Practice Match: Sydney Swans Reserves v UWS Giants

    Blacktown International Sports Park
    Saturday 21st June 2014
    4.00pm

Swans sit on top of the NEAFL ladder with UWS 4 points behind on 2nd. It's an interesting matchup as both sides clash again for NEAFL premiership points next week.

Not an official NEAFL match so it's unlikely we'll get team sheets. A possible lineup (assuming all 3 emergencies play), taking into account the latest injury list:
    • 1. Tim MEMBREY (seniors emergency)
    • 5. Ryan O'KEEFE
    • 13. Toby NANKERVIS (seniors emergency)
    • 16. Gary ROHAN (seniors emergency)
    • 17. Tommy WALSH
    • 18. Jordan LOCKYER
    • 27. Daniel ROBINSON
    • 28. Matthew DICK
    • 29. George HEWETT
    • 30. Lewis ROBERTS-THOMSON (listed as calf Test - likely NEAFL)
    • 31. Harrison MARSH (listed as hamstring Test)
    • 35. Sam NAISMITH
    • 36. Aliir ALIIR (listed as toe Test)
    • 41. Lloyd PERRIS
    • 45. Patrick MITCHELL
    • 46. Shane BIGGS

    In: Aliir, Marsh, Roberts-Thomson, Rohan
    Out: Mike PYKE

Up to 9 topups have been named
    • Joel BOTTIN-NOONAN
    • Jack CAMPBELL
    • Michael DICKSON
    • Harry DOBSON
    • Nick FOSTER
    • Tom McCAFRREY
    • Oscar OSBORNE
    • Vahid ROSER
    • Oli WETZLAR

    In: Dobson, Foster, McCaffrey, Wetzlar
Out: Tom DICKSON, Harrison GREEN, Nicholas HEY, Jack PARKER

    Possible UWS lineup
    • 11. Jed LAMB
    • 15. Tim GOLDS
    • 21. Matt BUNTINE
    • 24. Jono O'ROURKE
    • 25. Cam McCARTHY
    • 26. Jonathan GILES
    • 27. Andrew PHILLIPS
    • 28. Liam SUMNER
    • 29. Zac WILLIAMS
    • 30. Lachie PLOWMAN
    • 31. Jacob TOWNSEND
    • 36. James STEWART
    • 37. Rory LOBB
    • 42. Mark WHILEY
    • 43. Jake BARRETT
    • 44. Tom DOWNIE
    • 45. Sam SCHULZ
    • 46. Dylan ADDISON
    • 50. Sam REID

Don't forget that the RAMS are playing NT at 12.50; you can get a glimpse of Heeney, Davis and Mills.

Three quarter time. Swans up by a few points thanks to Membray and lousy goal kicking by the giants.

Swans by 13 in a game largely dominated around the ground by the Giants. Swans simply took their opportunities much better when they arose.

Liz, what's your opinion on Nankervis and Membrey coming into the senior side? Do you think they're ready yet?

I believe they are ready. They have been showing similar if not better form to Jones and he has shown he is more than up to it. As Lloyd and Cunningham have done before.

The Longmire inspired Swans are starting to play AFL like the Italians play Soccer. Excellent all round defence, absorb plenty of pressure, very disciplined, then absolutely deadly on the quick counter-attack to World Class finishers.

The Swans lose all KPIs except tackling, and still a win. It's s master system and will change the AFL game.

Did Membrey and Toby N put in good defensive pressure today. Did they get some tackles away? Were they able to force the GWS defence into some rushed possessions?

    Swans 2.3 7.5 8.5 11.5 (71)
    Giants 4.4 5.7 6.13 7.16 (58)

Swans Goals: Membrey 5, Robinson 2, Marsh 2, Perris, Dobson, Wetzlar
Giants Goals: Giles 2, Addison 2, Townsend, Mudge, Reid

4 goals straight to 2.9 in the second half says it all really. Reminiscent of one of the earlier Swans-Giants NEAFL matches earlier this year except that time the Giants got their act together in the final quarter to nick it, no repeat of that today.

Swans down a man for basically the whole game after Hewett was smashed in the first bounce. Hard to be confident of who the culprit was as it was (slightly) off the ball but the Giants' two hard men Townsend and Reid were in the vicinity. Not sure whether suspensions can be issued in a practice match such as this though. It not only affected the interchange rotations but also our midfield rotations too because ROK was not playing (guessing rested?) and T.Mitchell still out injured that meant players such as Marsh, Perris, Membrey and even Rohan in the lats quarter had to fill in.

From the list I posted at the beginning, Xavier and ROK didn't play for us and Lobb, Schulz and Barrett didn't for UWS.

As for the RAMS game I only caught the last 15 minutes or so, and the RAMS were cruising and eventually won by 80 or so points. The people I spoke to who watched the whole shebang said that Heeney collected many possessions again despite playing forward a lot, and Davis was shifted to the backline to battle against a troublesome opponent. Mills, Fyffe and Hiscox also prominent from the Swans Academy contingent.

5 goals to Membrey again. I suppose the selectors are concerned about his fitness at the higher level and the need for him to spend time on the bench recuperating.

There was an article about the game on the AFL app (can't find it on their web site) saying that Heeney had 20-odd (IIRC) possessions in the first half when the game was up for grabs and was generally excellent.
Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way you'll be a mile away and he'll be shoeless.
