Apart from a bad day in the 2014 GF, Reg has been the best defender for the past couple of years.

OK, he's not the most agile, he's certainly awkward, he gives away free kicks and generally he's not a great kick, so what makes him the best?

He's quicker than he looks, he reads the ball brilliantly in the air and rarely gets gets beaten in one out contested marking (except by Roughhead), he's strong, determined and resilient, he is quick to recognise an attacking situation and is terrific at creating a loose man even if he is sometimes guilty of missing targets on the way out.

There would be an genuine argument these days that Smith is more important based on the small forwards running around being more dangerous than the talls and considering players like Rioli, Betts, Harvey, Ballantyne, et al, this is a reasonable point of view.

I believe that tall marking forwards like Hawkins, Roughead, Hogan, Cloke, etc pose a greater threat because they are targets that can win the ball in the air in contested situations (not that Rioli can't) and the attacking team will kick to them under pressure because of their ability to win possession and/or bring the ball to ground with advantage.

I think that is the Reg of a couple of years ago. Looking across our back line, he is definitely not the worst kick, I think it is just in general that our defenders (not "rebounding defenders") often have to kick under more pressure than the rest of the team.

Just on kicking, wtf has happened to Smooch's foot skills in the past year or two? He missed a bloke coming off the bench in a mile of space the other night by 20 metres.

Still a mighty fine lockdown defender, but his kicking has deteriorated markedly. He seems to have gone downhill since that abomination of a set shot which seemed to swing the momentum 180% in the Richmond game last year. Just weird.
Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09

Always been a pretty ordinary kick I reckon but yes, he's certainly got worse.

He was told he had to keep his skills up with the rest of the team or he is out.

That is true.....a tiny little article that was easy to miss. It's a reflection of the Hun's deplorable attitude towards our club. No write up of the Swans-Collingwood game at all on the Monday, just stats( it didn't make Sundays edition as it was late the night before). Oh, but lots on the poor Magpies, the drug testing leak, Swan's injury, Buckley's ire at the drug testing leak, Sidebottom's suspension etc etc etc! That 'news'paper is a Melbourne based joke! They even had 'Robbo' harping on about what he liked and didn't like from the first round, and he liked the Bulldogs, saying 'what they did to Fremantle was more impressive than what the Swans did to Collingwood'......which it may have been, but that was the only mention of the Swans in his entire 'full page' article. It's blatantly pathetic. Ditto the Seven commentators and Buckley himself( post match press conference). Funny that Eddie has been so quiet this week, although there's still a few days left!!

The Herald Sun is a melbourne based paper, and should have very little interest in teams from outside Melbourne.
If you want to read about the swans, buy the telegraph or herald.

Now that Talia is out for 8-12 weeks, can he be put on the LTI list and can we upgrade another Rookie or is there a limit?

An important part of the Swans' supporter base is in Melbourne, including the original South fans. For that matter Swans supporters are spread liberally nationwide. They are even more numerous than Pies fans, Pridham reminded us the other day.
