    TLM Countdown - Rnds 16-17, 2013

Today's rounds are brough to you by Liz.

Round 16:Sydney 24.27.171 def GWS 5.12.42 at the SCG

Eschewing the 'Battle of the Bridge' Sheedyism, the Swans instead chose to host the second Sydney Derby, and the first at the SCG. Lopsided contests can bring pleasure to fans of the winning side, as they enjoy seeing their team grind the opposition into the ground. But this one was something of a snorefest from start to finish. The Swans were far from a well-oiled machine but couldn't help racking up possessions in a game that demonstrated just how far off the pace the Giants are in the AFL competition.

The Swans' conversion was wasteful throughout, but never more than in the first quarter. They managed seven behinds - including Brandon Jack running clear into an open goal and ramming the ball against the post - before Tippett got his finger tips to a Hampton kick out and sent the ball back over Curtly's head.

Jeremy Cameron did his best to provide some forward line highlights to the travelling band of 23 Giants fans, but by the end he was to find himself back in defence, playing on White.

McVeigh and Malceski roamed around the half-back line all afternoon with no apparent opponents, while JPK and Hannebery also found plenty of the ball - the latter assisted by McGlynn's first quarter whack to Scully's head. This would earn Benny a three week holiday from the tribunal but he thumbed his nose at them by sustaining a decent hamstring injury before they could hand down their verdict.

Round 17:Sydney 17.11.113 def West Coast 11.13.79 at Subiaco Oval

For the seemingly gazillionth consecutive season, the Swans were drawn to play West Coast in the West. But this is a fixture the Swans have come to enjoy, establishing a dominant run of victories over the Weagles since the mid-noughties rivalry faded into memory.

The first quarter was a tight affair. The home side took an early lead before the Swans pegged them back to have their noses in front at quarter time. The Sydney midfield started to turn the screws after the first break, applying pressure that West Coast couldn't handle, and running them off their feet. Still, the Sydney forward line was at its dysfunctional norm and, for a while, they struggled to turn their dominance into scores. Lamb and Parker finally got things going when, in the space of a couple of minutes, each one wheeled around a couple of opponents and let fly with Nick Davis like snaps. A six goal to two score line for the quarter was reasonable reward for the visitors.

Following low scoring third quarter, the Eagles started the final term with a bang and the Swans were forced to wake up from their slumber. Enter substitute Harry Cunningham for his first game for the year. His first touch of the game directed the Sherrin squarely onto Tippett's chest, and any suggestion that the Eagles would stage an unlikely comeback was effective squashed.

JPK was influential both early and late, Hanners racked up over 40 possessions, Jack popped up everywhere, while McVeigh was classy. Jesse was influential playing up the ground, while Pyke marked everything in sight. This was also something of a break-out game for young Lamb, who used the ball creatively and contributed a couple of goals.

Although the majority are dissapointed that Jesse has gone, it is interesting that he has yet to poll a vote in this prestigious award.

With only 6 rounds to go, will he poll a vote?

At this stage, he is the only tall forward not to poll a vote.
