Round 15: Belconnen Magpies v Sydney Swans Reserves

    NEAFL 2014 Round 15

Belconnen Magpies v Sydney Swans Reserves

    Saturday 12th July 2014
    12.00pm
    Kippax Oval

A rematch of the now defunct NEAFL Eastern Conference Grand Final. The Magpies have struggled after losing last year's playing coach Matt Lokan who was influential both on and off the field, taking the Magpies from the bottom of the ladder in 2011 to their GF appearance last year. New coach Jeremy Rowe has also struggled to replace 2012 Mulrooney Medalist and gun small forward Shane Harris, with the Magpies only ahead of Eastlake on the points scored tally.

The Swans finally cede their position on top of the ladder to the rampaging UWS Giants who followed up their defeat of the Reserves with a 127 demolition of the depleted Brisbane Lions Reserves. With injuries hitting both seniors and reserves players, only 13 listed players took the field in Wollongong last week, and thanks to some amazing individual efforts by Biggs, Tom Mitchell and Towers the Swans managed to sneak home by 6 points against the valiant Ainslie team. With a tough run home (the next 4 games following this one include the 3 other AFL Reserves sides and the dreaded NT road trip) the Swans need to win this game to consolidate their place in the Top 6.

    Changes
    In: Derickx, Hewett, Richards
Out: Tim MEMBREY (senior emergency), Tom MITCHELL (knee soreness), Toby NANKERVIS (finger), Dean TOWERS (seniors)

The list takes a further hit this week through a mixture of injury and senior duty. Membrey will stay in Sydney as the emergency for the Carlton game, Tom Mitchell has been ruled out through knee soreness, Nankervis hurt his finger in the Ainslie game while Towers gets a long-awaited senior debut. The lineup is thankfully boosted by the return of the 2 emergencies from last week and Xavier Richards having missed the past 4 games.

The absence of the top 3 goalkickers this year (Membrey 37, Nanka 24, Towers 11) should see a reshuffled forward line with the resting ruck Naismith/Derickx and possibly one of Walsh, LRT or even Richards moving forward to fill in the gaps alongside Patty Mitchell.

With the conclusion of the U18 carnival the Reserves will now be blessed by the presence of players from the championship winning side. Of particular interest will be the Swans Reserves debut for bottom-ager Callum Mills who has already been touted as a top draft pick for next year's draft. Foote and Hiscox both impressed earlier in the year while Abe Davis has also been mooted as a possible Swans pick up in this year's draft.

The Magpies will also be able to call upon some NSW/ACT RAMS starlets this week, and the biggest starlet of them all is Jack Steele. The Giants academy member won U18 All-Australian selection as well as claiming the MVP award for the RAMS and has also played 2 topup games for the Giants this year. The other is young tall defender Logan Austin.

The Bennett boys remain the star players of this side and ably backed up by on-ballers Harper and Turnbull.

it will be fascinating to watch Jack Hiscox again this week. Jack has improved a lot this season. He has always had a very very very fast lead and in the under18s game vs QLD he took some cracking marks atleast 4 of them at blistering pace. His disposal was much better in the NSW/ACT vs QLD game compared to back in Jan Feb this year

    - Jack runs around 9mins 30 seconds for 3km which is elite !
    - I believe he runs 2.74 sec for 20m and the DRAFT record is 2.73 i believe !!
    - in my opinion Jck is worth persisting with as he is quite a dangerous outside player and suited to the current game and rules re contact etc

AND for those who have not watched Callum Mills you are in for a treat. I was very impressed by him vs QLD in the div 2 champs. He is silky smooth with his disposals and his work ethic i would argue is just as dominant for his age as Heeney........... and Callum is not eligible for the draft for another 12months

our mids havent been half bad the last few years have they:

    Hannes
    Parker
    Mitchell
    Robinson
    BJack
    lloyd
    Cunningham
    Jones
    Hewett
    Perris

and most likely the next two years

    Heeney 2014
    Mills 2015

Given Hiscox' speed and Longmire's obsession with speed, I can imagine the club potentially being interested in him. He is a hard worker and knows how to use his attributes. In his NEAFL games he's been guilty of trying to do too much - ie he'll stream down the wing taking several bounces but then try to kick a goal wide on the edge of the 50m arc at top speed, a skill most seasoned AFL players would struggle to execute. But I can't see any reason why this kind of decision making can't be addressed with coaching.

He's very 'outside' at the moment but still puts his head over the ball when he needs to. It's an interesting package of attributes given the way the game is heading at the moment.

Jack sounds like he would fit right in to "John Longmire Football". He is quick and can put on lots of forward pressure. If he can consistently give John 8 tackles a game he may be able to get on the rookie list and then the senior team after that.

Matt80, enough with your nauseating obsession with tackling. Whilst no one is doubting the importance of tackling in football, you win football games by kicking goals. If the only criteria used to pick players is how many tackles they make a game, then our recruiting success will go down the toilet very quickly.

Did we play the Seniors emergencies or not? If not we only had 12 listed player. That is very light on.
