    TLM Countdown 2014, Rounds 5-6

Round 5:Sydney 13.13.92 def Fremantle 11.9.75 at the SCG

The Swans backed up at the SCG in round 5, granted an opportunity for immediate redemption in front of a home crowd still adoring but with patience beginning to wear thin. The team had been through a week of soul searching, so we were told. This was season-on-the-line stuff. Unfortunately they were up against a quality opponent in Freo. The 2013 grand finalists were themselves desperately trying to find some consistency of form. They werent going to simply roll over.

From the first bounce the Swans appetite for tackling, chasing and harassing was evident. The skill level lagged someway behind, but at least it was a start. The frequent turnovers made scoring tricky; it took until nearly quarter time for the Swans to score their first goal. But the Dockers werent able to capitalise on the multitude of turnover opportunities with they were presented. Whenever they got a clear sight at goal, Teddy Richards or Dane Rampe was guarding the way.

As the game progressed, both teams gradually found their rhythm and thus ways to goal. But despite the Swans superior pressure and semblance of midfield control, they struggled to convert this into scores. The connection between midfield and forward line was always a little frayed, and it took until the third quarter before Franklin found his mojo. Three Buddy goals in that term looked like it might have set up a match winning lead but Fremantle never gave up the chase.

Maybe memories of Fremantles charge in the final quarter of the previous years corresponding fixture played on the Swans minds as the last term got underway. Or maybe it was just a lingering sign of this years early fragility. Suddenly they looked nervous and unsure. Three purple goals in quick succession had the lead down to just 15 points and every supporter chewing on their knuckles. But the home side buckled down, regained some semblance of equilibrium through the middle, and looked to be just one goal away from sealing it. That goal never came, but the siren finally did, and the home crowd could breathe a sigh of relief.

Goals: Franklin 4, McGlynn 2, Malceski, Kennedy, McVeigh, Roberts-Thomson, Parker, B Jack, Jetta
Brownlow Medal votes: 3 - Kennedy (Syd), 2 - McGlynn (Syd), 1 Fyfe (Fre)
Bob Skilton Medal votes: Kennedy 41, McGlynn 40, Rampe 40, K Jack 36, McVeigh 36.

    5 Josh Kennedy
    4 Dane Rampe
    3 Ben McGlynn
    2 Lance Franklin
    1 Ted Richards

    Round 6 v Melbourne @ MCG.
Franklin in the news again for all the wrong reasons. There was concern he would not play after a recent accident and then he limped off with a sore knee in the 3rd quarter, replaced by star Adam Goodes who started as sub.
The game was pretty mediocre as the Dees went super defensive. 4.8 to 2.3 at half time and the crowd were lucky to still be awake.
Things opened up a little more in the 2nd half but a further 5.7 to 3.5 still wasn't much to cheer about. The swans took the four point. Lance's knee wasn't as bad as thought, Goodes made a successful return for the season and Hannebery is starting to find some form.
    Swans by 31 points.

2 Goals to Jack. Hannebery, Parker and Kennedy among the best for the swans.
LRT played his last senior game for the swans.

    Go Joey!!!!
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.
