    Academy players nominate for draft

Swans Academy players Mitch Crawford, James Dunn, Harrison Green, Jack Hiscox, Yaran Jaffer-Williams, Jackson Pola-Smith, Errol Sertbas, Jordan Weir and Stephen Wray have nominated for the draft. We can pick these guys up in a similar manner to FS selections. Any of them worth a punt?

We are able to nominate one (at least) as a NSW rookie, as we did with Brandon Jack last year. Not sure if that's also how we got Xavier Richards.

Just read an article. There is a similar process to father/son in place where we can nominate one and if another club bids for them we can get them with our pick following that of the club bidding.

Weren't they both just drafted via the regular rookie draft?

All of them have turned out for the Swans reserves at least once this year. Weir and Wray are over-agers (ie they were eligible last year). Both have been regulars with the reserves, and while they have made solid contributions, I don't think they've stood out in the way they possibly needed to, given they are a year older than most. I have a feeling Crawford might be another in that group too.

YJW has been eye catching at times. He's a very small, indigenous lad who has definitely grown in confidence as he's gotten more game time with the reserves. He picked up a NEAFL RS nomination a couple of weeks ago. He's quick - though not Jetta or Rohan quick, can shark a goal and his propensity to chase and tackle has improved as the year has gone on.

JPS has only played the one game that I've seen, and didn't get much game time. He's a tallish lad (mid to high 180s cm tall) and skinny as a rake. I mean seriously skinny. Looks like a Bambi still trying to come to terms with the length of his limbs. Despite looking a little nervous in the one game I saw of him, he did a couple of impressive things - took one very nice contested mark and kicked a goal from tight on the boundary. There was an article about him a year or two ago on the Swans' website- his father used to play for Richmond.

Dunn is another I've taken notice of a few times. If I'm thinking of the right player, he's quite small but tough as nails and hasn't looked out of place at NEAFL level.

Richards was, but Jack was taken as a NSW rookie priority selection but only after passed over in the draft. We don't have the ability to put Academy players directly onto the rookie list before the National Draft (as you could with a scholarship player, but only if they agreed to it). We have to wait and give other clubs a chance to draft them in the National Draft if we don't want to nominate them as a ND pick-up ourselves.

Is that a definitive list? How about Perris, or is he out very last NSW scholarship holder?

According to the draft rules Liz we can preselect an Academy player in the pre-season or Rookie Drafts.

    Academy Pre-Selected
    Player Nominations
A Club may include one or more eligible
academy players on its rookie list during the
period between the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft
Selection Meeting and the start of the NAB
AFL Rookie Draft Selection Meeting, provided
    that the requirements are fulfilled.
    New South Wales and
    Queensland-Based Clubs
A Club based in the NSW or Queensland
metropolitan area may include one or more
players on its Rookie List during the period
between the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft
Selection Meeting and the start of the
NAB AFL Rookie Draft Selection Meeting,
provided that the requirements are fulfilled.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but what you've quoted above says, we can only place an academy player on our rookie list AFTER the preseason draft ( and therefore also after the ND).

ie: We get first dibs at them, before the Rookie draft only.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

If these kids are good enough to go in the regular draft we won't get a chance to rookie them.
