Nick Malceski eyes move to Melbourne Demons

SYDNEY premiership player Nick Malceski could be heading to the Demons next year if he is @unable to reach agreement on his future with the Swans.

The unrestricted free agent is believed to have the interest of his former coach Paul Roos, with Melbourne set to pounce via the free agency window as the Demons continue their rebuild.

Melbourne are keen to offset the potential loss of free agent James Frawley, who will almost certainly be playing elsewhere next season, with Hawthorn and Geelong understood to be the current frontrunners. With Frawley?s management drastically dropping down on price to what was his @initial asking rate five months ago to shift, the only stumbling block now facing potential new clubs is the length of his next contract.
After re-signing on a one-year extension in May last year, Malceski?s financial demands to stay a Swan are understood to have initially been out of reach of the Swans, but both parties have since compromised.
Sydney?s star-studded list needs some salary cap relief, which will be largely accommodated by the retirements later this year of dual premiership players Ryan O?Keefe and Lewis Roberts-Thomson.

Former captain and free agent Adam Goodes will decide at the end of the season whether to have his contract extended by another year. The Swans are understood to be extremely close to announcing a new deal for out of contract ruckman Mike Pyke, who has this year assumed the role as the club?s No 1 follower.

And talks have begun on new deals for out-of-contract pair Craig Bird and Rhyce Shaw after Harry Cunningham last month agreed to a two-year extension.

If he can squeeze more cash out of the Demons then good for him.

    We'll always have 2012

I think he would find playing at Melbourne disappointing

Say it ain't so Mal. My favourite player of the last 10 years I'd hate to see him wear another club's colours, especially now that he's playing the best footy of his career

Uh oh. I guess Roos was always going to get someone.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

He's already collected Stone, Mathews, McPherson, Allison, Misson and Terlich!

Pridham should start lobbying the AFL to limit the number of ex-players/staff employed at one club to 7.

I hadn't even thought of the coaching staff!

Mathews and McPherson.....what wonderful recruiting coups. Since that happened I have had a rather empty feeling.

It's highly unlikely he would go to Melbourne. This would mean their compensation pick for Frawley leaving would be affected and they would not get a first round pick for him.
Malceski at 30 years of age will not be interested in going to a bottom club for a rebuild. Salary cap space of over 750k will become available once O'keefe and LRT announce their retirements. Mal and his manager are holding off until they know the exact direction of the guys who are retiring.

People assume that the retirements of ROK and LRT will free up salary cap space. I disagree. They are both not contracted next year and I don?t think the club was planning for ROK to be playing AFL Football at 34 and an injury ravished LRT to be playing at 31 or 32.

Malceski going could be the best thing for the Swans.

Rohan and Jones are ready to make an impact at AFL level of the half back line. McVeigh could spend some time down back as well as Mitchell, Lloyd, Heeney and Hewitt make progress towards playing more time in the midfield.

Who knows what the club has done Matt80, you may be right. But they may also have budgeted for one of them too.

I do agree we have plenty of options however if we lose Mal.

If they are not contracted for next year then wouldn't that free up salary cap on this years cap? Makes sense to me. Goodes, LRT, ROK & Rhyce all have contracts ending this year. If they all decide to retire then salary cap room is there to recruit other players and increase wages for existing players. I see what you are saying but at this stage I am sure Goodes and Shaw are both factored into next years cap. LRT & ROK wouldn't be as they are basically retired already, they just don't know it yet. I don't know if ROK will get too many offers from other clubs, Melbourne or Saints maybe, more as a good role model than anything.

I think Mal will go, especially if we win the big one. I think he is looking to his future and Sydney probably won't be able to match an offer from Melbourne, Saints, Bullies etc. We also have several players we have been developing to take his role when he retires or leaves so it won't be panic stations. As to Frawley coming here forget it, we don't need him. I think he a soft and we don't need a soft key defender. Watched him tackle a key forward about 2 weeks ago and it was pathetic. The forward broke the tackle far too easily. I would rather develop the backs we have and also draft some newbies for development. We develop players better than most and our development players are starting to win games for us. Parker, Rohan, Membrey, Towers, BJ, Mitchell, Rampe, Harry, Lloydy, Birdie, Macca, Kizza, Reidy, Jetts, Reg, Hannas, Mal, Jones, Tommy Walsh, LRT, ROK, Smithy & Pykie are all players developed by the Swans not bought from another club. Kennedy, Benny, Teddy, Tip & Buddy are the only players who came here as already developed talent.

By the way I would like to add after seeing Tommy Walsh play FB this week, don't write big Tommy off just yet. He played a super game in the Twos. I have been saying for 2 years we should be playing this bloke back. The coaches did it a few times when we had a monster forward to tackle but then kept moving him forward, even though he plays really well back. He is proving to be a very good defender. A bit like the Reg story, came to the Swans as a forward, ends up at FB or CHB.
