The Swans stormed to a 6 goal lead at quarter time and maintained a 4 goal lead at the main break and despite a couple of Lions surges in the 2nd half, confidently withstood the fusillade of shots from Brisbane to win quite comfortably. Mitch Morton continued his goal glut by bagging 8 to complement his 10 the previous week. Captain Jarred Moore dominated the stoppages yet again aided by the taps of big Canuck Mike Pyke

Goals: Morton 8 Walsh 2, Davis, Thurgarland, Spangher, Cunningham, Moody, Bosschieter, Moore, Meredith
Best: Moore, Pyke, Walsh, Cunningham, Biggs, Heath

    R16 Reserves 16.7 (103) defeated by Brisbane Reserves 17.20 (122) @ Sydney Cricket Ground

The Swans for a variety of reasons had plenty of regulars missing and a very strong Lions outfit took advantage of their absence to record a strong away win. Truth be told, if they had converted a higher number of their set shots, the game would have been over early in the 2nd half. Tommy Walsh stood up in the absence of his forward line teammates to take strong grabs, and finished with a deserved 3 goals. Brett Meredith provided plenty of run and dash from the half back line while Trent Dennis-Lane continued to impress onlookers in his new hybrid midfield-forward role.

Goals: Broome 3, Parker 3, Dennis-Lane 3, Walsh 3, Moore, Krochmal, Mitchell, Lamb
Best: Walsh, Meredith, Dennis-Lane, Heath, Plug, Parker

    R21 Brisbane Reserves 13.8 (86) defeated by Reserves 17.15 (117) @ Yeronga

The Reserves coped well without leading goalkicker Mitch Morton with his replacement Trent Dennis-Lane kicking 5 goals and the two talls Matt Spangher and Tommy Walsh 3 each. It was the impressive use of the ball by Andrejs Everitt that saw him named best on ground alongside midfield general Jarred Moore. Campbell Heath yet again led the defence superbly, blanketing the Lions tall forwards.

    Goals: Dennis-Lane 5, Spangher 3, Walsh 3, McNeil 2, Everitt 2, Cunningham Gordon
Best: Everitt, Moore, Heath, McNeil, White

1Tim MEMBREY8173(seniors emergency) Traveling emergency last week, it will be a tough but invaluable learning role against a tough Brisbane defence.
7Harry CUNNINGHAM6310Encouraging performances in his 3 games since his return, playing midfield even though a halfback spot is beckoning in the seniors.
19Tony ARMSTRONG504(seniors emergency)Will begin his third stint in the reserves after being dropped again.
22Dean TOWERS10100Played his best game as a key target up forward, could repeat that role.
23Jordan LOCKYER1113Holding down a key defensive post now, was recognised in the best list for the first time last week.
27Daniel ROBINSON1093Hasn't hit the same heights since missing the Round 11 game against Belconnen.
28Matthew DICK720Provided a much needed forward target in the 2nd half against the Thunder, but will probably shift back in Richards' absence.
31Harrison MARSH1050Had the most clearances (6) of any Swan last week, has a deceptive turn of speed.
36Alex BROWN11312Filled in as the 2nd ruckman at times last week, but that temporary may be proving detrimental to his performances in his main role.
44Jake LLOYD11826Leading possession winner yet again but mostly worked behind the ball helping out his undermanned defence.
46Shane BIGGS11115Continues to provide the run and carry out of defence, but has been working over time with the number of inside 50s being conceded.
    Changes
In: Membrey (seniors traveling emergency), Armstrong (seniors)
Out: Brandon JACK (seniors), Xavier RICHARDS (seniors emergency)

Another low number of 11 listed players and again without a recognised ruckman. Membrey will provide a target as a natural forward and expect one or both of Towers and Dick to line up in an unfamiliar forward position. The team may struggle to kick enough goals for a winning score with Brandon Jack's omission, as he has been a main source of assists in the team this year. Richards being rested will result in the likes of Lockyer, Dick or Brown having to tackle the ominously tall forwards that the Lions are bringing to this game (see below)

Weir was the ruckman in the first half last week, but was was released to roam the half-forward line in the 2nd half. Sands in his 2 games has done a passable job as the main ruckman and should resume that role again. McKinlay played off halfback last week and Dunn has played in the forward line in his previous 3 games.

Of the new players, Lycakis and Davis have played as topups in previous years, Norton is a Northern NSW Academy member and played one match last year.

While the Swans will have to struggle with a makeshift ruck division, the Lions will have the luxury calling upon 3 ruckmen who have all tasted senior football this year in Longer, Michael and Martin. There is quality all over the ground with Maguire and McKeever experienced talls in defence, Banfield, Green, Bewick, Mayes and Karnezis all very potent half-forwards and great on-ballers in Polec, Raines, Crisp, Hayes and Bartlett.

