THE KANGAROOS recorded their first win of the pre-season yesterday but were dealt a blow with livewire forward Daniel Motlop damaging a shoulder.

Motlop left the field nursing his left shoulder after falling heavily halfway through the second quarter of the practice game against Sydney at Optus Oval, which the Kangaroos won by 23 points.

The Kangaroos could ill-afford to lose Motlop, who emerged as a prospective star last season.

"He's just gone in (into hospital) for a scan now so we'll probably know later tonight," Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley said.

But even with Motlop off the ground, the Roos looked reasonably potent up forward with new face Chad Jones working well with Corey Jones and Drew Petrie.

"I thought Chad Jones in his first game of AFL footy was particularly good," Laidley said.

"He just adds a bit of difference. He's tall but he's quick and agile and he's a bit different from Corey and Drew or Brown who was up there at some stage."

Chad Jones, an athletic 19-year-old from Claremont, kicked two goals and helped the Roos take control of the game in the second quarter.

Scores were level at the first change but the Kangaroos kicked five goals to three in the second term to lead by 14 points at the main break.

The Swans moved the ball well late in the third quarter and were back in the game through two goals to Barry Hall and another to Jarrad Sundqvist from a petty 50m penalty against Glenn Archer for not returning the ball quickly enough.

But former Bomber Shane Harvey steered through a banana kick on the siren to restore the Kangaroos' buffer before an almost meaningless last quarter.

The win was the Kangaroos' first after a Wizard Cup loss to Melbourne and last week's draw against Hawthorn.

There were also encouraging signs for Sydney, which had ruckman Jason Ball get through his first game since he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in round 17 last year. But experienced defender Andrew Schauble left the ground with a hamstring injury.

Corey Jones (two goals) was also among the Kangaroos' best with small forward Daniel Harris, ruckman David Hale and captain Adam Simpson.

Injury-prone tall Heath James impressed for Sydney along with Hall (three goals), Paul Williams and key defender Jason Saddington.

Sydney rested Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes and regulars Michael O'Loughlin, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Ben Mathews, Daniel Wells and Ben Fixter.

The Kangaroos were without star rover Brent Harvey, Leigh Colbert, Shane Clayton, Jess Sinclair and ruckman Mark Porter.

Missed that recruiting coup in the off-season!

I would say that the reporting is in warm up mode also. Hopefully that they get their collective reporting butts into gear soon.....
