Round 1: Brisbane Lions Reserves v Sydney Swans Reserves @ Gabba

    NEAFL 2014 Round 1

Brisbane Lions Reserves v Sydney Swans Reserves

    Sunday 30th March 2014 3.15pm (Brisbane time)
    'Gabba

Reserves football finally makes its way back to the Gabba, with this match to be played after the conclusion of the Brisbane Lions v Geelong Cats AFL match. A rematch of last year's NEAFL Grand Final, both teams are greatly changed due to the departures of numerous fringe players. The Lions' losses mostly consisted of disgruntled youngsters such as Jared Polec (Port Adelaide), Billy Longer (St Kilda), Sam Docherty (Carlton) and Patrick Karnezis (Collingwood) departing Brisbane during trade week. These players formed a solid core of the Lions' successful reserves team last year. While their replacements are highly regarded youngsters, it will take some time before they can fully fill their predecessor's shoes.

The Swans also lost depth players such as Andrejs Everitt (Carlton), Jesse White (Collingwood), Mitch Morton (retired), Jed Lamb (GWS) and Tony Armstrong (Collingwood) although the first two spent the last half of last season in the seniors. Coach Jared Crouch will be looking to second year players such as Jake Lloyd, Daniel Robinson, Tim Membrey, Harry Marsh and Matthew Dick to step up and be more prominent members of the team this year.

The main change in the NEAFL for 2014 is that the 2 conferences have been merged into one, with teams Tuggeranong, Morningside, Broadbeach, Labrador and Mt. Gravatt making way in a more streamlined competition. From the Swans' POV nothing much has changed as the team will only play AFL reserves sides + the NT Thunder from the north during the regular season and can only meet the other Northern sides in finals matchups.

1Tim MEMBREY000Had a poor game in the UWS practice match being beaten by Lachie Plowman. Swans' best in the GF.
10Zak JONES000Spent time both in the midfield and defence in the practice match.
11Jeremy LAIDLER000(senior emergency) Unlucky to be omitted from the seniors after a promising Swans senior debut.
13Toby NANKERVIS000Moves well for a big man, kicked goals in his junior career.
22Dean TOWERS000(senior emergency) Quiet game in the practice match.
23Jordan LOCKYER000A much improved defensive player from the last time last year, will need to stand up against the highly credentialed Lions young talls.
27Daniel ROBINSON000Retained his place on the rookie list after a impressive first year at the club culminated in his selection in the NEAFL Eastern Team of the Year
28Matthew DICK000General defender who can play on the smalls and talls.
29George HEWETT000Youngest Swan on the list, will be an inside midfielder in the future.
31Harrison MARSH000Much was made of his preseason improvement, Swans looking to him in an inside midfield role.
33Brandon JACK000(senior emergency)Made great strides last year in his personal development, now on the senior list.
35Sam NAISMITH000Will be looking to make up for lost time after missing most of last year due to injury.
36Aliir ALIIR000Impressed against GWS with his spoiling and poise.
    41Lloyd PERRIS000Impressive performances as a top-up last year.
42Xavier RICHARDS000Leader of the backline who generally takes the opposition's best forward.
44Jake LLOYD000Easily the Reserves' most consistent performer last year, polling in 17 of the 20 games he played.
45Patrick MITCHELL000Very raw but very athletic, will probably spend most time forward with short spells in the ruck.

Heeney is expected to be drafted by the Swans later this year as a member of our Academy, has already played as a topup last year and impressed. Weir is a tallish flanker type who can fill in holes at either end of the ground. Hiscox is an eliter runner who is a member of the NSW/ACT RAMS who also played as a topup last year. McCaffrey is the only new face - he kicked 2 goals for the RAMS in a practice match against Murray just last week

The majority of Brisbane's new draftees will be on show including the likes of tall defenders Gardiner, McStay and midfielders Cutler and Robertson who were all drafted in the first 2 rounds of the AFL draft. The experience will be provided by the likes of Maguire, Raines, Harwood and Crisp while ex-Collingwood forward Paine will be looking to impress after being named as an emergency for their senior side this week.

You could argue there are 22 spots up for grabs on last nights performance...

Thanks ugg - fantastic effort on your behalf!

I really hope Lockyer improves this year, I was very impressed the only time I saw him play and feel he could play a role for us this year.

Towers needs to take his chance here he turns 24 soon and time is against him.

I said almost the same thing to my nephew walking to the bus last night. Any of the ressies watching that game from their hotel room in Brisbane would have turned off the light knowing they needed a big one tomorrow...

I'd like to hear that Membrey really puts his hand up for senior selection with a strong performance today. I reckon there's a spot in the firsts for a lead-up forward before Tippett comes back - even if he doesn't have Kurt's size, he's a solid mark on the lead and a very good set shot. We could use another target up forward at the moment....

Any more scores? No twitter feed from either Swans or Lions. Over the Swans on many levels at the moment. Media is putrid. Coaching stinks and we stink as a footy team at mo. Hope the Twos can rescue the situation.
