    Trade period review

Probably deserves its own thread given the length of the other one!

I believe we've done okay, given the circumstances.

     Needed a ruckman - Sinclair
     Needed a KPD - Talia
Needed extra draft points for Mills, Dunkley. Done
Needed to free up salary, traded Bird to Essendon.

Heading into 2016 our list is going to be very young, but overall I believe it's much more balanced than this year.

Our midfield is still elite, we've added another gun in Mills, our ruck stocks are better (and more versatile). Our backline is deeper and more flexible. Our forward line will have Buddy with a point to prove, an in form Tippett and a confident Reid.

Plenty of reasons to be optimistic about next season....bring it on!

    I agree with the above....

We seem to of done well under the constraints of trade restrictions and salary cap... Assuming we get Mills and Dunkley without gouging into 2016 draft points.

I'm also optimistic, that with a little bit of injury luck, we'll contend for the flag next year.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

Our trading doesn't look sexy because we didn't trade in and out fifty five different picks, or raid another club of its wanted youngsters. Well, maybe Sinclair but West Coast got a better player in return (and one they seem to want). But I think the club achieved it's goal of getting some cover in the two weakest areas of the squad, not stars maybe but decent players (hopefully). It traded out some salary cap space to accommodate this, and slightly improved its picks with a clear focus on drafting Mills. We probably won't be looking to draft more than the minimum we have to, with five players out (Goodes, Shaw, Jetta, Pyke, Bird) and three already in (Naismith, Sinclair, Talia). Indeed, with no players yet delisted and AJ confirmed on the senior list for next year, we only currently have two spots. So we might just draft two players.

Assuming Buddy makes a good recovery, we already have one of the better forward lines in the competition, at least in terms of personnel if not yet in terms of system and effectiveness. Hopefully Rose can have a good pre-season and really fight for a spot next year.

The depth and quality of our midfield (and spread of ages) I believe is second to none. Jetta's role will be hard to fill, and overall we have lost pace with Shaw and Goodes also departing. We will need Cunningham to step things up further from what was a pretty reasonable second half of the year (albeit a mediocre first half).

Defence and ruck are just middle of the road. Unless you have a star ruck, I think middle of the road is OK for the ruck. The key to our fortunes in 2016 I think rests in how well the defence holds up and can start to show real regeneration. Grundy, Smith and Rampe are solid defensively. Laidler too, though if we are to improve as a team we may need to hope he gets squeezed out and become more of a depth player. Finding some decent rebound from defence looms as a big challenge and one without an obvious solution. Jones looks like he can play a role but he's not the ultra quick runner or precise distributor that other teams can boast in this department.

We started the year with just 38 senior players, as you say we're down 5 and up 3 with the Naismith upgrade counting as one of our three draft selections. I strongly doubt we'll draft anyone other than Mills or Dunkley to the senior list and so will just stay at 38 with a few rookies in the mix.

Aside from the AFL investigation the Talia trade is a good one if he has a good preseason and NAB cup he could be playing round one.

Don't like Terry Wallace but he raised a good point when said we have the most kids who haven't played at AFL level yet, there comes a point when we have to play Hewett, Newman, X, Jones will probably start next year with Shaw retiring. Otherwise its going to be like 2014 when we lost Biggs and Membrey

I liked Liz' use of the word regeneration in her post, because I think that best describes where we are at right now. I feel we have a lot of unproven talent on our list that folks like Terry Wallace don't know about. Hewett and Newman both look to be AFL ready, but we won't know until they are actually tried. I don't think we planned on taking Hewett at pick 32 in the draft 2 years ago, but he was a talent too good to pass up and I am looking forward to seeing him in the senior side next year.

Another good point in Liz' post is the hope that Laidler becomes a depth player, not because he's a bad player, but rather more a reflection of our need for a general elevation in our defence as a whole.

Something we lost in the past couple of years is footy smarts, particularly with Malceski, Goodes and Shaw. They all had the ability to take the game on in a split second. It's something that usually doesn't come quickly, and sometimes never. There's a lot to like about the footy instincts of some of our young players like Heeney, Mills, Hewett, Rose and Perris. Although not overly talented, I think Sinclair is a clever player for his experience which is one of the things I like about him. If AJ can make get over his knee problems we'll be sitting pretty.

I don't have the kind of expectations going into next season that I did going into the one just past. But I do see a lot of reason for optimism. Just hoping that our players can stay injury free and reach their potential.

Mexican could be a dark horse like AJ was a few years back

bash and crash all over you 194cm defender that can play on talls and smalls
"be tough, only when it gets tough"

    Melican.

We got handy pick ups but losing jetta and our retirements we didn't get any big wins in trade period. As Wallace says we got the most who haven't debuted so we got to back out young talent at some stage and I hope to see that in 2016. Probably one of the reasons as to why we weren't overly active this trade period.

I would have thought that there;s a good chance we will draft one additional player as our current pick 69 could well be unused by the points system and be upgraded into the low 50s by the time we get there

We operate below the minimum list number anyway so maybe we have the option, with Pyke's and Bird's salary room, to keep an extra player on the list at minimum wage.

I would actually like it if we didn't de-list anyone this year and would be interested on how it affects our NEAFL list, I expect GWS to be quite a bit weaker in the NEAFL next year with their clear out

Yep, agree with the summary. Clearly Buddy being back and firing is a big one and there's no reason why he shouldn't be...

we can only bring the 5 picks with points if we have 5 spaces on the main list. We have a net 2 plus 2 spaces we didn't utilise this year so I believe we have to delist one player from the senior list.

I thought we were two below the maximum senior list so if we lose five (Goodes, Shaw, Pyke, Jetta, Bird) and gain five (Sinclair, Talia, Naismith, Mills and Dunkley) can't we just bring in an extra draftee as go to a 39 man senior list? Salary cap permitting of course....
