Round 21: Aspley Hornets v Sydney Swans Reserves @ Graham Road

    NEAFL 2015 Round 21

Aspley Hornets v Sydney Swans Reserves

    Saturday 29th August 2015
    12.00pm
    Graham Road

Trust the NEAFL schedule boffins to wait until the final round of the season to arrange the much anticipated Grand Final rematch between the Hornets and the Swans. After trailing by 31 points heading into the last quarter, the Hornets secured the 2014 NEAFL title with an amazing 50m kick after the siren by David Smith, a goal worthy of winning any Grand Final. Despite losing key players going into this season but the Hornets have done just as well - they will finish with the same 13-5 record as last year if they beat the Swans tomorrow.

The Swans have a very slight chance of finishing 3rd but that would require winning by a very large margin tomorrow (approx. 100 points). It is more likely the Swans will end up 4th or 5th and travel for the first week of the finals, either again to Aspley or across town to face Sydney Uni. Playing Uni would be preferable from a travel standpoint as it would probably be held at Blacktown, rather than making a second Queensland trip in the space of a week. For this situation to eventuate, one of two outcomes need to occur:
    1. lose to Aspley; or
    2. beat Aspley and hope UWS beat Uni

Now given that UWS have only dropped one game the whole year, the chances of Uni winning seem slim. However, the Giants have been hit by injuries in recent weeks and the team named to face Uni is one of the weakest lineups of the year in terms of number of listed players, so I wouldn't discount Uni pulling of an upset.

The Swans meanwhile are boosted by a number of returns and will field a much stronger side than the one that lost to the Giants by 80 points last week.

The precocious Rose unluckily gets squeezed from the senior side by some big names returning. McGlynn makes yet another (4th) return in the reserves as a last push for senior selection, and it will be interesting to see how many minutes he gets. Bird and Melican were also on restricted time last week against UWS. Marsh and Richards return to bolster the undersized backline.

    Players to watch:
    • Matt Payne - last year's NEAFL B&F winner's numbers are slightly down this year compared to last year's, but is still having a stellar season leading the NEAFL MVP count when public counts stopped a few rounds ago. Jordan Foote has been doing some run with roles for us and could be asked to clamp down on Payne.
    • Eddie Sansbury - Leading Hornets goalkicker and 4th overall in the NEAFL, the former North Melbourne player is often given plenty of space to outwit his man one on one. Harry Marsh seems his most likely opponent.
    • Gavin Grose - Reliable and experienced fullback who has been named BOG in 4 of his 16 games this year.
    • Cheynee Stiller - Ex-Lion has been named at halfback but often plays through the midfield and can contribute on the scoreboard.

Thanks for the great preview as ever, Ugg. Looks like our team will be dramatically stronger this week so here's hoping we win and never mind the possible travel consequences.

A question for you: do you think Marsh's relatively good form this year will be enough to save him from being delisted given he still hasn't been given a chance at senior level?

The Swans players and coaches always talk about playing your role when you get a chance at senior level, so we should rephrase the question to what kind of role could Marsh fill in the senior team.

Whilst he has played as a key defender in the reservesin some matches, I sincerely do not think he would be able to replicate this role in the seniors. So he would have to become either a 3rd/medium defender in the mould of Malceski, Mattner or Laidler or a small defender (Smith) or running halfback (Shaw). Despite his pace I don't think he provides enough run to become Shaw's successor and his forays as a small defender have had mixed results. Where he has really excelled this year is as that 3rd defender who knows when to peel off his man to help his key defenders.

Hence I think being a medium defender is his best chance but will he ever get an opportunity ahead of the current setup, and possibly have Newman to contend with for that spot in the coming years. Also don't forget the list management side of things and with most of our draft picks possibly tied up with Mills and Dunkley, they may prefer having Marsh on the list as a ready-made depth (physically speaking) than an 18 year straight out of the Under 18 system.

Looking forward to watching the replay of the stream as I'm on night shift this weekend! Hope Mills gets at least half a game.

I hope ugg has a long term contract here.

If any other side snagged him for their info, it would be tragic for us in RWO.

I always fear the Swans stealing him from us, and restricting his info from us.

    Great job ugg....as always

Interested to see how no 60 Harry Carr goes, has played mostly 19's with a few senior games of late with the North Shote Bombers (local junior).
Tall rangy lad with a good kick.

Sydney uni leading UWS at the moment. If this continues we will have to beat Aspley to avoid traveling to Qld next week

Nine straight goals to Uni. The way they are playing we will want to avoid them next week in a sudden death final

Disposal by hand and foot needs work, including kicking for goal; we've been very wasteful. Overall, Aspley is doing better in that department. They're a pretty niggly side, aren't they?
Great intercept mark from Aliir, saved an almost certain goal.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
