Round 9: Sydney University v Sydney Swans Reserves @ SCG

    NEAFL 2016 Round 9

Sydney University v Sydney Swans Reserves

    Friday 26th May 2016
    4.10pm
    Sydney Cricket Ground

Reserves football finally makes a SCG appearance in 2016! North Melbourne won't be the only side playing on Friday with an unbeaten record, as the Swans Reserves will be aiming to make it a perfect 8 from 8 when they play the impressive Sydney University in a highly anticipated NEAFL clash starting 4.10pm. The Swans will be fresh, fit and firing after a rest with the bye but will face a talented Uni side who have performed strongly in the NEAFL in recent seasons

Uni have recruited strongly over the past 3 seasons and are now rightly regarded as one of the stronger clubs in the NEAFL. Their squad consists of a number of former AFL listed players complemented by a cornucopia of young Sydney-based talent, many of whom are past Swans Academy members and have played for our Reserves as topups. They look to be in line for another finals appearance after their 3rd place finish in 2015 earned them a first ever NEAFL finals spot.

The Swans have been in terrific form at both ends of the ground averaging 134 points for and 49 points against to sit unopposed at the top of the ladder. However this game marks the start of a tough 5 game stretch when they will also play the other Top 4 sides in Aspley and the Thunder as well as the Suns Reserves. Uni thrashed us by 65 points in the corresponding clash last year and will be take that result into this year's clash knowing they have the ability to topple us on the SCG. It must be noted thought that we had only 13 listed players going into last year's game game and lost Bird and Robinson through injury midway through the first half. However with a season high 19 listed players named for this game, the Swans will be hot favourites.

    Changes
In: Rose, Hiscox, Reid, Towers, Leonardis, Jack, Dawson
Out: Gary ROHAN (seniors), Harrison MARSH (seniors)

As mentioned a season high 19 listed players which gives Shaw a lot of options all over the ground. It will be interesting to see where Reid lines up - as a forward where Longmire has earmarked his long term future, or as a defender where he may be required by the seniors in the short term, or perhaps even maybe the midfield just to get him into the game. If he plays forward he will have to share the space with fellow talls Nankervis, Derickx, Naismith and Galloway.

5 players to look out for:

    • Tom Young, the reigning NEAFL MVP is in such good form he could claim another NEAFL MVP award with his form. Playing mainly in the midfield but can also slot in at halfback.
    • Matt Rawlinson is their leading clearance winner and best tackler.
    • Lewis Stevenson is their most creative player and a lot of their forward entries go through him.
    • Michael Manteit, former Collingwood rookie, playing as a small forward is a hot favourite for the NEAFL Rising Star award. Currently averaging 2.0 goals a game and the Swans will be familiar with his capabilities having played him as a topup a few weeks ago.
    • Jacob Derickx, strong marking and commading CHF and their leading goalkicker. Will provide a stern test for whichever tall defender lines up on him.

I hope the two sides are playing for the Derickzkx-Derickzkx Cup.

I presume the Nick Winmar is the ex-St Kilda player (nephew or cousin or something of his more illustrious namesake?) And is that the same Lewis Stevenson who was on West Coast's list for a while?

And it's a beautiful trophy their playing for. One I'd be proud to have on my mantelpiece.

Just a little bit disappointed, that there's not a small pile of manure on the plinth.

The returns of Jack and Leonardis are as mysterious as their withdrawals. It still suggests it was disciplinary to me. Great to see Dawson back too, although we don't know what happened to him either do we?