It seems as though the Lions seasoned 'A' graders are having a bit of trouble with our 11 list players and out 11 toppies. Not a huge problem by the look of it 28 points down but I think we are doing pretty well to be that close with the players they have in the reserves team.

Thanks Ugg for your reports. I have been following them on twitter, the Swans Reserves reports are good.

Agreed Tony needs to hit a player when kicking. Seems a lot of his deliveries missed by a mile...

Membrey 2nd and 3rd efforts we good and should have been in the best. IMO also..

Harry's tackling pressure was good (match fitness a little down however solid)

Lloyd tried hard all day and would be a keeper atm

Missed the key talls that are missing

It was a tough task asking an undermanned team with 11 listed players up against the Lions who were kind enough to only bring down 19 of their own instead of the full 22 that were available to them. The bigger and more mature bodies of the Lions held them in good stead, with the Swans struggling to stick enough tackles allowing the Lions to create space for their teammates with their cleaner disposal skills.

Despite all this, with the exception of the 3rd quarter and the tail end of the 4th, the Swans fought out the game well and weren't embarassed despite missing key players in key positions and losing tall topup Jordan Weir midway through the first quarter. The rain only started coming down some time through the 2nd quarter and patches of the third but the wet ground and ball were still problematic in the last quarter and both sides continually missed targets by hand and foot as the players tired out.

The Swans kicked the first goal of the third quarter to cut the margin back to 3 goals but that only sparked the Lions who dominated and through their hard running and superior skills made the Swans pay with 6 straight goals. The Swans had the better of the Lions in the last quarter but an inability to put goals on the board combined with a noticeable letdown in pressure and defensive work in the last 5 minutes allowed the Lions to pinch the last quarter by 9 points.

    • 1. Tim MEMBREY - Had to frequently push right up the ground to find the ball as we struggled to clear the ball past the halfway line. This created a lot of space in our forward line which we utilised to great effect, many of our goals resulted from the open spaces afforded to our forwards who converted the few inside 50s that came our way. Gave his original opponent Jordon Bourke such a runaround that the Lions had to swap to Niall McKeever after the first quarter. Timed his leaps very well which gave him an edge over the defenders in marking the ball, but alas he dropped a few he should have gobbled up. His recovery when the ball hit the ground was very good and his workrate in continually chasing after Lions was very impressive.
    • 7. Harry CUNNINGHAM - Our best midfielder on the day - ran tirelessly to help in defence as well as presenting as an option in attack. Both his goals came from ballups in the forward 50. The first was after the Lions kick-in taker overstepped the line and he managed to kick it despite a mass of players around the ball up area and the second was a brilliant set play where Towers came third man up to knock it to Harry's advantage running at speed. Came off in the third quarter with a grimace on his face, said something about getting hit in the guts, but after a spell on the bench to recuperate played out the rest of the game albeit not as influential as before
    • 19. Tony ARMSTRONG - Had a nightmare of a first quarter, coughed up the first goal within the first few moments of the game when his loose handball was intercepted by the Lions. Compounded his error later in the quarter by collecting Newell in a head high tackle and then gave away a 50m penalty for what I assume must have been abuse/dissent. He was heavily targetted by the Lions with a few defensive forwards rotated through him and clearly with the instruction to drag him back to the goalsquare and away from the action. The defensive six scrambled well throughout most of the day but seemed to have little cohesion when they did win the ball back with a lot of hurried kicks and stray handballs in the defensive 50 putting all defenders including Armstrong under immense pressure. I thought he did well to put his body on the line and compete in such trying circumstances but I remained unconvinced by his ball use under pressure.
    • 22. Dean TOWERS - Played exclusively at full forward for most of the day, with Membrey up the ground, he was usually the furthest Swan forward with usually more than one Lion keeping him company. Only really came to the fore in the last quarter when the Swans started to win more of the possession and territory. He led and presented well and was rewarded with 2 goals - one from a mark and one from a free kick after he was held while going for a mark. He seemed to have a running battle with Bourke in the last quarter, both getting in each other's face and Towers foolishly giving away a free kick 80m away from where the ball was leading to a Brisbane shot on goal.
    • 23. Jordan LOCKYER - His first half was as good a game as I've seen from him. Rotated through a few opponents - Close, Cornelius and Michael all of whom are noticeably bigger than him, but his intensity and determination to win contests saw him snuff out many attacks from the Lions. Second half clearly saw a drop in his intensity, hallmarked by a very lackadaisical, floaty kick from the back pocket which gave Josh Green ample time to spoil against a staionary Swan and goal as a result.
    • 27. Daniel ROBINSON - First half was matched up against the highly impressive Sam Mayes, who I believe only played one half, and in the second half was in the mix against the likes of Crisp, O'Brien and Green. His calmness under pressure and assuredness of his disposal was the standout in a team that was continually harried by a marauding Brisbane defence.
    • 28. Matthew DICK - Back in defence, again had a few opponents but mainly was on Aaron Cornelius who has done very well against us in previous games, when we have had stronger line ups. Did reasonably well but was outmuscled on a few ocassions by the stronger Cornelius.
    • 31. Harrison MARSH - A few pieces of play were impressive, took a strong grab from a Karnezis kick across goal and converted the resultant set shot. Tackled well and matched up well against the well stocked Brisbane midfield. Also on display was some quick acceleration to break away from packs but they were few and far between.
    • 36. Alex BROWN - Mainly on the resting ruckman and gave away significant height and weight advantages. Wasn't embarassed but there were contests where he couldn't make much impact upon. Didn't figure as much in offence as we're used to, mainly due to his opponent was often the last man back in defence.
    • 44. Jake LLOYD - The Lions obviously did their homework because they assigned Andrew Raines, who has tagged some of the AFL's best onballers, to quell Lloyd who has been probably our best reserves player in the past month or so. While he wasn't as influential as in recent outings, he still kept working hard despite the close attention of Raines who was doubled over out of breath after coming off late in the 4th quarter whilst Lloyd still looked quite fresh.
    • 46. Shane BIGGS - Matched up on the smaller forwards in the likes of Green, Banfield or Bartlett, did an effective job without starring. Could offer more going forward but didn't seem to run as hard or often enough as I would have liked. Needs to offer more than doing just the requisite work, and perhaps provide a bit of leadership in this inexperienced team.

