bit of a concern how much our depth players are behind GWS depth players
is it possible that we dont have a correct perspective about our depth ?
ie we only won by 3 goals in Snrs and we got smashed in ressies ?
sometimes i feel that the more you watch of your own team the less perspective you have re your own team and total squad list depth !
"be tough, only when it gets tough"
Well ive never seen more exswans in the AFL than now.
Mummy, snieder, demspey, membray, everett, jesse white, malceski.....
Imagine the depth if we could have kept all them.
You are pretty correct - depth is having a few players with reasonable levels of AFL experience that can come in and fill roles as required. We had little of this running round with our reserves today (apart from no. 37 of course). Mitchell is probably the only one who could slot into the team easily - other than that we have some promising youngsters but not a great amount of real depth.
I think we have pretty reasonable depth under the circumstances. As goswannies said, GWS have extraordinary depth which is especially telling at the lower level - you could add Jed Lamb to barry's list, for instance.
On top of that it seems to me that their senior team has made better progress than Gold Coast, probably because (a) they do not rely so much on any one player, (b) they got rid of their Rugby League import sooner, and (c) their seasoned imports are contributing more e.g. Mummy, Phil Davis and Ryan Griffen. In Griffen they have a big-bodied mid near the calibre of Josh Kennedy and Jobe Watson and he is having a major impact in what is already an impressive midfield.
In addition I think they are better coached, and Leon Cameron brings a touch of Hawthorn as seen in their generally good disposal by foot and their capacity to play an open, flowing game or a tight game as required. As a result I expect that, barring injuries, they will make the eight this season. They will trouble other teams this season, and it is no disgrace to finish three goals clear of them.
Finally, although it is not as important as the other factors, both our ressies and seniors were missing important defenders: for the ressies Aliir was rated BOG for us last week, while if you replaced Harry C with Nick Smith our seniors' margin might well have been bigger.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
