Round 4: Sydney University v Sydney Swans Reserves

    NEAFL 2015 Round 4

Sydney University v Sydney Swans Reserves

    Saturday 2nd May 2015
    5.10pm
    Sydney Cricket Ground

Note: Match being streamed live by the NEAFL North East Australian Football League: Live streaming links: Round 4

This match was originally a curtain raiser to the Swans Bulldogs AFL match but has been switched to a curtain closer due to worries about the rain.

The Reserves dished up a few thrashings against Sydney Uni in the first few years of the NEAFL but in recent years the margin has shrunk considerably with last year's meeting between the two sides going the way of the Swans by only 20 points.

There were high hopes for Sydney University going into this NEAFL season, after just missing out on the finals last year. Their squad has been signficantly boosted by some shrewd recruiting that yielded two former AFL players in Tom Young (Collingwood and Western Bulldogs) and Lewis Stevenson (West Coast and Port Adelaide), two of Aspley's winning premiership side in talls Jed Turner and Austin Lucy as well as 2 signings each from the WAFL (Sam Fong and Jordan Law) and the SANFL (Aaron Day and Scott Blesing)

However they've endured a winless start to the season losing to Redland by 7 points and last week succumbed to reigning premiers Aspley in the dying seconds to lose by only 3 points. They will go into this clash with some confidence though, having defeated a rusty Reserves side just a few weeks ago in a pre-season practice match.

The Reserves bounced back from their Round 2 shellacking by the Giants to post a comfortable 11 goal win over the hapless Gold Coast Suns Reserves.

Nic Newman is the big inclusion, making his Swans competitive debut after recovering from a knee injury. The left footed defender, who was awarded the VFL's best young player award last year, will most likely have his game time managed.

Hiscox, McGlynn and Cunningham will all likely spend time in the midfield to make up for the absence of Mitchell and Goodes who wree responsible for 14 clearances between them against the Suns.

There will be 2 sets of brothers playing against each other, with Swans ruckman Tom Derickx against his younger brother Jacob, and Swans Academy player Andrew Sierakowski against his older brother Will. Besides the brotherly familiarity out there, there are a few other players that the Swans would be familiar with. O'Dwyer is the most famous of the lot, Mitch Thompson was an Academy player a few years ago and in more recent times, Osbourne and Young have played as top ups.

Rawlinson, Sierakowski, Young, Fong and O'Dwyer are their biggest possession winners while up forward Tim Barrett leads their goal kicking with 4 just ahead of Derickx with 3 (and an inaccurate 7 behinds)

At least one, if not both, of the Krochmal boys have played as top-ups for the reserves team in years gone by. And Stephen Wray, on the emergency bench, is another fairly high profile ex-Academy player.

Is the Nick Winmar the same player who spent a couple of years on St Kilda's list (and also a cousin or nephew or something of the great Nicky Winmar)?

So GCS are actually 0-7 overall.
No looking like a good year for them.

I plan on sticking around to see some of this game - should be a decent contest. Will be good to have a look a Newman amongst others.

Will be good to see MO'D running around again too. I always liked him and hoped he'd make more of a career in the AFL...

Yes, it is interesting just how bad the Suns reserves have been. It tends to give lie to all the predictions from a few years back, that since the Suns were amassing so much young talent, a premiership would be bound to come within a decade. Now it seems, that while they have got plenty of young top-end talent, who are only going to get better, the likelihood is that they won't have the depth to really succeed.

Pardon my ignorance, but is there only one non-affiliated Sydney team in the NEAFL?
The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.

Yes the Sydney Hills Eagles dropped out along with Queanbeyan and Belconnen.

Some of the heavyweights in Melbourne are so focussed on sticking it to the Swans at every opportunity that they really have dropped the ball on footy in Qld.
