An interesting discussion with Terry Wallace on SEN this afternoon.
He was talking about Frawley leaving Melbourne due to free agency and what compensation they would be due. The comment was made that if Malceski went to Melbourne then the Dees may lose any compo as they may be deemed to have come out even a la Carlton last year losing Betts but gaining Thomas.
There is a way around this. If they actually trade for Malceski then they would get a compensation pick for Frawley, which would probably be the pick immediately after their first pick. This would mean they would provably have picks 2 and 3, or 3 and 4.
Now, if the swans don't trade Malceski and lose him to free agency then we would probably only get a 2nd round pick which means we get the next pick after our original 2nd round pick which at this stage would probably be around the 40 mark.
Here is the rub. If Melbourne don't want to risk losing their compensation pick for Frawley then they will have to trade for Malceski. They won't trade their picks 2-4 but they will probably trade their 2nd round pick which would be very early 20s.
If we lose Malceski for pick 20 then I would take that in a flash.

If it does look as though Mal will leave, we should try to package Mal and Bird together for a first round pick. If it's Melbourne, it would effectively be trading the 2 for Frawley, except that we would get and early first round pick instead of the player. That would seem a fair trade and work well for both clubs. We could use the pick to get a much needed quality KPP prospect. It would also open up an inside mid spot for Mitchell.

The spoiler in this deal is the pre-season draft. If Melbourne finished last they could pick off either Bird or Mal for no cost.

Bird has stated he wants to stay...The Swans will no doubt want to keep him....A deal will be worked out, in due course.

Talk of him being traded is fodder.....IMO

Bird is only human...if someone threw some decent money at him it would be hard to knock back...couldn't imagine us being able to offer him anything overly substantial!

Stephen Allender. We traded him to Hawthorn at the end of 1983. He wore 14 for us.

Where has that come from Reg? Do you have the link to an article?

I'd prefer him going there than Victoria

That was just Mike Rucci, the dozy Tiser reporter, quoting some random rumours as an argument for transparency on player payments. Absolutely nothing in it.