Topups - Jordan Weir was the desginated second ruck but he injured a shoulder late in the first quarter after being driven into the ground whilst being tackled (no malice). That meant that Levi Sands had to ruck for the rest of the game, up against the giants Billy Longer and Sam Michael. There were plenty of ballups where Sands didn't even bother to get his hands up for it would have been futile to attempt to touch the ball ahead of the longer reach of the Lions' duo. His work was more effective when the ball hit the ground due to his mobility although he does have an unorthodox kicking action.

David Lycakis was lively as one of the few forward options for the Swans, managed to use his pace to get to a loose ball and kick a much needed goal. Also used in defence in the 2nd half. Stephen Wray was mainly utilised in the midfield, played relatively well, showed some clever skills and manouevres to beat a few would be tacklers.

Of the 'new' topups, Nicolas Shaw was probably the best of the lot. Skinny lad but could read the play and make good decisions. Matthew Vicic and Brendan Norton were taller but of a more raw stock than Shaw and will need a lot of polish. Vicic received a free kick just before the first bounce in the 2nd quarter and had a 45m set shot directly in front but executed a poor kick that didn't register even a behind.

Finally, I have to mention the role that Rhyce Shaw played on the sidelines. Even though he was holding a walkie-talkie he never used it once, he even said to someone in the crowd "I have no idea how this works" with a shrug of the shoulders. He was part-coach, part-motivator, part-heckler ("HOT HOT HOT" to a Lions player with no one near him), part umpire-abuser, and part-jokester with Gary Rohan who was one of the runners (Rhyce: "Looks like you've lost a bit of pace Gaz" Rohan: "Still faster than you old man").

The main themes I took out of his messages were:
    - we should always have a defender as the last man back. i.e. do not allow an opposition forward to be stationed goalside of you, AND if you are that man you should be aware of it.
    - man up at the stoppages do not allow them to have an extra body there.
    - kept imploring Armstrong not to get dragged back to the goalsquare, and if his opponent was trying to do so, he should find someone else to mark further up the ground and tell his teammate currently marking him to swap.
    - frequently encouraged Membrey (YOURS TIMMY! CONTEST!) to lead up to the wings to give a marking contest whenever we used the kick up the line as our get-out option (which was quite often).
    - shouted at the defenders to run up the ground (YOU'VE GOT TO GO NOW!) to be options when we were transitioning from defence to attack.
    - very encouraging to the toppies when they went in hard or made a good play.
    - also a cryptic message to Harrison Marsh - 10 MINUTES MARSHY 10 MINUTES! - which was repeated quite often.

Next week the Reserves travel to Newcastle on the Saturday to face the Eastlake Demons, who should have a few ex-Swans in their squad.

Thanks ugg. Great work in difficult conditions.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
